Try out Angie Stones "Stone Love" album, and Jill Scotts latest album isn't half bad either.

Raphael Saadiq and Rahsaan Patterson have both brought quality soul albums recently.

I bought Jill Scotts latest album and didn't really like it at all. I think that her first album was her best and her second was ok although nothing really special. She has just gone down hill in my opinion and i don't think that i will be forking out to buy her album again.
India Aries and Eryka Badus consecutive albums are also disappointments in my opinion.
I didn't like Raphael Saadiq work at all but I have just discovered Bilal and i will forgive him for his gang rap style in a song or two but overall his album "First Born Second" is excellent.
Musiq Soulchild,Amerie, Amel Larrieaux and Terri Walker are worth checking out if you have not heard of any of these artists before.
Maybe you could browse amazon or hmv and try and discover new artists. That is what i have done in the past and have discoverd many artists who i have never even heard of before.

edited to add:
Brandy -Afrodisac is also a pretty good album to get.

Jill Scott is an aquired taste, Saadiq latest "As Ray Ray" album is quality, and any album by D'angleo or Jahiem is guaranteed to satisfy.

Personal taste yes of course, you have got me listening to it again now, this will be my second time now, maybe it will grow on me......not sure but you never know.

I would agree with the recommendation given for Angie Stone, she is great really. Angie Stones "Mahagony Soul" and "Stone Love" are definte must buys for any soul fan.

brooksider, you may want to keep an eye out for Fantasia Burrnio.
She doesn't have her own album out yet but she should do soon. If you do like Arthea then you probably will like her.
brooksider maybe you will let us know what you decide to get and what you thought of your albums when you do get them, good luck.

You of course have Joss Stone... but shes like Soul Lite... Good voice mind you...

Personally, you won't find many better than Marlena Shaw... oh and before anyone says anything, I was listening to her long before KFC's "Soul Food" adverts thank you very much :P

Sade adu's old stuff is quite good. It's a mix of Jazz and soul.

Someone who I think is underrated is Anthony Hamilton. Anyone remotely interested in Soul music, and especially people who think Soul music isn't what it used to be, should have a listen to his album 'Coming From Where I'm From'. He has an old school sound and a wonderful voice reminiscent of those great singers from the sixties and seventies.

You can listen to song samples from his album on this Amazon page.

Joss Stone, Cecilia Mornhed :P
