The dual-presentation tonight is a little bit odd. Doyle and Balshaw have just done the first part of the half-time analysis sat on the sofa and then Bayfield, Kay and Dallaglio did the second part stood by the TV.

They have the potential to invent a new format for Friday night games with this, should they decide to continue with it permanently, and it would be a nice change to the often long-winded buildup from the ground on a Friday night.

Interesting to see an extended advert for next weekend's Champions Cup final in the half-time ad break today, ending with "Why would you watch it anywhere else?"

Of course it's Gary "the red" Neville for Utd games.

It's a nicely sly little dig at Sky Sports there, what with it being (I believe) the first event (after the Challenge Cup final on Friday night of course) where the two go head-to-head on the same match. When you compare the two likely teams they're probably right as well:

BT
Presented by Craig Doyle with Lawrence Dallaglio and Brian O'Driscoll, with commentary from Nick Mullins (I'm guessing, could be Eykyn), Ben Kay and Austin Healey.

Sky
Presented by Alex Payne with Will Greenwood, Scott Quinnell and perhaps someone like Alan Quinlan, with commentary from Miles Harrison and Stuart Barnes.

I haven't seen the trails, but I'm a bit disappointed in BT Sport for that, their coverage speaks for itself, seems a bit unnecessary to resort to sly jibes.

My guess would be that Nick Mullins does the Champions Cup Final and Eykyn the Premiership Final (especially with it now being right in the middle of the French Open tennis)

It wasn't too much of a dig, rather a bigging-up of their own coverage versus Sky's, but in a more subtle way that they have been known to do for football in the past.

I agree with those appointments though. I'm a big fan of Eykyn at the moment and would be more than happy to hear him on both major finals, but I agree that he and Mullins are likely to get one each, and that's deserved as they're two of the best in the business.

BT's lineup for Europe of Eykyn, Mullins, Cotter is a hell of a lot better than Sky's Harrison, Robson, Hammond though.

I agree with you on Eykyn, think he's come on massively over the past 18 months.

Sky's strength in depth never fully recovered from the hole left by Will Chignell all those years back. It's one reason i'm intregued to hear Miles Harrison on the World Cup, think he'll benefit from being away from Stuart Barnes

Mullins or Harrison for the final though? Presuming Ben Kay will be co-comm it's got to be Mullins for me. Harrison and Barnes (though the latter will be on Irish TV) are good for building a big game atmosphere, but in terms of describing the action on the pitch and doing their homework you don't get that much better than Mullins and Kay.

The worry is who will come through when some of the current lot retire? All of the channels seem to be using the same few freelancers after their two or three staff commentators.

I reckon it will be Mullins, mainly because he seems to be the one with the stronger ITV links currently.

That's is a very good question, as you say, there seems to be a very shallow pool to choose from!

Towards the end of the programme they discussed the Leigh Halfpenny v Jonathan Davies clash in next weekend's Toulon v Clermont Auvergne European Rugby Champions Cup Final, and the programme closed with a montage looking back on the career of Lee Byrne, who had to retire from rugby due to injury last week.

Nick Mullins confirms it will be him as expected at Twickenham on Saturday.

Eykyn will presumably do Friday night.

If it's Harrison or Robson on Sky then i'll stick with them if Rory Lawson is alongside. If Scott Hastings is in commentary then I'll happily enjoy Andy Nicol on BT on Friday.

Would suspect it'll be Robson and Evans on Friday, Lawson maybe more likely to be a comm at Bristol for their Championship playoff coverage on Saturday

Sky very low key. It's like a Pro 12/domestic game. Scottish representation in the commbox for BT going with them. Shame it isn't Andy Nicol mind.
