Slightly apropos of nothing but I was watching one of the Crucible Classics on the iPlayer last night and was rather surprised when I heard a female voice commentating on the match.
A bit of research revealed that the lady in question was Vera Selby, who was the first women's world champion and was part of the BBC's World Championship commentary team in 1982 alongside the likes of Ted Lowe, Clive Everton and Jack Karnehm. I was just struck by how remarkably progressive that seemed for 1982 - and how there are no former women's snooker players used as commentators in these current days of heightened equality. I agree it was very surprising to hear a women's voice being used in the eighties! |

F1 Chinese GP (Sky Sports F1) Presenter: Simon Lazenby presenting from the Shanghai International Circuit in China Pundits: Martin Brundle, Johnny Herbert, Paul Di Resta Commentators: David Croft, Martin Brundle with Ted Kravitz in the pit lane Reporter: Rachael Brookes No Ant or Hill again so Paul doubled up as pundit and Skypad analyst. Simon also presented The F1 Show with Paul and Johnny, while tonight's F1 Report is being presented by Natalie Pinkham and she is joined by Marc Priestley and Alex Lynn. F1 Chinese GP (Channel 4) Presenter: Steve Jones presenting from the Shanghai International Circuit in China Pundit:David Coulthard Commentators: Ben Edwards, David Coulthard with Karun Chandhok in the pit lane Reporter: Lee Mckenzie I would expect the next race to have the same lineup as this race with the highlights program the same length as this race. |

I find it a bit annoying that on Crucible Classics there are no captions coming up with the commentators names, I recognise some of the voices but not all of them.

Semi-Final Leicester Tigers v Racing 92 Craig Doyle at the City Ground with Austin Healey, Lawrence Dallaglio and Brian O'Driscoll. Big news Stateside, as Mike Tirico is leaving ESPN for NBC. He'll be leaving his NBA, golf, and Monday Night Football gigs (among other tasks) but will be the commentator for NBC's new Thursday Night NFL package. Other roles will be disclosed in due time, but he'll likely be a major part of NBC's golf and Olympics coverage.

I really liked Ray Edmonds' commentary. His voice was just perfect for the job. He also knew when to let the pictures speak for themselves.

I seem to remember Ted Lowe also commentated for ITV when they first started covering snooker tournaments but he was soon replaced by John Pullman.
I was a Ray Edmonds fan too. |

Even though he won't be doing the Olympics for either the BBC or OBS I am informed that Barry Davies will at least be doing Wimbledon for the Beeb this year

Commentators: Alastair Eykyn, Ben Kay & James-Simpson-Daniel Reporter: Tim Cocker Aviva Premiership Rugby Saturday 30 April (BT Sport 1) Round 21 Northampton Saints v Bath Martin Bayfield at Franklins Gardens with Ugo Monye, Lawrence Dallaglio and Stuart Hooper.
