For me, today's popular music is pretty much a "no" with a few exceptions. This contains some interesting facts.

Music was always better in my day.

in my day I hated pretty much all music.

I really like most of that music now.

I'm getting old.

I'm mixed on that chart. I have that Shania Twain album. Mainly because of that leopardskin catsuit in the video in truth. However, I don't think I'd ever get tired of smashing a good sized brick into Katy Perry's talentless face.

While there is still good music being made I agree that much of the stuff that charts is rubbish but then isn't half the attraction of music as a kid/teen that the oldies (and sadly I'm including myself in that) don't like it?

Not sure there are many kids listening to Celine Dion or Barbara Streisand mind you

There is some good music around still, but for me, certainly not the X Factor and boyband type crap that's infected the music business for the past ten years.

(For clarity, my definition of good recent music is stuff like Blackstone Cherry and Black Country Communion).

No. That's not to say that all todays music is crap, just the popular stuff. Now and then i'll enjoy a song/artist that's in the charts but it's rare.

It's a pile of shit, and that is why music is largely irrelevelent to everyone today, including youths.

The percieved value of music and musicians today is next to nothing. The only musicians making money are those who appeal to people who were around in the days where musicians were percieved as important artists.

The last observation is hilarious. Pop music is in a lamentable state compared to that of 25 years ago and more. But today's kids seem to be the first generation post war that generally have little interest in music per se, and tend to buy purely into hype.rather than consider quality.

Having said that there is still plenty of good stuff around today, but it gets little airplay on mainstream radio. If you want to listen to decent music you have to search for it much harder.BBC 6 music is a good starting place.

There have been a few good songs in the last say year or two, but for the most part, no. before that I generally hated pop music, so no to that too.

However there is some good new music, in genres like drum n bass and dubstep, but it is not "popular"

But when was the popular stuff ever not crap. People remember the 80's as some golden age but most of the stuff was rubbish. Jivebunny anyone? thought not...

There's probably plenty of "proper" music still around if you know where to look.

Like most other facets of society these days, the big-selling stuff is all corporate-backed, mass-market, lowest-common-denominator crap though.

Speaks volumes that every time some clever advertising campaign decides to use an old Hendrix, Stones, Aretha Franklin (or whatever) track it inevitably ends up back in the charts.

In 30 years time, do you suppose teenagers are going to be re-discovering Justin Bieber or Katy Perry or do you suppose it'll still be old Beatles, Stones and Hendrix music that continues to sell?

*wanders off to listen to 'All Along The Watchtower' just cos...*

This time last week my favourite radio dj played music by these people.

The Beach Boys (Know Thy God L.A. Trip Edit), Ruede Hagelstein & The Noblettes, The Field, Chrome Sparks, The Divided Circle, Darkstar, Dirty Projectors + Bjork, High Places, Miracle Fortress, James Ferraro, Sushi, Oneohtrix Point Never, Seefeel, Falty Dl, The Magnetic Fields, The 6ths, Puro Instinct, John Maus, The Sound Of Lucrecia, Nicolas Jaar, Jacaszek, Burrows, Kate Bush, Peter Broderick, Ólafur Arnalds and Fennesz + Sakamoto.

And this evening's show is similarly comprised of very fine music indeed. I have no idea if any of those have any position in the pop charts. Popular rarely equals best.

Big No - says I!!!!!!!!!!!

I think songs that are forgotten about three minutes after you've heard them, aren't good. The way something can be at number 3 one week and next week fall out of the top 30, is ludicrous.

You know the old music has not gone away you guys can still listen to it.

I used to be a big the who, police, bob marley etc fan but I grew out of it, I enjoy todays music very, very much and don't really like the opinion that my choice of music is somehow "wrong" because someone else dosent like it.

One thing I willagree with is that music is no longer about the artist and the lyrics, more about the sound and that is what I like.

The popular music in the charts all seem to be mostly pop and hiphop songs targeting teenage girls nowadays. When I was a lad in the 90's there was plenty of rock and techno in the top 50 at any given time, but that all seems to have vanished.

If you stay away from the mainstream chart stuff there is actually a lot of quality music out there. You just need to put a little effort into finding it.

I think it is an awful pity that mainstream radio and award shows tend to reward commercial mediocrity than true musical talent.

No, on the whole. I really only listen to Western art music anyway, and my interest in that stops around 1916.

(although I've enjoyed Rebecca Ferguson's new album)

Imo today's popular music is absolutely terrible. Can't stand Rihanna, X Factor singers, Katy Perry or any of that crap. I don't listen to the radio and take no interest in the charts. Most music I listen to is from 70s,80s,90s and some from 2000. I really like using Youtube because it's a great way to find all these classic songs that I have missed out on, it's so simple to find any song on there. Artist's I knew a couple of songs from that I liked I can check out their whole back catalogue, it's great! At the moment I'm discovering many good songs from David Bowie, The Smiths and Jack Johnson.
