The fact that you need to use a song from 20 years ago to be in with a chance of having a number one says more about the music in the charts today than an X Factor song getting to number one does. Why don't you just accept that the music in the charts today is rubbish and do something more constructive with your time.

How about a musically superior Nirvanna song rather than the one we've all been sick of hearing non stop the last 20 years?

Don't get why it's always some random song. Why not try get a proper Christmas classic as number 1

Agreed. Whose with me that next year we should do a proper campaign to get something like 'Saviour's Day' or 'In Dulce Jubilo' to Christmas No.1? Or even, dare I say, the over-played (and slightly over-rated) 'Fairytale Of New York', just to shut up all the whingers who complain how it only made No.2 on its original release?

'Smells Like Teen Spirit' as Xmas No.1? It might make me feel a little festive if I was living under a bridge somewhere. As it happens, it just brings back memories of secondary school and supposed "cool kids" growing their hair all long and getting loads of zits from said greasy fringe hanging down their faux-angsty faces.

It's not a random song though.

Since the RATM campaign actually worked, people have realised that future campaigns have to be based around a song that is likely to get support from people who wouldn't usually bother buying singles at all and aren't bothered about the charts, but might just support a campaign because the idea of getting a completely inappropriate alternative/rock rock song to Xmas no 1 is vaguely amusing.

For this to work it has to be an alternative/rock song that is already very well known and has a big underground following.

The choice of song is crucial to whether a campaign like this might succeed. it's not "random" at all.

As highlighted above, the trouble with these campaigns is that you end up with a contrived number one either way, be it X-Factor or whoever you're campaigning for, so in a sense it's self-defeating.

Wouldn't it be lovely if the Xmas number one came about organically, through merit, word getting around what a good song it is, etc (not necessarily a Xmas related song either, just an original composition). Suppose I shouldn't be so naive.....

These campaigns are just as fake as any X-factor single. If you like the song, then you should already have it, or buy it now, rather than make any stupid 'statement' about anything.

Nirvana has no chance. If anything beats XF's second week now it'll be the Military Wives.

I couldn't give a toss what song gets the number one as long as it's not the expected X factor trash we've had to endure the last few years.

Maybe, but I think more people will just "like" the FB page rather than buy the song, seen as if people hear the song all over they most likely won't want to buy it. Doubt it will get as attention as the RATM one. But even if it does, I'll probably start getting annoyed at alternative/rock whatever songs that have nothing to do with xmas getting #1 every year just as much as the X factor ones

You know what's sad there no bands around like Nirvana today.

But I don't think Smell Like Teen Spirit should be number 1 because it disrespect to Kurt and Grunge by now making it the only,Nirvana song and now a Christmas number 1 joke. For Facebook geeks in there basement, Kurt must be rolling in his grave.

This is getting just as bad as the X Factor. Last year it was "It's really annoying that X Factor always gets the Christmas No.1", next year it will be "It's really annoying that the Facebook campaign always gets the Christmas No.1".

It'll be like a never ending cycle when something else will come along that the sheep will follow in a few years time, then another years after that.

Not released until 19th it's the No.2 music item on Amazon. Only albums are usually in the Top 10. Bookies think it has a great chance.
