Can you eat rump steak if it is 2 days past its expiration date, and if it is now brown all over and not red?

Sounds gross but I'd probably smell it and if it smelt ok, I'd cook it and hesitantly taste it. If it tasted ok, it is ok to me, but then I'm a bit primal when it comes to this kind of stuff so if you do this and get ill, don't sue me.

Really, I think you should be safe if you cook it.

Yes. It still won't taste of anything though until you drown it in a sauce for flavour.

Yes, should be fine. It should be brown. The bright red beef you see in the supermarket is not properly matured.

My future MIL swears that it tastes a lot better when it's browned over rather than red! I would still eat it, providing it smells ok.

It doesn't smell, so I am going to eat it with a mushroom sauce and chips

Try smelling it, if it smells ok, then by all means eat it

Sell by dates are a bit of a joke. They put sell by dates on honey ... which people have eaten after thousands of years it being stored in Egyptian tombs. They also put sell by dates on Marmite which would probably last as long as honey.

If it looks OK and doesn't stink then it is probably good to eat.

If you're still worried then you can also marinade it or give it a spice rub. It will help with the texture and colour.

I don't bother with sell by dates too much. Especially with fresh foods like veg and meat. I'll happily eat the likes of a wrinkled pepper as long as it isn't mushy.

I imagine it's a legal requirement, plus it guards against stupid people eating stuff they've had for 10 years.

It is law yes, and thankfully they are assessing whether to abolish use by dates, leaving only sell by dates.

That's the worse thing you can do if you are unsure of freshness you need to be able to smell and taste the meat not disguise the flavour. Having said that steak should be matured so would be brown if it was done properly, bright red meat is not matured enough.

.
Marmite will last to the end of time and will even survive diagenesis and HPHT metamorphism.

Of course you can. It should have been 'hanging' for three weeks already, so a couple more days won't do any harm. Meat shouldn't be 'red', if it is, it's been doctored. It should be a dull purple colour.

is an expiration date the same as an expiry date? Otherwise, the answer is yes, unless it fails the smell test.

No. You should throw the rump steak out, chastise yourself for ever buying such a poor cut of meat and search out a tenderloin steak instead.

Oh dear, no. Rib-eye is the leftovers of a rib roast - and the roast is the only good use for the rib cut, I wouldn't have a steak from it.

Tenderloin is the best steak cut, if prepared right, and cooked properly to either rare or blue, it falls apart in your mouth and the juices are insanely tasty. Rib-eye's a little fatty for my own liking, and that can ruin a steak.

Personally, I'd go for a Chateaubriand cut off the tenderloin, that's my favourite bit of meat ever.
