No, it wouldn't make it a fairer competition, it would make it nothing more than a pure popularity contest. We have I'm A Celebrity for that.

The money goes to pay for the call plus a contribution to an outside agency employed by the BBC, who collate the calls and provide the BBC with the figures.

It already is a popularity show. Isn't that why it's on prime time TV and filled with crappy VT's and props. Having said that the best thing on last nights show was the donkey.

A programme can be popular and be more than just a popularity contest. Despite the crappy VT's and props (at least we agree on something) it is still a mixture of popularity and skill. I suspect that if it were to become purely about popularity of the celebs and we had a final 5 consisting of the likes of Russell Grant, Anne Widdecombe, Nancy Delolio, John Sergeant etc it would very rapidly cease to be a popular programme and would no longer be on prime time TV.
