Why does a cat have to stand up?

Whenever I stroke my two female cats that are lying down, they always appear to have a reaction that makes them stand up whenever I stroke their backs and reach the end near their tails. I only have two female cats at this time and neither are in heat.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Why does this happen (something connected to the mating process??)

Does this only happen with female cats (I can't remember if any previous males that I have had in the past did it.)

My cat does it too.....whereas the dog rolls over and lies down when we stroke her.

Most cats seem to do it.. I have had a couple that will stay laying when you stroke them but its not the norm and they also arch their backs right up too. Strange buggers
