During Friday's coverage, did anyone hear Clare Balding plug TWO BBC programmes? First off, when jockey Barry Geraghty received a digital radio as a prize for winning the first race, she said "he can listen to AP McCoy hosting a phone-in on Five Live this evening" and at the end of the C4 coverage on Friday, she said that "Nick Luck will be on The One Show on BBC1 this evening"

Bit strange I thought, but at least it makes a change from referring to a rival broadcaster as "the other side", like what BBC personnel tend to do (in reference to ITV).

Jim McGrath also made a reference to Luck being on The One Show during yesterdays Morning Line

Speedway Best Pairs Event 1: Torun - Friday, March 28th - British Eurosport

Commentators: Jack Burnicle and Sam Ermolenko
Reporter: Jan Stęchmann

Jack Burnicle, who called the Ice Speedway Gladiators series for Eurosport, replaced Steve Day as commentator for the first of the expanded Speedway Best Pair meetings. And made it almost unwatchable, I can only hope they can find someone else for the SEC.

Dave Goddard used to fly to Dublin every week to call Premier Sport's coverage of the Swedish Elitserien so he should have no problem calling the meetings from London if available. Eurosport International have also taken over coverage of the Swedish league this year, although I have not seen anything to say who will be commentating on that.

New Zealand Speedway Grand Prix - Saturday, April 5th - British Eurosport 2

Presenters (London): Andy Jaye and Scot Nicholls
Commentators (World Feed): David Tapp and Jason Crump
Reporter: Mark Gottlieb

With Steve Day becoming lead commentator on World Superbikes, he has been replaced by Andy Jaye to lead Eurosport's grand prix coverage this season. Last year Jaye hosted on-site coverage for the British GP and World Cup while Day presented coverage from London of the other GPs as well as commentating on the SEC and SBP meetings.

It sounds like British Eurosport will be on-site for the rest of the series too when it returns to Europe, as they confirmed Sophie Blake will be in the pits for the European GP in Bydgoszcz at the end of the month. She had been named alongside Jaye and Nicholls as their presenting team for this year.

David Tapp replaced Wade Aunger who had called the two previous Western Springs meetings since the NZ event was added in 2012. And a vast improvement he was too. (Although in 2012 the series was still on Sky and rather than take the world feed they had Nigel Pearson and Kelvin Tatum call the meeting from Isleworth.)

I'd rather they didn't use Mark Robson on Ulster matches where they're playing another UK opponent.

I think broadcasters are comfortable with mentioning other broadcasters who aren't their direct rivals, i.e. C4 can mention the BBC and BT Sport can mention ITV, but the BBC will never mention ITV and BT Sport will never mention Sky Sports (and vice versa).

BT Sport do mention Sky. They've used clips of SSN and credited them and when Des Kelly had Richard Keys in they talked Sky.

Sounds like they only did it through obligation though.

Was it me or did it seem Simon Holt was not at his very best for yesterdays National?

He seemed to take a long time to acknowledge the fact Across The Bay was being taken out by a loose horse by the grand stands, could of been a important part of the race, and at times he seemed to struggle to get the full names of horses out as they were jumping the fences.

Called the finish well enough but thought he wasn't as strong for the early part of the races..

I didn't really notice it with Across The Bay I thought he called that well, but his stuttering was noticeable at other times. I can only assume it was a problem with the pictures he was getting as it seemed to happen in similar places (as they came towards the Melling Road the second time on the loop)

Yes, I have just listened to racing UK coverage and I belive it was Mark Johnson calling the same incident and he seemed even slower.

Have to say however that overall they commentary on the race was better with no stuttering by the top guys...Stewart Machin also seemed very clear and quick on any fallers.

Just for the record, the course commentators were Mark Johnson, Stewart Machin and Alan Howes while John Hunt, Malcolm Tomlinson, Darren Owen and Gareth O'Brien commentated on the National for Five Live.

Thanks Ian, I couldn't put a name to Alan Howes but he sounded very good, infact the 3 course commentators sounded better than Channel 4's team.

Keeping on the radio theme, Rupert Bell and Martin Kelly commentated on The Grand National itself for talkSPORT, with this being the first time full commentary on the National has been broadcast live on commercial radio.

Interestingly, the commentary set-up was more like a football commentary pairing than the "handover" style that is the norm on National commentaries elsewhere, with Rupert leading the commentary for the whole of the race and with Martin, a journalist for At The Races and Betfair, taking over to provide some analysis (and presumably also to give Rupe a chance to catch his breath) at a couple of points during the middle of the race.

I agree, not exactly an impartial commentary from him yesterday evening. (Although I am a Saracens fan!)

Aviva Premiership - Saturday 12 April (BT Sport 1)

Gloucester v Bath

Sarra Elgan joined at Kingsholm by Bryan Redpath. Ben Kay later joined them at half-time and after the match.

Commentators: Nick Mullins, Ben Kay & Austin Healey

Reporter: Jill Douglas

It's the first time as far as I'm aware that Jill Douglas has been used on Premiership coverage by BT. I didn't hear Martin Bayfield ever get name-checked last night (I just presumed it was him, but as Doyle did the half-time interviews it could have been Ali Eykyn doing pre-match) so I wonder if he's not available this weekend.

What a match though, I've never seen anything like that!

The feature on Leicester Tigers outside-half Owen Williams included clips from the Scarlets v Tigers game from last season's LV= Cup which first put Owen on the East Midlands club's radar, which were credited on screen to Sky Sports/Slam Media, as well as clips of him playing for the Tigers in the Aviva Premiership, which were credited to BT Sport. The commentary on the highlights edit of the Scarlets v Zebre game was taken from S4C's live coverage and their Red Button English language service, although only the lead commentator Cennydd Davies got a caption.

Thanks for this, was a decent feature on Owen Williams, which probably went under the radar for a lot of people in the East Midlands
