From what I saw Davies and Wood only did a brief piece to camera before the game where Inverdale asked them about the home nations record against Southern Hemisphere sides

On the Andrew Cotter front, I think it provided a neat fit for them, he's used to doing recorded pieces to camera and it allowed them to have him doubled used on a weekend where Mohammed, Douglas, Chapman, Inverdale, Logan, Harries, McNamara etc were all otherwise engaged

It also gave ABB the chance to get another live game under his belt. The BBC need a third commentator for the Six Nations and the only way he'll improve is by doing more games

Sunday 9th November - BBC Two Wales

Scrum V: Autumn Series Special

Ross Harries presented alongside Gareth Thomas, Robert Jones, Jonathan Davies and Jeremy Guscott, with Sean Holley at the Stat Pad and Adam Jones at the bar

Autumn Internationals
Wales v Australia - Eddie Butler, Jonathan Davies and Keith Wood, with S4C's Dot Davies conducting interviews
England v New Zealand - Andrew Cotter and Brian Moore
Scotland v Argentina - Alistair Bruce-Ball, Andy Nicol and Phillip Matthews

Feature on the reaction to Wales v Australia in the newspapers and on social media - Bethan Clement
Feature on the history of the Wales v Fiji fixture (included interviews with Brian Price, Josh Matavesi and Tom Shanklin) - Bethan Clement

As you might guess given the reference to the bar, the programme was filmed at the "Scrum V club" studio that is used for their Six Nations specials during the spring, complete with a four pundit panel and a live studio audience (including one fan who left their phone on, which rang during the final five minutes of the show - live TV!).

The highlights of the England and Scotland games were only brief tries edits and for those wondering there was no coverage of Ireland other than a graphic detailing the other scores given how the BBC no longer hold those rights.

Anyone know who the commentator is describing the Wales XV v Fiji match, the visitors' first in Wales, in 1964 as shown at the start of the feature on the Wales v Fiji fixture?

It did work. Jiffy and Wood were commentating but did a brief piece to camera from pitchside before the game.

BT did something similar at the Prem final with Kay and Healey commentating but doing some kind of pitch demo IIRC inside the ground pre-match, with Dallaglio, Dawson and Shaun Edwards presenting with Doyle in the West Car Park.

I have been watching the darts on Sky Sports this evening and there was a trailer on earlier claiming that Phil Taylor has won 16 PDC World Championships. This of course isn't true as the first 2 of Taylor's World title's were when he was part of the BDO before the PDC even existed!

No it is you who is wrong, the trailer said 16 times champion of the world, which is correct. It never mentioned 16 PDC titles, just 16 titles.

I rewound it time and time again before posting, and it clearly said 16 time PDC World Champion. When the trailer focused on Barney it was correct though as it only mentioned his 2007 PDC triumph.

Wood ok - as he is a studio man - but Matthews on the Scotland game was so out of place. ABB and Nicol would have been fine.

I didnt see it but i know in the past they have always said 16 times World Champion, they never usually mention the PDC. Like Barney is introduced as 5 times world champion.

So you claimed that i was wrong without even watching it yourself? Yes i know when they introduce him on stage they (mainly (John McDonald) always say 16 times champion of the world, but this was an actual trailer advertising their coverage where there was a caption on screen stating 16 times PDC World Champion.

I only watched the Wales v Australia game at the weekend, so can't comment on the Scotland match coverage, but I felt Keith Wood was a bit superfluous to requirements in the commentary box at the Millennium Stadium.

For the most part, Eddie Butler and Jonathan Davies handled commentary duties with Wood seemingly only chipping in when the play had stopped for a prolonged period. He didn't annoy me as Phillip Matthews sometimes does when he's covering Wales games, but I felt he was an unnecessary addition to the team. That said, Wood is used to working in a crowded commentary box when covering European Champions Cup games for Newstalk radio in Ireland, who tend to call upon two or even three co-commentators for live games played in Ireland. But in a TV setting I don't feel the third wheel role really worked for him.

He'd be better as a studio pundit, but it's difficult to know where to use him in the autumn now that they no longer have live rights to Ireland's Autumn Series. I think the most obvious thing to do would be to put him in the Jeremy Guscott role at Scotland's games with Jerry continuing as the third pundit from outside of the competing nations at Wales games, or vice versa from week to week.

I do sometimes wonder why the BBC bother doing their own commentary for their England highlights - presumably the Sky commentary is available to the with it being host broadcaster commentary and as much as people seem to dislike Stuart Barnes it would surely be better than BBC's third choice rugby commentator (who has several sports listed in his Twitter bio but none of which are rugby).

Especially as the PL have specialist world feeds so they don't even need to take the Sky/BT commentary.
