Just recently thinking about a cat we used to have when I was young. He was a scraggly thing but overall a good, loving cat. We had two cats then and although he slept with our other household cat, they didn't really play or anything else. The scraggly cat did however befriend a neighbour's cat and they hung out with each other all the time. They would sit on each other's doorsteps and wait for the other to be let out then wander off together. Both we and the neighbour did allow the other cat in and they would find each other in the houses and play and sleep together.

In my current flat I have two cats and with all the territorial building cats around, my cats do get pretty worked up when there is another one they can see or who comes too close. All but one cat, who they don't respond to at all, in fact, they just don't seem bothered by it's presence and will go near her, etc.

I guess it just made me think about that cat from my childhood as it's not very often I have seen cats not fighting or being territorial when they are from different households. Would be curious to know if any others have cats who befriend other cats in their neighbourhoods?

My Impossible Princess got mothered by the cat next door when she was a kitten. I think she got a bit more education on how to be a cat.

Hmmmm, interesting . . . both of the cats in the first story were male (and neutered) . . . that explains a lot

My cat gets on just fine with the cat next door. They sit and conspire together.

Rolo has a girlfriend come calling a Tortieshell. Missy ..as I call her, comes most mornings and late afternoon/early evenings, and they hang around in the garden and have a little natter together.I let her come in for a bit, generally she comes in to eat what Rolo hasn't eaten up during the day.

The other morning, they were out in the garden, and Missy was tantalising the dog next door, by prancing on the fence tail right up and Rolo was sitting in his garden looking up at her antics very adoringly!!!

Them becoming friends has really helped him settle in, as he was a very nervous puss.

My cats get on really well with other cats. Lucy was a bit unfriendly to strange cats when I first adopted her in June but she's now more accepting of them. My late Tabitha was also quite welcoming, on the whole, to visiting cats though some she took a dislike to and would chase them away. Millie flirts with all cats and Bernard knows most of the neighbourhood cats quite well and has no issues with them.

I quite like cats visiting my garden. In the summer they make use of my garden furniture and in the winter they can shelter under the weatherproof covers of my furniture when they're locked out of their own homes.

Our Tom was friends with the cat next door before they both died. They were so adorable, they'd hide from each other in the gardens and leap out and biff each other on the nose or chase butterflies, then pop inside either house for a snack then go for a snooze together. We're convinced they were boyfriends After Tipsy died Tom used to go and sit by where he was buried.

Sophie, who we've still got, is a right menace though. Any cat who comes anywhere near her garden is instantly targeted! We're a bit worried because she's getting on a bit (17 next year!) and has hyperthyroidism, so we're having to make sure she doesn't get into a full-blown scrap just in case. Lovely around people, but other cats are a no-no!

For the longest time I thought my cat hated other cats and would often come home having been in a fight. (His nemesis was his litter brother from across the road and another what I suspected was his daddy) Reduced the fights considerablly since he was neutered.

But I did start noticing little things. He would avoid female cats. He would hiss if they got too close but he usually gave them a wide berth. And then this little orange kitty who was just old enough to start going outside had a thing about following other cats. He would follow my cat and my cat would turn and hiss at him and be generally his miserable anti-social self.

Eventually though they even became friends. The kitty would come to visit my cat at home and they would chase each other around the place.
(For the record I never fed the strange cat and tried to discourage it from visiting often)
Sadly the owner of that cat moved and he lost his friend but my cat certainly seems less inclined to fight now.
