Bitter spray / neck cones

Hi everyone,

Back from the vets with my middle cat who has developed flea allergy dermatitis

Her back is a real mess as is her belly and tail - almost completely bald and she's covered with scabs

We've treated the fleas, house is now flea-free but the vet has advised putting her in one of the plastic cones to stop her licking herself.. but she HATES them! She can get out of them, even the smallest one because she basically freaks out until she's free.. so this obviously won't work. I've used a bitter spray in the past to stop her cleaning, but the one I've got (Grannicks bitter apple) she's got used too and is hardly effective.

Does anyone have any alternative suggestions or ways to stop her licking? She's had an antibiotic and steroid shot but they won't heal if she doesn't stop licking

Thanks!
Tara

You could try putting a small t shirt on her, or even a bigger one just tied around her belly. Your vets could craft one out of bandaging material, it's like a stretchy fishnet stocking that you can cut holes in for legs. Or they do neck braces or soft doughnut collars for dogs, they prob do them for cats too.

Good luck

That's a great idea! Thank you for that! I'm holding off for the moment because she seems to have stopped licking! I'm assuming it must be the steroid or even the Zyklene (anxiety stuff) which also seems to be working a treat.

She's back to her affectionate self, I'm so relieved!

Thanks again,
Tara
