I have recently bought a new Panasonic widescreen tv and as a result, had to refit all the leads for into my Yamaha AV Amplifier.

I had some problems with the speakers and in trying to sort this out, I have switched the impedance switch into a different position whilst the power was on.

Now, when playing a dvd, my amp cuts out and goes to standby when there is any slight increase in volume on the soundtrack. The manual says I should check the impedance switch is fully on. It is, and I have tried it in both positions. However, in the 4ohm position, the unit switches off immediately. In the 8ohm position, it cuts out on the increase in volume.

Have I damaged the impedance switch and is this the cause of the current problem? If so, is it easily fixable?

Do you get the same problem with all sources (TV, DVD, Tuner, etc)?
If you do, it could be a problem with the speaker connections, maybe a partial short circuit. Try disconnecting the speaker leads from the amp, and increasing the volume.

If it still cuts out, try disconnecting the inputs to the amp one at a time.

There are really only two possibilities:

You've blown up the amp
You've plugged something in wrongly/badly

The second is the most likely on a modern amp. The protection circuits usually prevent damage. They shut the power off if there is a problem, which is most likely what is happening here.

Cheers
