He's fantastic most of the time, but it's nice to hear him on terrestrial TV again. I really hope he does the Six Nations for ITV, as I think were he to be doing regular international games he'd be widely considered the best commentator going.

For me i think that is is stronger than Miles Harrison, this isnt trying to discredit Harrison, whom i think is an excellent commentator but Mullins is for me a stronger commentator. Mullins is also very good on the Tennis coverage for BBC and ITV. Looking towards the six nations i would think that it would be Cotter, Butler and Bruce-Ball/McNamara for the BBC and Mullins, Gillingham and Ward or Champion for ITV.

They'll only need 2 comms each for live games, but if the BBC had Butler/Cotter and ITV could get Mullins/Harrison (though Gillingham or Champion instead of Harrison would be decent enough) then that would be an unbelievably strong line-up.

I doubt Sky will let Harrison commentate on ITV, it may be that we only see him on World Cups for ITV. But even then Gillingham is a fine rugby commentator so it would be nice to hear him on the Six Nations for once. It will also be interesting to see what happens with John Inverdale, will it be him on ITV presenting with possibly Mark Durden Smith presenting on ITV as well therefore leaving BBC presenting duties to Gabby Logan and Jason Mohammed.

Round 2 - Leicester Tigers v Harlequins Craig Doyle at Welford Road with Austin Healey, Nick Kennedy and Freddie Burns. Commentators: Andrew McKenna, Nick Kennedy & Austin Healey Reports: Sarra Elgan A name I've never heard of as lead commentator today! For those not familiar with McKenna, his career is steeped in rugby union coverage - he regularly reports on the Six Nations and Autumn Internationals for talkSPORT and was the station's secondary commentator (to John Taylor) on their coverage of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, where he also worked as their reporter in the England camp. He was then promoted to their lead commentator on all ten matches of the 2013 British & Irish Lions tour to Australia. Macca also presented talkSPORT's Sunday night rugby union show Full Contact, which airs weekly during the season, for a few years before Brian Moore arrived at the station and assumed that job. So, he's well qualified for this gig. McKenna is primarily talkSPORT's afternoon and early evening sports newsreader, he's been reading their half-hourly bulletins between 12.30-7pm for close to 15 years now, as well as being a football and rugby union reporter and commentator for the station (as well as his rugby union commentaries, he was one of their commentators on last year's FIFA World Cup), so I guess he knows which side his bread's buttered and won't be turning up on TV on a permanent basis any time soon. But he's a great choice of freelancers to work on a game when a TV broadcaster is a bit stretched for commentators. Hopefully we'll hear him again when the European Rugby Champions Cup gets under way. |
