Ballroom on TV

I know this isn't strictly Strictly, but can anyone tell me if Ballroom & Latin Championships are on any of the Sky channels? I know they used to be on Eurosport. I am tempted to get Sky again if I can see dance.

Sometimes on Eurosport, for one-day world championship only, but lighting, sound and camerawork is often disappointing. Blackpool Festival, never transmitted on TV, is the acknowledged champion thoroughbred of world dance. Here is the sparkling Final quickstep which brought the house down in Festival 2009:

with Jonathan Wilkiins and Hazel Newberry (in a white ballgown with V back, in her competitive swangsong 17 years after winning Blackpool 16-20),

with the future champions Arunas Bizokas and Katusha Demidova (bejewelled pink bareback),

and with the past champions Mirko Gozzoli and Alessia Betti (in turquoise, powering like a Lamborghini past the field.)

With regards to the recent competition in Bonn, it was the European Championship held on 19/11/2011. This was the first European Championship to uphold the new WDC rule of including a basic dance in each round.

There is a video on YouTube which can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LmekleK2W8 - unfortunately it's not the full competition, just highlights from each heat plus interviews from the top three at the end. I was there, and you can see me on the video in a couple of places, but I'm not going to say where !

Amy?

Andrej and Melinda are looking good. It's nice to see that they're rising to the challenge of being world finalists. They're really growing on me.

Many thanks Becca. A good VT, I like the sound better. Lighting good though not as atmospheric as the Empress Ballroom. This being European Championship for 35 couples the Americans Riccardo and Yulia were ineligible to enter.

Once again England is on top of the dance world thanks to Michael and Joanna and the union jack was raised high at the prizegiving.

European Professional Latin 2011 Bonn:

1. Michal Malitowski / Joanna Leunis (England)
2. Sergey Sourkov / Agnieszka Melnicka (Russia)
3. Andrej Skufca / Melinda Torokgyorgy (Slovenia)
4. Justinas Duknauskas / Anna Melnikova-Duknauske (Lithuania)
5. Markus Homm / Ksenia Kasper (Germany)
6. Emanuele Soldi / Elisa Nasato (Italy)

Many happy returns to * Becca * who saw in her 22nd birthday -- a festive occasion apparently celebrated every year by the dance world throwing a championship party.
The birthday girl could not be upstaged even by Melinda in the foreground.

Thanks everyone for all the info and the links

It's such a travesty that hardly anything is broadcast. Surprisingly so, given the surge in popularity of ballroom over the last few years. Then again, it's all about money...if the broadcasters can't get the revenue, they won't bother. Simple as.

You're welcome. I would imagine the Kremlin Cup and World Masters will make their way on to EuroSport towards the end of this month as usual, so keep an eye out for that!
