Sunday 21st September - BBC Two Wales

Scrum V Sunday

Ross Harries presented alongside Martyn Williams and Dafydd James, with Bethan Clement

Guinness Pro12
Ospreys v Edinburgh - Cennydd Davies and Stuart Davies (as S4C Red Button)
Scarlets v Treviso - Nick Webb
Cardiff Blues v Ulster - Gareth Charles, Jonathan Davies and Martyn Williams
Newport Gwent Dragons v Glasgow Warriors - Andy Moore and Sean Holley (as S4C Red Button)

Principality Premiership
Weekend round-up - Bethan Clement

SWALEC League Division One East Central
Llantwit Fardre v Beddau - Rick O'Shea (reporting on the four Coombes brothers who all play for Beddau)

Interview with Mark Hammett - Ross Harries

Bethan's news round-up was devoted to the WRU's launch of concussion guidelines at Pontyclun RFC earlier in the week and later on she voiced that viral clip of Arkansas State University scrum-half Mike Baska's behind-the-back dummy. Ross and the studio team also attempted to interview Ospreys head coach Steve Tandy in a live link-up to the Liberty Stadium after the edit of their game, but with it being live TV they had to abandon the interview after the sound to the stadium failed!

Sunday 21st September - S4C

Clwb Rygbi: Ospreys v Edinburgh

Gareth Roberts presented from the Liberty Stadium alongside Emyr Lewis

Commentators: Gareth Charles and Gwyn Jones

Red Button commentators: Cennydd Davies and Stuart Davies (commentary in English)

Reporter: Dot Davies, with Deiniol Jones providing pitchside analysis
On BBC 2 Scotland
Callum Macaulay with Andy Nicol in Glasgow

Comms: Hugh Dan MacLennan and Peter Wright

What a bizarre showing for BBC 2's first Pro 12 game of the season. Callum Macaulay started off in Gaelic for a minute then the whole of the rest of the show was in English, Hugh Dan commentating fully in English bizarre also! The graphics etc were the usual Alba graphics and the studio was a wee broom cupboard.

Hugh Dan and Peter Wright were down there as they spoke at pitchside pre-game and the former did the interviews.

Where as here the comms are all seated together
Yep, never really understood why there was the difference, don't know if it's just down to something like cost or logistics
Agree they could all sit together in the US but there is a difference in that in the US each commentator has their own hole and commentates on all action on their hole.

Now that usually only applies for say the last 4 holes though of course at The Masters it goes right back to the 11th where all the last 8 holes each have their own commentator (though with 11 and 12 exceptionally paired).

Each tower commentator also does their own earlier hole:
eg 18 and 14
17 and 13 etc

Or at the Masters:
18 and 10
17 and 9 etc

So it's a completely format to the UK where the commentators cover the entire course.

Plus in the UK the team changes from time to time whereas in the US everyone is on for the entire broadcast (obviously only until their own hole is finished).

NB. All of the above obviously excludes fairway commentators!

Thursday 25th September - YES Network (New York) & BT Sport 1 (UK)

Major League Baseball: American League East
Baltimore Orioles @ New York Yankees - Michael Kay and Ken Singleton, with Meredith Marakovits as field reporter

I don't normally post details of regular season MLB coverage on here, but last night's game was a notable one as it was the final outing for New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium before his retirement at the end of the season. Good to see BT Sport carrying the Yankees regional telecast from the YES Network and making the game available on the BT Sport app. The game was also available on MLB.com as their Free Game of the Day.

Gary Thorne and Jim Palmer were the commentary team on this match for the Orioles regional telecast on MASN. Nationally, the MLB Network had Bob Costas and Jim Kaat on commentary with Tom Verducci at fieldside, while Jon Sciambi and Chris Singleton commentated for ESPN Radio.

Friday 26th September - BBC Two Wales

Scrum V Live: Edinburgh v Scarlets

Ross Harries presenting from the studio alongside Robert Jones and Phil Davies

Commentators: Gareth Charles and Scott Hastings

Reporter: Phil Steele

The game isn't on the Red Button on Freeview and I don't think a Welsh language alternative commentary is available tonight due to Ryder Cup highlights being on that platform instead.

The Rugby Championship - Saturday 27 September (Sky Sports 3)

Round 5 - Argentina v New Zealand

Rupert Cox presenting from the studio alongside Sean Fitzpatrick and Gonzalo Camacho.

Commentators: Grant Nisbett, Justin Marshall & Jeff Wilson (as SKY Sport New Zealand)

It would seem that when the commentators are from another Fox-owned network (i.e. NZ or Aus) then the network will get a mention on Sky Sports as they hand over to the commentators.

Sky Television in New Zealand has no connection with any Murdoch company, News Corp sold its entire minority stake to institutional investors early last year.

And Fox Sports in Australia did not become part of 21st Century Fox following the de-merger but transferred to the new News Corp as a subsidiary of News Corp Australia (formally News Limited)

I hadn't realised that Sky NZ was nothing to do with the Murdochs. All I can say is lucky them!.

Anyway...

Newport-Gwent Dragons v Treviso (Guinness Pro12 RU) (Sunday)

Gareth Roberts hosted from a temporary structure from the North Terrace at Rodney Parade, with man mountain Derwyn Jones. Commentary came from Gareth Charles and Dr. Gwyn Jones, with Cennydd Davies and Sean Holley doing the english red button alternative. We also had Gareth Rhys Owen as pitchside reporter/interviewer, with Dwayne Peel there with him sometimes, and used throughout the game.

Edinburgh v Scarlets - Gareth Charles and Scott Hastings
Leinster v Cardiff Blues - Nick Webb

Principality Premiership
Saturday round-up - Bethan Clement

SWALEC Bowl First Round
Llangefni v Rhosllanerchrugog - Rick O'Shea

Interview with Wayne Pivac - Ross Harries

Bethan spoke to the WRU's Head of Rugby Josh Lewsey in the studio after her news round-up, which was devoted to the WRU's move to forging closer links between semi-professional clubs and schools rugby, about that subject.

They closed out the show with a nice montage and tribute to Dewi Griffiths, who this weekend retired from presenting his long-running BBC Radio Wales Sunday morning programme A String of Pearls. Between 1963 and 1993, he was the director of every live Wales game at Cardiff's National Stadium and was also a commentator and reporter for BBC Wales during that time.

Just switched on my television and have seen that not only is there a Red Button commentary option available for viewers on other platforms, but contrary to the EPG listings the game is on Freeview after all! The time has elapsed for me to do a further edit of my previous post, so I thought I'd better post this for clarity.

And for as much as my Pro12 interest lies with the Welsh regions and as such I'd usually much prefer to see Scrum V Live on 601, given the Ospreys' Italian opposition I agree with LOSG that BBC Two Northern Ireland's coverage of Ulster v Edinburgh would have been a better option tonight.
