The film has had screening for critics and invited guests in NYC and LA. Apparently, that is not enough to qualify it for the Oscars.

i knew about the screenings, there`s been screening elsewhere in the world also. she`s even picked up a golden globe nomination. however, i doubt that the song would qualify for an oscar.
Not because the song hasn't been commercially released. A song doesn't have to be commercially available as a single or on an album as long as the movie itself is released and as I said the critics screenings count as the movie being released in 2011. |

Just had a listen on YouTube. Fairly pleasant and inoffensive, but nothing special. Certainly nothing to cream your pants over.

It's on the same level as This Used to be my Playground which was also in a movie. Lovely vocals but musically a little too simple. |

Simplicity is in the magic of the song...i love Masterpiece.
And The Oscars piss me off, what is with these stupid rules? I mean DAMN! Masterpiece is on the film...it should have a nomination! But hey! I love it so much

The reason the song doesn't qualify for an Oscar is because the Oscars have this rule the song has to be in the main body of the movie or the first music when the credits start. Apparently the song starts after some other music finishes in the credits.

the film isn't commercially available though. according to oscar rules the movie must open in the previous calendar year. screenings are not considered openings.

And what do you mean by that?
Madonna is my fave artist but i also love Masterpiece ![]() I'm a big Madonna fan, but I tend to love certain things she does more than others. I like Masterpiece but it's not at the top of my favourite Madonna songs. I love Madonna, but I'm just naturally a more critical person! |

I think he means because you're a very dedicated Madonna fan, who loves everything she does to the max, which I love about you.

I guess that's true. I"m not sure since I don't live in the US. I did read on a Madonna forum that some fans went to see it though so maybe anyone who lives in NYC or LA could just go and you didn't have to be a critic. Not sure.

i don't live in the us either, although i am quite knowledgeable about the oscars and their rules. a friend of mine works in cinema so he makes it his business to know the ins and outs of the rules. its kind of boring to be honest, but he sometimes explains technicalities in the rules.

Madonna could probably release a Bulgarian folk version of Nyan Cat and you'd love it ![]() Although "Masterpiece" didn't strike me as anything particularly special, I think the style of the song is something she should do more of. You'll probably disagree but I think she needs to quit dressing like she was 21 and make a new, more classy image and a new style of music to go with it. As she continues to get older she won't be able to pull off the disco stuff any more. |

What is a commercial opening though? I'm not 100% sure but I I thought I read on a Madonna forum that fans who lived in the US did get tickets to see it and they weren't film insiders or personally invited by Madonna, but they got tickets from some website which I think they paid for. I'm not 100% sure about that since I didn't look into getting tickets since I don't live in the U.S. So would that qualify as a commercial opening?

And have you seen Madonna recently....she dresses like MADONNA and that is what she should be....She looks really classy evoking Bette Davis kinda Old Skool Hollywood style....and the photoshoot with Mert & Marcus is gonna be EPIC! I cannot comprehend! But Madonna was essentially the heart of the Club/Underground Dance scene...she will always and should always be pushing forward and incorporate Dance, And she is making it more personal...if you dont like Masterpiece and think she should do more like it kinda backtracks a bit there....she already has a ballad album out from 1995 lol....why retread the same ground? |

I don't really agree with that. Just because you get older doesn't mean you can't still do dance music and want to have fun. I don't think she should be limited by age. What I've always liked about Madonna is one of the few artists that does uptempo stuff and ballads equally well. I think she should continue to do both. In recent years, she has done maybe too much uptempo stuff and forgot about the ballads. But I don't think she should give up the uptempo stuff completely but keep doing both. I would be bored with her if she just did ballads however lovely they were. I know some people like more "adult classy" music like Adele does but really a whole album of that kind of bores me. Madonna is naturally spirited ballsy type of person so an all ballad direction would be kind of phony and not really her. If she were to change at all, I would like to see more of a guitar indie type of direction but definitely not just pretty ballads although a few here and there are nice.

Yeah, there's no reason why she should stop doing uptempo stuff altogether. I just think she needs to change the way she presents herself (again) At the end of the day, she's a 53 year old woman and she needs to ditch the leotards because it's starting to look a bit weird now.

I wasn't suggesting she only realease only ballads from now on, just that as she gets older her "look at me, I can still wear leotards" thing gets weirder. |

But if you read her recent interview in US Harpers Bazaar, her whole point is why should she be limited by age? She doesn't want her age to dictate how she behaves or what she wears. People make a big deal of the leotard but the fact is she only wore that in one video! It's not like she wears a leotard every time she's seen.

LOL she really wasn't. I was part of the underground dance scene myself for over 10 years. Madonna was always a pop artist, there was nothing underground about her at all. Some of her music borrowed from the club genre, for example with some of her Jellybean-produced music.
I wasn't suggesting she only realease only ballads from now on, just that as she gets older her "look at me, I can still wear leotards" thing gets weirder. Madonna has taken underground dance sounds and brought it to the mainstream in pop songs. She was definitely part of the underground dance scene in NYC when she first started and tried to keep in touch with cutting edge trends. I do think with her last couple of albums she has brought fewer underground trends and used more mainstream sounds and I think that has maybe put some people off of her. After American Life didn't do well, it seems like she stopped trying to incorporate underground stuff as much and did more mainstream dance & R&B. I love Confessions but it's mostly mainstream dance sort of like Kylie without any underground influence like her earlier albums like for example Erotica. |

I think you can still be over 50 and dress 'differently' and stylishly without looking like you're trying to look 30 years younger. Those pictures of her in the black leotard at the Vanity Fair party were a bit rough, IMO.

Why is it weird? She's a pop star. Outrageous outfits and pop music go hand in hand. It would be weird if a regular person wore leotards to work or to take their kids to school. She's always worn stuff on stage that people don't wear in regular life. The state is fantasy and theatre. I don't want her to wear regular suits or evening gowns on stage. A part of her image is an outrageous visual look that screams look at me like a lot of pop artists. I don't think she should give that up.

She's always been good at changing her image, but I think the last few years haven't been her best. With the underground thing, maybe we're both using different interpretations of that. Madonna was definitely part of the scene in NYC, but that was a different scene to the underground dance movements which were growing in Detroit, Chicago, Britain and Europe at the time. Her career was entirely seperate from that. |

Her career was entirely seperate from that. That's the great thing about Madonna. If you don't like her image, she's likely to change it. I didn't mind the leotard with Confessions and Hung Up because it sort of fit in with the 70's disco and Saturday Night Fever. It made sense. I think the problem with her look during Hard Candy was that the album didn't really have a defined theme and look and so her image didn't fit in with the album and make sense. It just looked like she was wearing revealing sexy clothes. I would like to see the new album have a very specific theme and her visual look should work with that theme. |
