Is Lady Gaga the Prince of this era?
I know alot of people like to brand her the new Queen of Pop just like they did Britney ten years ago but no one will ever match Madonna imho.
Anyway I think Lady Gaga is the Prince of this era. Prince changed music in the 80s pretty much in the same way Gaga has now. I think its Lady Gaga and Prince who share more of a common ground. |

I see what you mean....but again she wont match Princes influence culturally! Nor musically.
Lady vaga is immense at what she does...but Prince really pushed new sounds the whole sense of identity, sexuality and funky grooves....he had poignant sonvs from the get go really. But i do see what you mean....i dont think she is "the Prince of this generation" she is just lady vaga take it or leave it. She wont be Madonna, or MJ or Elvis or Prince of this generation....she is just lady gaga...the here and the now lol. Its like me saying Adele is the Whitney of this generation and Katy Perry is the Mariah Carey of this generation. Know what i mean....the artists are just what they are. You love them or dislike them for what they do....and Lady gaga sure has a range of influences to who she is today BUT she is her own type of artist. |

I kind of agree with Josh I can see what you mean but really she's Lady Gaga and Prince is Prince ect. There's no need to compare artists just think of them as themseleves.

She'll build up to a great pop opus in her first decade then fade into obscurity yet still making money and decent records for herself and fans. She'll never hit his cultural level but nobody could do that ever really. Also they have nothing in common except for a demo of hers that sampled when doves cry and of course heel height

I agree with you josh but I also kinda see the OP's point of view.

Lady gaga will have her impact but on such a smaller scale....for what she has achieved politically, her influences and now developed a core fanbase...i do see she will have a kinda Prince by-way-of Cher style career....never truly fade out of consciousness BUT make music for respective fanbases for the sake of the music as opposed to commercial performances. |

No, for several reasons;
1. Prince can play pretty much every instrument. 2. Prince has flawless vocals. 3. Prince had a much bigger cultural impact. 4. I think Gaga's too intelligent to fade away from the scene like Prince has, unless she wants to. |

I personally don't think Gaga is the new anything, I like her for who and what she is...not for who I can redundantly compare her to in order to hype or detract. She's a terrific popstar who has achieved so much and I believe has a lot more yet to give. She is the first Lady Gaga, and that's all you need really. End of.
p.s. I thought this was going to be about pretentious levels, and I was going to add...not even Gaga's pretentiousness could rival Prince and his symbolic reinvention.

Not for me. Prince's talent is undisputable. The same can't be said for Gaga, hence all these threads.

She already HAS. If you compare Gaga's career to date with Madonna, at the same point in her career, Gaga has achieved so much more.
True Blue, Madonna's 3rd album sold 24 million and was the biggest selling album of 1986. Want to say again that Gaga achieved more than Madonna did at this point? ![]() Madonna's first album didn't have the success Lady Gaga's first one did but Madge worked her way in slowly. This is why her career is so much better. Madonna peaked TEN YEARS into her career. Lady Gaga peaked with her career ONE YEAR in. So by the time Madonna's backlash came, 1993, she had a big enough name to survive it. The same remains to be seen with Lady Gaga. But plently are now already starting to say how sick of her they are and the anti articles are coming thick and fast. To be honest though. You cannot compare 1983 with 2011. Lady Gaga will burn out so fast no one will remember her come 2021. Unlike Madonna who will always be remembered. I agree with the OP. If anything, Lady Gaga's career will follow the exact, or very similar, path to that of Prince's. |

I love the way soma Gaga fans try to make out Gaga has had more success in these 3 years than Madonna did. All you need to do is do a little research LMAO. I can't be bothered to list all the evidence because it's obvious 'little monsters' will ignore all the facts anyway because they are despaerately trying to change music history with the sole purpose of erasing Madonna's legacy. Quite sad really. BTW I'm a Gaga fan but it is getting a little ridiculous. |

Lady Ga-Ga is not, nor ever will be, close to Prince as a musician, songwriter or cultural influence. What she is, is the natural successor to Madonna. |

![]() Of course, you couldn't download then and indeed had to get up off your backside and travel into town (quite often-no Tesco's or Sainsbury's stocking albums then either at cut price discount) to purchase something that in real terms cost more than it does today. No internet, no You Tube, MTV was seen by a select few and only TOTP and the Tube on TV as such, so yes it is a bit silly to compare the two because it highlights Madonna's success was all the more astonishing. As for the Prince comparison, I can see her the OP is coming from, but Prince was/is far more talented and I am not sure (perhaps someone could explain) how Mrs Gaga has set the agenda for music currently, which acts are copying her and who has had direct success as result of the supposed musical agenda she has set? Bearing in my that by her own admission, she has been highly influenced and is a huge fan of Madonna and Grace Jones in particular, who is actually leading who?. |

Ok then if you are going to use that argument, it makes Gaga fans constant obsession about Gaga's sales irrelevant because it was different then compared to now. So how can they say she has been more successful. You can't imply her selling 5 million is the equivalent of lets say 15 million 20 years ago, it's impossible to guess because who knows if that is a correct ratio. It's all pure speculative rubbish. Lets also not forget artists didn't churn out an album every year and release singles every five minutes like they do now. So chart statistics and sales shouldn't even be compared, but that doesn't stop the Gaga fans does it. As leosw4 said it makes Madonna's acheivments even more astonishing. So I'm not surprised you get Madonna fans countering the argument. If it is incomparable why bother!. why not just enjoy these artists without constantly pitting them against each other. Yeah right! and pigs might fly! So how has Gaga achieved more with sales if people keep saying you can't compare sales then to now? Lets talk in terms of cultural impact instead of sales, fan hysteria and the sheer phenomenon of Madonna in the 'Like a Virgin' era, Gaga hasn't come close, even with the emergence of the Internet and instant access to all things Gaga. What would it have been like if Madonna had the Internet then too LOL. Also her pro Aids awareness and her pro gay politics she stood up for in those days when it was considered taboo and controversial etc etc etc.....you can argue this till the cows come home but her history and impact cannot be denied or erased. |
