I have to disagree. In Corrie, they always write these one-off characters in this stupid, over the top, eccentric way and make them ludicrous caricatures. The tax inspector was the most recent, but there have been lots of examples. Even the man having the party last week was verging on it.
I loved him too. I thought there was definitely potential to see him again, although you'd have to be careful how you used him. There was a touch of Derek Wilton about him, somehow (who I still miss, oddly enough). You used to get hilarious scenes between Norris and 'Dirk' and while Norris bounces wonderfully off Rita and Emily, it isn't quite the same.

TOTALLY AGREE.
Sorry to shout but Corrie always have this type of one-off characters. These one-off characters are nealry always male, middle-age or older are just as IslandNiles has described.
Corrie also has/had some permanent male characters in the same ilk. It's a Corrie thing but they could try something different.
He was nothing original - the kind of thing Jonathan Harvey writes again and again and again and again....all the humour last night left me straight faced
I wouldn't be surprised if they were just testing the water with him, like they did with that gobby mare a few months back. I quite like the idea of having him around, inspecting everyone.
Actually perhaps that's the right balance. Not a permanent character, but something short-term, maybe a couple of months in a storyline with Mary and then go.
