Thanks for the information Shrewn. Have you had chance to listen via a PC/laptop yet to see if you can identify the commentator more clearly? A quick websearch doesn't bring up a name I'm afraid.

For my money, BBC Sport Wales does a very good job of utilising their sporting archive - not just through Scrum V and their other rugby nostalgia programmes, but with their recent football documentaries on the rise of Swansea City through the divisions and last week's one on the Cardiff City v Swansea City rivalry. It would be great if the network decided to follow their lead in this area.
Yes they do - Scrum V classics which they show during the Six Nations season.
I still think it's Bob Hudson, who along with Peter West (it def wasn't him) shared the games with Bill McLaren in the early 1960's it seems. Nigel Starmer Smith, Cliff Morgan and DPJ came later

I can't think of any other example of a broadcaster having a commentator and a co-commentator with the same name, especially in the same sport and the same competition. Let's hope for fun they pair up Woods and Woods on a match before the tournament is out.

Sadly I'm not much of a rugby league fan but I did watch some of the Wales match because it was being played in my home town, and I don't think any of the personnel were actually introduced at any point, I only recognised Noble from his brief in-vision appearance at the start, which is a bit rude.
It's been done a few times already on the channels championship rugby league coverage. Dave Woods & David Woods they put on the graphics, even though they are both known as Dave.

It is Peter West. From his autobiography Flannelled Fool and Muddied Oaf p180 "I was in the TV commentary box...when Wilson Whineray's fifth All Blacks side suffered their only defeat, at the hands of Newport, on a filthy afternoon at Rodney Parade".

Thought Andrew Voss on the NZ versus PNG game tonight was brilliant and very funny indeed, great rapport with Darryl Halligan and Brian Noble, they all bounced off each other.
Best RL commentator bar none, would love to see him replace the unfunny Eddie and Stevo show on Sky, no chance sadly.

Thanks kentkiwi for the confirming who the commentator in question was and also to Shrewn for taking the time to have a listen. I appreciate both of your efforts.

I was thinking that as well. I didn't tune in until about 2.10pm as i waited for the Reading v QPR match to finish before switching over. When i did tune in it was on a commercial break, before joining the Hankey v Waites match halfway through the 3rd leg, which was very strange.

Scotland v Japan (Viagogo RU Autumn Test, Murrayfield)

BBC One Scotland (& BBC Red Button) - Dougie Vipond hosted with Doddie Weir (as usual doing his best to keep the Tartan fashion business afloat) and Chris Patterson, Commentary is/was from John Beattie and Andy Nicol, and Chris McLaughlin player interviewer.

It won't be a while until most of the pitch is covered in divots, it's taking a right battering today!

Don't know if you saw it, but I was a bit taken aback by how dramatic the opening montage was. It felt like the start of a Grand Slam decider rather than an AI against Japan!

Ireland v Samoa (Guinness RU Autumn Series, Dublin)

BBC Two Northern Ireland (& Red Button) - Stephen Watson hosting from their Belfast studio, with Ryan Constable and Eddie O'Sullivan. Commentary is from Jim Neilly and Reggie Corrigan.

Wales v South Africa (Dove Autumn Series)

S4C - Gareth Roberts hosted pitchside (at first) with Gareth Davies, Nicky Robinson and Gareth Edwards. Commentary was from Huw Llewellyn Davies and Dr. Gwyn Jones. Dot Davies was player interviewer as well as some fans pre-match. Derwyn Jones was tactical analyst in their OB truck.

Space was small in their studio, as with 4 people there, it felt you could touch Nicky Robinson (nearest to the camera) through the TV screen.

France v New Zealand (RU Autumn Test)

Sky Sport New Zealand - Tony Johnson and Justin Marshall (commentators and presenters) with Grant Nisbett 'chipping in' to tell you of substitutions, etc.

The NZ rugby union has also recently started to stream its games live via their Youtube channel to countries to which there is no respective channel showing a game of theirs. Full games are slowly being uploaded to their channel with no geo-blocking.

It was the other way round. Grant Nisbett, as ever, was the main commentator, with Tony Johnson on the sideline. At home Tests Ian Smith is in this role while Tony Johnson presents. Sky NZ give the sideline commentator a wider role. He is free to chip in with analysis as well as giving news of subs etc.

Thanks.

Nothing to do at all with the rugby, but I like how New Zealand TV is also now taking on the (literal) naming of channels, as I saw one during a half time advert break for a channel called 'Jones' (similar to our 'Dave').

Nigel Starmer-Smith did World Feed commentary for Italy v Australia. Was he also used on Sky's Red Button coverage?

Why did the BBC get rid of him?

Looking at 3:10 on this video, a howler by the female interviewer asking the coach of the Cook Islands how he felt about narrowly losing... When they beat Wales in the RLWC!
