So I've just been online and read that '21' has now passed 3,400,000 copies and so far ranks as the 11th biggest selling album of all time in the UK! I know there have been various threads about '21' but as much of a fan as I am - I was surprised when it reached 2million, and then 3million - it's still in the Top 5 and is approaching 3.5million...

not surprising. if you play a popular song/artist for 3 months straight, you'll get those sales.

I honestly never expected Adele to have the biggest selling album worldwide of 2011 and one of the biggest selling of all-time in the UK - I'm sure I'm not alone there. It obviously came at just the right time, plus it's an amazing album. It's refreshing to see someone like Adele have such massive success when it's usually reserved today for people like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Justin bieber.

Phenomenal achievement, especially considering how low album sales are these days.

Oh look, someone who slags Adele fans off for posting in Taylor Swift threads now appears in an Adele thread with a pathetic attempt to discredit her undoubted success.

Sad.

I think it will get there. Let's face it, if '21' doesn't sell 20 million I don't think any album in the future will tbh. She's going to be 15-15.5 million shipped by year end and anything up to 8 million ahead of her nearest rival.

It's a really lovely album. I still listen to it regularly and the songs just don't get old for me because there's so much feeling in them. I hope it continues to sell well

At this rate Adele will have the no 1 single and album of the year. I don't know when was the last time anyone achieved such a double for the year.

I still have to turn the radio off every time she comes on, all her latest singles have been overplayed and overused in shows to death... i just can't bare listening to her anymore.

Shame because I used to like her, I can't even listen to 19 now.

I'm just sick of the sight and sound of her. They need to put her on a boat with Rihanna and Gaga and just let them float around for a few years.

I think DS need a quote of the day, if they did this would win it hands down.

so buying an album in a supermarket is less of an involved choice than downloading it off itunes?

as supermarkets will be the only place we'll be able to buy physicals soon, we better not condemn the practice outright

Chill, it's GL, we all know she has an agenda when it comes to Adele. I can't think why, it's not like Adele is totally mullering her fave in her homeland. Oh, wait a minute....

Its understanding what the term supermarket atist means. My local tescos had both her albums realy cheap on a stand at the checkouts along side the mars bars and chewing gum, thats product placement to sell an album to any random who will buy it, its not put their for fans of the artist. Tescos are obviously clued up on the sort of people who will buy her albums and its clear its mostly randoms.
I would love to know how many copies of 21 are now collecting dust in CD racks al over the country after having one play. Isnt it called throwaway music. Would guess over half of her albums sales have gone to randoms just picking it up on the cheap to see what all the fuss is about. That is the only logical answer as to why its sold so many copies.
TBH I would hate to be a fan of an artist that sells albums this way it just seems so worthless.

Well her first week sales were 208.000 those people like me had bought 19, the continuing 11 weeks saw a rise after the brits performance tallied a million copies someone like you hits number 1 airplay gained more people buy it hits 2 million thats how she did it also tesco knows how much they can make off that album= sell cheap lots of revenue again you hate Adele dont like her whatever stop diminishing her achievements and explain how shge sold 5 million in the US and 560+ in autralia etc

Also a large amount of sales were down to downloads too and even if over half went to randoms that is still 1.7 million who enjoyed it

No it isn't. Perhaps people like her music.

Just a quick question - if that is the only logical reason as to why an album could sell that many copies so quickly, in the words of your own good self, then that must be the case for Queen, Michael Jackson, and indeed, Taylor Swift?

Of course not. Her music is just very popular. Someone Like You spent 9 months in the Top 40. It would be nothing short of ludicrous to not acknowledge how many people love her music.
