Three people in a commbox is a terrible idea in any sport for me. Hate it in rugby.

Totally disagree, BT have the dynamics working really well, and it also means that when they get in a guest co-commentator there is a more experienced co-comm in there with them to fill some of the space.

That is the problem. There is this obsession with 'filling' space now. TV commentary at times need the space to breath in likes of rugby and football. With every single second taken up with speech or some guy in a truck or whatever sometimes it is OTT.

That's why Richie Benaud was just so good on the cricket. Didn't say a word if it didn't add anything. Had been known to go a 30 minute stint without saying a word as part of the 3 man Channel 9 comm box.

I'm with Pako on the 3 man team not working as a rule. But I haven't seen enough of BT's Rugby coverage to have my opinion backed up.

In Rugby a very odd exception I can accept it. Finals and the like. However sometimes in Sport there seems to be this thing to 'fill every second'. Someone who is at the first step or 2 of the commentary ladder something that has been drummed into me by the experts is quite clearly (co-comm or not) let the pictures do the talking.

In rugby league on Sky we sometimes have 5 in the box - Eddie, Stevo, Phil Clarke, AN Other and Stuart Cummings. Too much

Very good piece in Barry Davies autobiography about co commentators etc. Barry was only a fan of the co-comm summarising and not doing as much as they do now. He praises Trevor Brooking saying how good he was at grasping the role. He hates how the co comm now does almost half the match.

Five is even on the conservative side. Most of the live Super League games are like a free-for-all when it comes to voices during the game and it definitely detracts from the broadcast in my view.

I like it on BT (and ESPN previously) but I hate it on Sky and the BBC where the 3rd man feels a bit pointless. Would rather Harrison and Barnes were left to themselves.

Yes, I think it's more a case of some broadcasters picking pairs of co-commentators badly than anything else. For me BBC Sport don't always make a great choice in the commentary box for rugby union internationals, particularly during the Autumn Internationals when the co-commentators from the Southern Hemisphere are typically inexperienced, so speak less and can feel like a bit of an unnecessary third wheel.

Wales v South Africa last year was a standout example of this for me, having watched the game in a busy venue I didn't actually realise they were using a South African analyst in addition to the main Welsh co-commentator given how little he contributed. I think that says it all!

I haven't seen enough of BT Sport's rugby union coverage to form an opinion on it, but I'm told that generally the third man commentary teams they use work well, mainly because they pick their co-commentators from a small pool of regulars who are used to this style of commentary. I quite enjoy hearing multiple co-commentators on football, given how it's much more of a rarer thing in that sport and how generally you only tend to hear senior co-commentators employed together on more significant matches.

SA commentary teams (bar Skinstad) are terrible compared to NZ / Aus.

I quite like Matthew Pearce's commentaries actually, and Hugh Bladen was OK (although his voice would make you doze off), but Owen Nkumane is like a Scott Hastings who can't quite keep up with play.

It was actually Scott Hastings & Carlo del Fava. Willie Los'e was doing the interview at the end.

Also, BT really emphasising that Mullins & Kay are calling the game off-tube by having Kay make a brief studio appearance before the game.

They have done that occasionally with pundits on their European football coverage. Usually a rare thing. I'm sure they did that last season with the Top 14. Likes of Hugo Southwell would pop between booth and studio.

Having been watching the Queens coverage I have to say that John Inverdale isnt taking too well to the commentary role, he is only concerned with getting the co-commentator to answer questions that he is interested about and not what the viewer would want to know, also having him on the Murray vs Muller match was just awful as he is way too biased. The whole BBC coverage so far has been an Andy Murray Love Festival which it just shouldn't be.

Well I was actually coming here to say how much I had enjoyed John Inverdale doing commentary.

Re the 3 commentators in sports, I think where it does make sense is the 6 Nations so you have someone representing each nation playing.

Not really when you have Jiffy or Brian Moore with Paterson/Nicol/Matthews/Del Fava dominating a three man team with their cheerleading.

Having listened today i can safely say that Andrew Castle is ten times worse, he should simply stick to the Injury Lawyers 4U adverts, he is simply awful.
