Wonder if Keith Wood will also do commentary on this match?

Not sure if anything had already been known about this, but Mike 'Stevo' Stephenson will be retiring from Sky's rugby league coverage at the end of the year.

No real changes on the first night of the season tonight. New graphics style though, updated to look similar to the football, with lower case typeface

That's news to me, although in April 2014 he did say he would retire in three years. I think the timing is spot-on, he still knows the game but gets a lot of stick from viewers for being a parody of hmself. I'm sure Sky would like him to stay on but anyone who has been the main analyst for a sport for 25 years is going to struggle to stay relevant and like Jimmy Hill he deserves recognition for his service to the game.

If this is his last stanza then let us enjoy Stevo for everything he's contributed, catchphrases and all.

Jesus - how many people do you need. Carnage voice over load. Studio, 2/3 pundits, reporter and 2 comms in the booth. Simple.

Yeah the pitchside pundits are pointless but the rest is fine, It will be normal to have 3 pundits, 3 man commentary and to be honest It's fine as it is.

To hear 10 different voices for one matches is a complete overload, compare it to a typical ITV Champions league from yesteryear with Chiles, Dixon, Keane, Tyldesley and Townsend. It is an overload. However it will be good to have Flatman on an the Six Nations and it will be great to hear Mullins back commentating on the Six Nations

I wonder if it is just because it is their first game that it is like that. Sky on the Super League on Thursday had 9 different voices on the game because it was first of the season. It won't usually be that many.

The main difference here is that ITV are doing an hour long build up. If it was 15 minutes like the Champions League then I agree with you it would be massive overload on voices, but I don't mind it as much on this occasion.

I think Gordon D'Arcy has been considerably better so far as the Irish co-commentator for ITV than Geordan Murphy was during the World Cup.

Main points (of what I've seen this weekend)

- Guscott bloody terrible.
- 0n IRE v WAL BBC HL's - O'Leary sounds like he hasn't done much co-comms. Wasn't very good based of the highlights show.
- BBC Highlights show was excellent.

- Not seen much of ITV coverage today, bits I've watched tonight - FAR too many voices/people. Obviously will split up a bit when they have two games a weekend but still too much. Should add plenty of good stuff on the whole pundits wise.
- ITV coverage seems very England dominated (more than BBC) - a bit like their football coverage - almost trying to be 'home of England' with rights to both.
- ITV titles/feel with the modern/cheesy/funky quite poor, not quite the neck hair raising Hans Zimmer.
- ITV made no attempt to kinda have similar graphics theme to 6N/BBC style. I know the 6N in-game graphics are a 'world feed' but are very much BBC style on most part, maybe that was ITV's thinking to do something different.

Also BBC had commentary on-site for the highlights game today with a reporter, ITV couldn't be bothered with a highlights show or decent highlights. 3-4 minute blatent solo-comm dubs on the Saturday games online.

I agree with this. I realise the new world-feed graphics are very much in the BBC image, if you compare them to the world-feed graphics of 2014 before the BBC started to use them, but ITV's other graphics do clash quite badly.

S4C probably win that battle as their graphics were all done in the style of the world-feed in-play graphics.

I think the highlights show is a rights issue – IIRC it's the channel that doesn't show the last game that gets to show a highlights show.

Given that I guess ITV didn't see the point in doing anything more than what they would use online and as part of their build-up today.

I wasnt able to see Sundays game, did ITV not show any of Saturdays highlights during Half Time or pre match?

I really agree with your point there, Guscott seems out of touch now. I did enjoy hearing Mike Tindall on the England vs Scotland game and for someone who hasnt done as much punditry he seemed a different level. Re O'Leary he sounded out of place, it didnt work even during highlights. Perhaps it will just be an experiment that just hasnt worked, either that or the BBC will persist with him for the rest of the 6N to see if he improves.
