OMG I've just signed up for Britannia ....
They phoned up today, and I went for it this time. Mind you, they were able to offer The Matrix / The Matrix Revisited double pack as the free title, I specifically asked for that one, plus of course the normal £40 vouchers.
Have never been a customer of theirs before, and I only ever buy R2 dvd anyway. So I'm wondering if it's possible to save on the p+p charges by getting as many DVD's with the vouchers and to clear down the commitment in one go as possible. If not, or if the prices for everything else turn out to be a bit steep anyway (bearing in mind that it's unusual for me to buy something that's only recently been released, because I prefer to rent first), will probably send the Matrix double pack back. Discounting older titles isn't one of the things Britannia are known for, I believe. |

I have looked at their adverts a few times but though tempting is the introductory offer, the dvds are always a lot more expensive than you can buy on the internet or in sales specials in the shops, so I have stayed clear of them. I had no problems with the company when I was in the cd club.

Good point, I'll check that out. I have had a chance to look at previous magazines, though, and they do sometimes have a few scoops. It's now possible to query prices that members pay for things on their web site, even if you're not a member. http://www.britdvd.co.uk - so have compared prices of things I'm likely to want in the near future with Play247 and keeping my eye on them. Still a few questions yet, such as whether those vouchers can get bonus price items. I'll post if and when it turns up to say whether I'm still going through with it or not.

Just had a look at the website and they want £21 for Shrek, plus p+p.
Even the Bonus price is £18. If you notice they don't publicise their p+p prices, which if I remember from when my g/f was a member was over £2 just for a CD. A regular CD is around £13 plus p+p. Even with the bonus' you're still paying a lot more for stuff you can get cheaper virtually everywhere else. Sorry if I seem on a downer about them but £15 for a CD is a tolal rip-off and I got my g/f to close her account as soon as I found out she was a member. In her mail from them, they recommend a CD each month, and unless you called them and cancelled it was sent out automatically. |

Not sure about their T&C now, but at the time my girlfriend had to buy 6 over 2 years. 6 in one year didn't count, they had to be spread over the 2 years, 3+3.

Personally, I would steer well clear of BM.
I had the misfortune of joining while I was at university. As a poor student, the offer of say 6 CDs for £20 was too much and I signed up thinking that I'd found a way to get my cd's cheaper. Before I knew it, i had their disc of the month appearing. Had a couple of nasty letters from them too when I hadn't bought the required number of items. Just ignored them, and they left me alone. I know that the offers can be quite good at the outset, but after that you will almost certainly realise that you can get things cheaper elsewhere. I get almost all of my dvd's (R1 and R2), and cd's from Play247. Never had any problems, p&p is free, and things turn up within 3 or 4 days of ordering. There's also no ridiculous membership ties. |

Hmmm, thanks. Well, I could still send back the Matrix Revisited twin pack yet.
Have just phoned them up, they're processing the order now. Apparently, on video's and DVD's, the p+p charges are .... one item £1.47, 2 items £1.26 each, 3 items £1.15 each, 4 items or more £1.04 each. Oh, and they also insist that nowadays, six items in the first year does count, as long as they're all regular price ones. So, if I go ahead with it, it's likely that I'll get all six items in one go, I've thought of almost that many movies that I want already. Perhaps it might have been better to have waited for a Music Store phone call instead, though, because p+p is cheaper on that. People say the recommended recording thing is a bit easier nowadays, it can be done on the web site or using automated phone service, so that doesn't really bother me, hopefully I'll be able to set up a speed dial to do it. ![]() It seems that the vouchers you get with the telemarketing offer only give you discounts against regular prices, though, which isn't so good. Thanks for the advice though, I'm keeping my eye on it all. |

Maybe it might not be so bad after all, though. Here's a few comparisons.
Firstly, Britannia .... Matrix Revisited twin pack - free +£1.47p+p Four copies of Scream, use vouchers for £10 discount, £15.99-£10+£1.04p+p each, total £28.12 Six copies of Scream to fulfill commitment, £15.99+£1.04p+p each, total £102.18 Grand total for ten copies of Scream and one copy of Matrix Revisited Twin Pack, is £131.77 Now, if you were to get one copy of Matrix Revisited Twin Pack and ten copies of Scream from Play247, it would cost you £167.89 (that's one £17.99 for Matrix and 10 times £14.99 for Scream). In this example, Britannia clearly knocks spots off Play247. However, substitute Scream for The Wizard of Oz. Still same price from Play247 £167.89, but Britannia regular price of Wizard of Oz is £19.99, so your one copy of Matrix Revisited twin pack and ten copies of The Wizard of Oz would cost you £171.77 from Britannia. So it looks like maybe it's best just to stick to buying the older titles from Britannia, if there are any savings to be made, that's where you might be able to do it. |

Don't know if it's just me, but the recommended recording thing has turned into a joke. As I say this might just affect me but since October, and no matter how I cancel - web, phone, post - I still get the frickin recommended recordings. I'm a member of the video and DVD clubs so sending back stuff I have asked not to receive is getting a little expensive
I've got an account balance of nearly 20 quid just from postage. And before anyone asks - yes I have. So far Britannia have ignored a clutch of emails, 4 letters (including one cancelling my accounts) and their customer care phone line is a joke. In the last year this is only the latest way they've screwed up. It's only my opinion but I'd recommend anyone to steer clear, free (except for p+p) DVDs or not.

bozmorris - this is exactly why I got fed up with them. Every month their crap title of the month dropped onto the doormat. And every month I had to send it back.
I had reminder letters about my lack of purchases, reminding me that I had to buy something. Think I humoured them and bought one cd! After the 1 year membership was up I sent them a letter telling them to stuff it. I haven't used them again since, or any company that appears to work in a similar way. Looking at this from anbother angle, it's like going into a store whose loyalty card you have, and then not being allowed to levae the shop unless you've bought something, or being given a slap round the face reminding you that leaving the shop without buying is against their rules. Maybe a bit extreme, but it's the closest I can get as a comparison. There's always going to be some people who will purchse from a particular retailer and some that won't. if you're happy with the pricing, delivery and customer service of a company then fine, stick with them. |

For joining - you are as mad as a mad person who is madder than mad. Yep, you will never escape - even if you write an say "no more, stop now!" they will ignore you - you are cursed for life (or until you move)
Still for £20 a month there are worse things could happen. |

I've been a member for a while & never had any problems UNTIL NOW -I ordered Crouching Tiger at full price & Scream Trilogy a bonus in November, I recieved CT but not Scream, sent off an email telling them not to bother sending it as it was a Chrissy prezzie. This morning I got a bill for BOTH titles.... cannot get through on phone, no reply to emails >>>>f***ing joke!!!

Yeah I was a CD member and book club , or was that someone else , for a few YEARS . Anyway , the thing I found about the CD/DVD of the month is that you had to tick the box to say you DID'NT want it . Meaning that most people who normally binned their Britannia letters received a nice CD/DVD of the month a few weeks later . I suppose from Britannias point of view it's a good thing as some people would probably say "Ah to hell with it I'll just keep it as it's such a hassle to send it back" . Come to think of it I think that's why I ended up with that Whitney Houston album in my CD collection !!

I would stay well clear as well, I went for them for DVDs but cleared as soon as my 6 was up. I then went for the millennium series Nows but I realised I could have got them as a job lot from audiostreet cheaper than what they are doing.

Hmmm, looks like they might be getting their Matrix Twin Pack back then. Recommended recording doesn't bother me, I knew about that before I signed up anyway. I can put up with less than efficient service too, because I reckon I'm confident enough to stick to my guns (in fact my best so far was talking a £93 refund out of BT which I later discovered that I wasn't entitled to, because I didn't bother to read all the details of the order confirmation when I signed up for the phone line in the first place!)
What really matters, though, is the prices, and I still haven't found a combination of DVD's yet that I'm actually likely to buy for which they compete. |

Britannia's first booboo!
Well, received a copy of Matrix Twin pack plus the vouchers, charged £1.47 which I was expecting, so I paid it.
And today, the nice people decided to send me another copy of the Matrix Twin pack. The delivery note definitely quotes the same account number, no vouchers this time, and this time it says the charge is £0.00 quite explicitly. They've itemised it, of course, and this £0.00 charge is made up of £0.00 for the Matrix Twin pack itself plus £0.00 postage and packing. What a pleasant surprise! ![]() Oh yeah - no "club magazine" from them yet, and it's definitely NOT a "recommended recording" either, I've set up a speed-dial on my phone to check for recommended recordings and cancel them now. Do you reckon I should tell them? They're not getting it back unless they send me a postage prepaid envelope for it. Ok, two copies of the same movie aren't going to be a lot of use to me, but I could always take the unopened one down to the second hand store. (If I was really naughty I could take it to Virgin Megastore and say I bought it from them but it was a duplicated birthday present, and get full RRP for it!) Thanks. |

All good replies, but I've told them about it now anyway, by means of web form, I signed up for a new email address from BTopenworld specifically for the purpose of dealing with this query, so if I get any spam, I'll know that that's where it's come from.
This ought to be self-evident to Britannia, because my Britannia membership number forms part of the email address I've given.A bit of psychobabble if I may. To be honest, I think part of the reason I signed up with them was because I've heard mixed reports about them, but I'm attracted to anything that might be a form of psychological overcompensation for lack of confidence when I was young, and having to go to speech therapy when I was really little. Ok I know that sounds crazy but there it is. I like the challenge of standing my ground and sorting the mess out. Maybe that's not a million miles away from Tyler Durden in Fight Club having fights with people for no better reason than that it feels good. ![]() But that doesn't mean I sign up for anything that anyone slags off in a public forum or the press! I WON'T get involved in anything that a) is clearly uncompetitively expensive, or which I won't need, or b) involves pre-paying when there's no opportunity to check out the supplier's credentials beforehand. That's why I won't sign up for ViewDVD subsctiption DVD rental, for example. But I don't have either of these problems with Britannia. Now to deal with points people have raised. ![]() Glen> That's good, thanks. As I say, I've got the delivery note that confirms it's no charge at all, not even p+p, and I'll hang on to it. If they change their mind on this, then I'll use this delivery note to argue that they can't. trevor> I know what you say about unsolicited goods, but I was under the impression that the T&C's paves the way for recommended recordings, so, once you've signed up, whether anything they deliver constitutes "unsolicited goods" gets a bit more complicated. Not sure where I've put my copy of the T&C's yet but I'm sure it'll pan out ok, as I say they've already confirmed there's no charge for it, and there has been no indication that this was due as a recommended recording either. Even though I haven't received my first magazine yet, I have taken active steps to find out if there are to be any recommended recordings so that I could cancel them as early as possible, and so far their automated service has told me that there aren't any that they're waiting for a reply on. As for the nine months, is that nine months after I've received it, or nine months after I cancel membership? Either way, that thread in General discussion about reselling or buying lost and found mobile phones http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/...threadid=16119 made me think that perhaps it might only be three months. Can someone clarify this? Thanks.

On the surface, doesn't look too bad to me, but haven't really looked around yet.
There's the two free DVD's if you recommend a friend. That's given me an idea. If you could get, say, four people in on it together, then you could all keep refer each other in a circle ... that is, you refer a friend, a friend refers another friend etc and you fulfil your commitment and cancel membership. Then someone refers you again and it goes back round again .... Of course, if one person is more keen on collecting dvd's than another, then you could easily trade them between yourselves. Wish I'd thought of this before signing up, I'd have been able to plan it then, I do have a few friends who buy DVD's like I buy bread and milk ..... |

I don't know about anybody else, but I value my friends too much to get them involved with Britannia.
