Im thinking of getting another rescue dog from the RSPCA. Ive had one before and she was a brilliant little dog, cost us a small fortune at the vets but worth every penny. Had to have her put to sleep a couple of years ago. Does anyone know how much they charge??

Not sure about the RSPCA but we got our dog from the Dogs Trust 4 years ago and her adoption fee was £75. I would imagine it would be around that amount.

Wow thats dear. I know when we got our other dog they had 2 prices one for pedigrees and one for mongrels. Think we paid £68 cos she was a mongrel. Best little dog in the world she was.

PLEASE don't give a penny to the RSPCA, adopt from a local shelter or Dog's Trust. I would imagine as in above posts it would be around the £70 mark

You could also try http://www.dogpages.org.uk/ - they have a forum where rescues from all over the country post dogs for rehoming. Or http://www.dogsblog.com/ - where you can sort by dog breed, age etc.

RSPCA won't get a penny from me ever again. They refused to come and save 2 dogs I've found ran over in the last few years. They just wanted me to let them bleed and die in the street.

Try Lurcher Link. Fabulous organisation that deals mainly with sighthounds, but others crop up from time to time. There's a gorgeous wee B&W terrier there just now.

I've had similar experiences and would never donate to, or recommend anyone else to donate to, the RSPCA.

That was when I was a teenager and I now know that all they would do if they did bother was collect the dogs and have them put to sleep.

Its cheaper than buying a puppy though, our new pup cost £300 and that was cheap!

Getting a dog should never be about the cheapest option.

As already has been said Dogpages is an excellent resource for dogs (and other animals) in rescues throughout the country.

I second Lurcher Link. Will also suggest Greyhound Gap (they don't just have greyhounds). We got a grey from them. Really good rescue

Another one here who refuses to support the SSPCA.

^^ And me.

The only time I ever called them - when a dog had been quite literally abandoned by its owners in an empty house down my road - they said they were only dealing with emergencies and that didn't constitute an emergency. I'd like to know what does!! I will never support them again.

Try going down to your local dog pound. You may be able to save a dog's life.

Had a similar experience a long time ago. There was a puppy in a back garden. He was unerweight and all on his own. The garden was a bit of a mess too, My sister called the RSPCA concerned for it but their reply was to knock at the operson door ourselves and ask.

i also refused to support the rspca after media stories but i've recently changed my mind because in the main it's only the rspca who prosecute animal cruelty cases and i know in my local court there's been a few cases lately they've won and prosecuting these cases doesnt come cheap.

i'm not sure it matters where you get a rescue pet from because why should dogs/cats at rspca be denied a good home just because of bad media publicity - if you're an animal lover it shouldnt matter where you get it from and at the end of the day the rspca are obviously rescuing dogs/cats if they have them in their kennels to rehome.

They dont actually in general the RSPCA will only accept gifted dogs not strays or take in any pound cases, they also destroy more dogs and cats than they will ever help as an agency, they also get funding for their cruelty cases they are not solely reliant on donations like a lot of other rescues

I think it's actually pathetic people going "don't go there, go here.." why should an animal be denied the chance of a home because of people not liking them.

Plus, I can't fault the RSPCA, the ones in my local area are brilliant

Add up how much chipping, vaccinating, treating agaisnt fleas and worms and neutering will cost you at your vets. Then see if you still think £100 to adopt a dog is expensive.

And I think it's pathetic to support a charity that's supposed to care about the welfare of animals.I was told,"Just leave it there".When I called them about a dog being ran over.It was dying slowly and bleeding out all over the road.Pints and pints of blood.Days later they announced a massive new multi million pound headquarters. It just turned my stomach.Thats why I'd never ever ring them or use one of their homing centres EVER again.Theres plenty of other shelters who don't destroy the animals they're there to protect.I couldn't care less if they closed down tomorrow and to be honest I doubt there'd be any difference in number of animals being rescued.

I wouldn't donate to the RSPCA because of all the bad stories I hear about them, here, in the press and from friends who've tried to contact them for support. However, I would have no problems adopting an animal from one of their shelters and almost did last year. Those animals need homes and some may have a time limit on how long they're kept for before being put to sleep. I definitely wouldn't discriminate against those poor animals though I admittedly went with Cats Protection in the end (but that was because CP allowed me to reserve cats until after my holiday whereas the RSPCA wanted me to take the cat immediately - which wasn't feasible)

The RSPCA hospital in Putney was also fantastic with my elderly uncle's cat when she was ill, charging him just £100 for 4-5 days stay and treatment.
