As some on here may know, footballer and current Wales manager Gary Speed died today.

Robbie Savage was on BBC News, and only just stopped himself from breaking down in tears.

RIP Gary, and God help Robbie

How awful. Carpe diem - seize the day and live life to the full everyone.

Do we know how Gary passed away?

Robbie spoke really movingly about someone he obviously loved and respected greatly.

I'm Welsh and I'm devastated, I obviously didn't know him, but he was really highly respected and loved in Wales for the wonderful job he was doing and for the man he was, a football man with immense dignity. His poor family.

My heart went out to Robbie, he was clearly devastated.

I remember seeing Gary in the Strictly audience a few weeks ago.

As a big lifelong Newcastle United fan, I'm devastated, and in shock at this tragic news, but Robbie's tweet made me shed a few tears.

Poor Robbie. I wouldn't blame him if he didn't feel like dancing now. Suddenly I'm glad sundays show is recorded saturday for Robbie's sake.

RIP Gary xx

As Robbie is still planning to do 606 this evening I imagine he will continue - but it should totally be his own decision and I wouldn't blame him either way.

I am not a fan of Robbie's dancing and I can't take back any criticism I've posted of him, but I have just watched the BBC clip and the poor guy is clearly devastated at the loss of his friend - he was so choked up he couldn't finish the interview. My heart really goes out to him, and obviously to Gary Speed's family too. It's very sad when someone dies at an early age, but suicide is one of the hardest deaths for those left behind to come to terms with. So many unanswered questions. His poor wife and children, and his parents and everyone else who loved him - it must be the darkest day of their lives. My prayers to all.

It is shocking news, I was watching Sky Sports when the news broke. His sporting pals have rung up in tears, everyone said how happy he was, what a great family he has...just goes to show, depression is a dark and lonely place.

I hope depression and suicide gets more awareness because of this tragic episode.

This post just says it all.
I saw some moving tweets this week from Stan Collymore about his own experiences and most recent bout of depression, ending with "you are not alone" and urging people to seek help.

To see Robbie just crumble at the end - I would imagine all who are paying tributes to this talented young manager feel exactly the same and I agree - anything that can raise awareness about depression can maybe be a small positive to come from this awful news.

Very sad indeed. I remember seeing him in the Strictly audience on ?Halloween week supporting Robbie. And he was on Football Focus yesterday, chatting away as usual.

It'll look very incongruous seeing Robbie looking his usual smiley and chirpy self on tonight's show, as most viewers do not realise the sunday show is pre-recorded. Then again some won't know who he is (was) or how close they were.

The papers state that he hanged himself. RIP Gary.

Anyone dying at such a young age with a family, and a sudden death at that, is a shock and tragic. But this will send shockwaves throughout everyone that knew him...and some of us that didn't know him. You think you know someone, you think you would know if they were feeling that bad....but depression can be covered up extremely well.

All we can is look around us and not get too busy that we forget to let the people we care about know that we are always there for them. And at the other end of the spectrum, if you are feeling really low, more than just a usual low mood and it's really effecting you, please see your GP, speak to a friend, a family member, there is a lot of help out there.

I don't often tweet celebrities, but I tweeted Robbie just now offering my condolences. I know what it's like to have someone I care about commit suicide, the pain & shock one feels when that happens is truly awful.

Yeah - I thought about that too... and I suspect he will be quite affected during the training for next week.

Tragedies like this put a lot of things into perspective.

Given that Gary Speed had phenomenal strength and self-discipline, hopefully no depressed person will ever again be told to get a grip

Really shocking news. So sad for Gary's family and friends - my heart goes out to them all. Robbie's tribute was very moving and my thoughts are with all those who knew Gary. Like others, I hope this will lead to a greater discussion and public awareness of depression and its devastating effect on people's lives.

Given how publicly and movingly Robbie has spoken about Gary today, I would hope that the BBC would make some reference to tonight's show being recorded - out of respect for both Robbie and Gary's family, given he seems a close personal friend.
