Well in my OP I asked for the signs of a winner earlier on i.e. auditions/judges houses but I see where you are coming from. I think the best time (bar obviously the final two weeks) to get a clear idea of who will win is in the first two weeks. You can really see who is being overhyped (those contestants won't win), who is being sabotaged (those contestants won't win) and who is not getting great slots but are getting really positive judges comments (they'll most
probably win).

I think when we're trying to identify the winner early on, it is best to use the process of elimination. Take out the clear cannon fodder (next to zero screen-time before live shows - Sophie/James), the overhyped (Janet), the novelty acts (Johnny), the tabloid fodder (Kitty, Frankie) and the niche acts (Janet and Misha). Then exclude who the producers would least like to win (Craig) and then see who is left.[/QUOTE]

1. boring
2. less threatening than a hamster
3. portrayed as an angel or a martyr
4. the Louis Walsh seal of approval: "I think you will go on to sell records and be the next big international superstar!"

To the OP I agree with what another poster has posted about seeing what happens in the first few rounds, and you get some idea, you can take out as he/she says the joke acts, the fill the show acts, the one pimped too much etc.

However I do not think Matt was the intended winner last year but he ran away with it from week one and they could do nothing about it, as is shown by the voting figures.”

The reason for there being no voting figures for series 3 is because ITV shows (such as XF, Dancing On Ice) which had public votes were forced to release the statistics after each series had finished due to some ITV show (Soapstar Superstar?) fixing the voting. Therefore, it's been a rule ever since 2008 to release the voting figures hence why there are none from 2004-2007.

I agree with your point regarding Matt. I think the same happened to Janet (both their initial popularity was built due to their pre-live show exposure) but they managed to kill her chances early on. I think Matt was the "chosen one" at bootcamp but One Direction became the pimped act after judges houses.

We could technically include The Risk and Amelia too but the former's chances were ruined by the line-up change and the latter's chances were ruined by the twist.

I think likeability is a huge factor, they have to appear down-to-Earth, relatively normal and someone the voters would like to know in real life. For example, Kitty had no chance of winning as she was too 'out there' and over-confident so viewers turned against her early.
