Sunday 9th March - BBC One

Live Six Nations: England v Wales

John Inverdale presented from Twickenham alongside Sir Clive Woodward, Jonathan Davies and Jeremy Guscott

Commentators: Eddie Butler, Brian Moore and Martyn Williams, with Andy Nicol providing in-game analysis

Reporter: Sonja McLaughlan

Anyone know who commentated on the England v Wales rugby sevens match which followed the XV man game on the BBC Red Button?

Sunday 9th March - ITV4

Darts: PDC UK Open Championship

Matt Smith presented from Butlins Minehead Resort alongside Chris Mason and Alan Warriner-Little

Afternoon Session: Quarter-Finals

Kevin Painter v Mervyn King - Stuart Pyke and Chris Mason
Terry Jenkins v Brendan Dolan - Jim Proudfoot and Alan Warriner-Little
Adrian Lewis v Mensur Suljovic - Stuart Pyke and Chris Mason
Michael van Gerwen v Ian White - Jim Proudfoot and Alan Warriner-Little

Evening Session: Semi-Finals and Final

Terry Jenkins v Michael van Gerwen - Stuart Pyke and Alan Warriner-Little
Mervyn King v Adrian Lewis - Jim Proudfoot and Chris Mason

Terry Jenkins v Adrian Lewis - Stuart Pyke and Alan Warriner-Little (legs 1 to 10), Jim Proudfoot and Chris Mason (leg 11 onwards)

Ned Boulting was ITV4's reporter, although presenter Matt Smith conducted the post-match interviews with both finalists on the stage after the final.

Earlier in the tournament, Isa Guha (a former England women's cricketer and a presenter on ITV4's Indian Premier League coverage) worked as their secondary reporter on the Friday and Saturday, while Dan Dawson covered for Jim Proudfoot - who was away commentating on Absolute Radio's Premier League coverage - in the commentary box on Saturday. Behind the scenes, Keith Deller and BDO MC Richard Ashdown worked as ITV4's spotters.

Sunday 9th March - BBC Two Wales

Scrum V: Six Nations Special

Jason Mohammad presented alongside Lyn Jones, Jonathan Davies, Robert Jones and Gareth Llewellyn

England v Wales - Eddie Butler, Brian Moore and Martyn Williams, with Sonja McLaughlan and S4C's Dot Davies conducting post-match interviews
Ireland v Italy - Eddie Butler and Phillip Matthews
Scotland v France - Andrew Cotter, Jonathan Davies and Chris Paterson

Stat Pad (review of England v Wales and preview of Wales v Scotland) - Sean Holley
England Under-20s v Wales Under-20s & England Women v Wales Women - Lowri Morgan (reporting)

Interesting to see Jason Mohammad returning to present the latest Scrum V: Six Nations Special after regular Scrum V Sunday host Ross Harries had presented all of them this year before yesterday. It was also noticeable that it was an all-Welsh panel with no representation from relevant weekend/forthcoming opponents England or Scotland. Sean Holley joined the team in the studio for his Stat Pad pieces and the footage from the Under-20s game was captioned as being "pictures from Sky Sports." There was no closing montage voiced by Carolyn Hitt as there had been on all of the previous shows, I guess this was due to the programme going out on the day of the Wales game.

To answer my own question from the other day, the BBC Red Button's commentary team on Sunday's England 7s v Wales 7s game at Twickenham was James Burridge and Mike Friday.

2014 Six Nations - Round 5 (BBC One)

Italy v England (Sat 15 Mar)
Presenter: Jason Mohammad
Pundits: Lewis Moody, Carlo del Fava & Sir Clive Woodward
Commentary: Alistair Bruce-Ball & Andy Robinson

Wales v Scotland (Sat 15 Mar)
Presenter: Gabby Logan
Pundits: Andy Nicol, Shane Williams & Martyn Williams
Commentary: Andrew Cotter, Chris Paterson & Jonathan Davies

France v Ireland (Sat 15 Mar)
Presenter: John Inverdale
Pundits: Jeremy Guscott, Keith Wood & Thomas Castaignède
Commentary: Eddie Butler, Brian Moore & Phillip Matthews

So it is Alistair Bruce-Ball that gets the third game, not McNamara or Eykyn. Slightly surprised at the use of Robinson as co-comm rather than having Moore do that game.
I imagine it's subject to change, but given the games this weekend they're pretty much taking the punt that the title will be decided in Paris (for whichever of the four teams) so want Moore there instead of Rome
Given that Wales v Scotland is a "dead rubber" in the greater scheme of things, I can see one of Gabby Logan or Andrew Cotter - or even both - switched to Italy v England.

Italy v England is almost a dead rubber too though - very very slim chance of England winning the tournament, and even if they do it won't be determined at the time of that match.

It's funny how things work out though - on paper France v Ireland as the last match looked very questionable considering how both have performed over the last couple of years, but here it is as the final match and the decider.

Swapping Gabby Logan for Jason Mohammed on Wales v Scotland would make sense, particularly as the game is taking place in Cardiff and Jason might well be presenting Scrum V: Six Nations Special the following day.

I don't see them switching Andrew Cotter and Alistair Bruce-Ball around though, they almost always seem to have the Scottish-Welsh combo of Cotter and Jonathan Davies in the box for that one (I know Chris Paterson is there too this year), while having an English commentator for the Italy v England game seems to make sense too.

So it is Alistair Bruce-Ball that gets the third game, not McNamara or Eykyn. Slightly surprised at the use of Robinson as co-comm rather than having Moore do that game.
Might this be a case of BBC Radio 5 Live pulling rank here, as opposed to Alastair Eykyn's BT Sport commitments precluding him from working on BBC TV?

I have long held the view that I can see the sense in this if this is the case - for me it is better to have consistent voices on BBC Radio both UK-wide and in the Celtic nations rather than having one station lose a key voice on the decisive day of the tournament (see also Gareth Charles of BBC Radio Wales and Jim Neilly of BBC Radio Ulster). I've not followed their coverage but I'd guess that Radio 5 Live will be using Ian Robertson and Conor McNamara on France v Ireland, Alastair Eykyn and Iain Carter on Italy v England and Gareth Lewis on Wales v Scotland.

Eykyn and Roberstson normally cover the 'biggest' game so I would expect both of them to be on France v Ireland, with probably McNamara, Carter, Lewis and Burridge spread over the other two games.

in the rounds 1 to 5 ( in centre stage ) Ashdown was reporting everything back to Ned..

Worthy of note in this thread is that tomorrow will be Huw Llewelyn Davies final international rugby commentary for S4C. He continues until the end of the season for Pro12 games.

Huw has been the main commentator for those that watch God's game in God's language since 1983.

Probably most famous in recent times for picking up the main BBC comms at last years Italy v Wales game after Andrew Cotter became ill during the first half.

Tuesday 11th to Friday 14th March - Channel 4

Channel 4 Racing: The Cheltenham Festival

Clare Balding presented from the course with Mick Fitzgerald, Alice Plunkett, Rishi Persad and Ted Walsh

Nick Luck presented from the studio with Jim McGrath and Graham Cunningham

Commentator: Simon Holt

Betting: Tanya Stevenson and Brian Gleeson

Alastair Down and Gina Bryce contributed through pre-recorded features and preview pieces. This was the team involved in Channel 4's live coverage, I'm not sure if there was anyone else involved in either The Morning Line or the late night highlights show.

Gina Bryce presented the Morning line, and i'm sure Rishi Persad was presenting the highlights.

I think Alice presented the highlights and The Morning Line I saw ( Tuesday ) was Nick Luck. So i think they might have all being involved.

Alistair Bruce-Ball's TV commentary of Italy v England is really poor. It's as if he thinks he's on the radio - he's literally describing EVERYTHING that the viewer can see. He's even saying where on the pitch they are.

Surely when you come from radio you would make a conscious effort to adjust your style? He's doing a radio commentary for TV.

On first impressions Alastair Bruce-Ball was a nightmare to listen to. Darren Fletcher of commentaries. Headache trying to follow. Out with radio mode, I found him rather dull and forgot Italy were playing at times (although so did Moody and Woodward). Andy Robinson was a good listen however.

No changes then from that post in terms of line ups today.

Reporters
ITA v ENG: Sonja McLaughlan
WAL v FRA: Ross Harries
FRA v IRE: Jill Douglas.

Only surprise and happy that Jill Douglas got the 'main game'

Definitely a downgrade from Alastair Eykyn although I didn't think ABB was as bad as that, he did talk too much.

Does anyone know what the music they play during "The Tale of the Half" on the BBC? Would appreciate it

Agree about Alastair Bruce Ball, though I'm sure he's done matches before for TV and been absolutely fine.

Must say that Andrew Cotter is becoming one of the best all round commentators around at the minute - heard him on rugby, golf and athletics (and other things I'm sure at the Olympics) and can't really fault him on any of them.

I'm not watching live but Rob Walker is doing the commentary for the closing ceremony of the Olympics - hopefully he'll prove yet again that sports broadcasters rather than newsreaders do a better job of such things.

Sunday 16th March - BBC Two Wales

Scrum V: Six Nations Special

Jason Mohammad presented alongside Phil Vickery, Jonathan Davies, Martyn Williams and Shane Williams

Wales v Scotland - Andrew Cotter, Jonathan Davies and Chris Paterson, with Ross Harries conducting interviews
Italy v England - Alistair Bruce-Ball and Andy Robinson
France v Ireland - Eddie Butler, Brian Moore and Phillip Matthews

Stat Pad (review of Wales v Scotland and an overview of Wales' Six Nations campaign as a whole) - Sean Holley
Wales Under-20s v Scotland Under-20s - Nick Webb
Wales Women v Scotland Women - Lowri Morgan (reporting)

Lowri Morgan also voiced parts of the Under-20s, Italy v England and France v Ireland edits around the commentary clips. Scrum V: Six Nations Special did not include any highlights of the rescheduled Ulster v Scarlets Pro 12 game, which was televised live by BBC Two Northern Ireland on Friday night. Sean Holley joined the team in the studio for his two Stat Pad features, there was a montage celebrating Gethin Jenkins' Welsh record 105th cap, they played some clips from the Sport Relief exercise bike challenge that Martyn and Shane Williams took part in and Carolyn Hitt voiced (and appeared in-vision) during the programme's closing montage reviewing the Six Nations as a whole.

8 people to cover one game ? What ? that is far too many. Why have a "special comments" commentator if you don't speak to him before or after the game ? Just another voice that isn't needed, Sky have as many people covering an 80 minute Super League game as they do a 5 day test match sometimes.

Even on the football they manage with just 6. It doesn't need 4 of them to commentate. I think it's time Stevo and Phil Clarke were put out to grass and Brian Carney used more.
Mike Stephenson has told this month's Rugby League World magazine that he plans on working as a commentator for a maximum of three more years.
