Followers of the football comms thread may have been interested to hear Vickerman referring to McKenna as "Macca" all evening. ”

Andrew McKenna's always been casually referred to as Macca throughout his career on talkSPORT radio. I believe Rob Vickerman has co-commentated with him on one or two of the Premiership rugby union commentaries talkSPORT 2 broadcast last season, so I guess it will be a force of habit seeing as everyone else calls him Macca.

Good to hear two people I've always rated from their talkSPORT work - McKenna and Andy Clarke - getting the opportunity to cover live sport on BT Sport and Sky Sports respectively. I think it's likely that we'll hear a fair bit of Macca on BT's rugby coverage going forward, certainly on the European club action given that his only talkSPORT 2 rugby commentary work is on the Premiership. I wouldn't be against Clarkey replacing Nick Halling as Sky Sports' live boxing commentator. Whenever I've heard him commentating on fights - most recently on the latest David Haye and Shannon Briggs fights that he made a fleeting return to talkSPORT to do radio commentary on - he's always sounded strong in his delivery and well prepared. Barring Ian Darke leaving BT Sport to return to their boxing coverage, I feel he's the best option Sky Sports have at their disposal and an upgrade on Halling.

If i were in charge of getting a new Boxing commentator for Sky i would do what i could to bring in Mike Costello. But it is unlikely he would leave 5 Live, he is one of the best Radio commentators in all sports. He really gives a clear picture of the fight and calls them magnificently. He is for me the best Boxing commentator out there.

Yes he certainly is, please don't give them any ideas!

Lots of new voices on the extra Olympic channels.

I've mentioned elsewhere but Butler and Woodward doing all the Rugby for the BBC 7s coverage. Utterly boring they are. Not out of first gear tone wise. Woodward whittering on about nothing half the time.

Woodward is out of his depth here. To my knowledge he hasn't done much co-commentary before and he only played 7s for a short spell when he was playing. It always was a strange appointment, especially since he has only worked for ITV and Sky in the last year. I still would have picked Brian Moore to go along instead, while i know that he is not everyone's cup of tea, for me he is a good commentator as he tells you how it is and isn't afraid to be critical. If anything i do find Moore very similar to Geoffrey Boycott for those exact reasons. But Moore is a proven co-commentator and he works well with Eddie Butler, who i feel has improved as the tournament has gone on.

Was it not something to do with Woodward already being in Rio, he said the other day he was working for the IOC and so saving some travel/hotel costs?

I would have gone for Andy Nicol myself, I like Brian Moore but not sure he played much 7s either did he?

To my knowledge Moore didn't play 7's. I know Nicol managed some teams in 7's but i dont think he played it. I just picked Moore as he is a more accomplished commentator than Sir Clive. It makes sense for the BBC to use Woodward if he is there already, which i wasn't previously aware of.

So they insist it's nothing to do with it, but by mentioning it in the first place, the likelihood is that it is.

Nope them two from first tee to last putt - no break.

Yep. Both have done other sports too on OBS.

Both here on the golf have been terrible. Everytime a player comes on they rattle off the same 10 stats about the player. Plus is we've been on all day with no ad-breaks etc.

Its a real shame the BBC didn't send any golf commentators to Rio, I understand why with the amount of coverage that they will show on BBC4 not being that much. Its a shame therefore that the OBS feed didn't have some decent recognised golf commentators.

I loved Hugh Porter as well but I do think Simon Brotherton is a good replacement.

Alan Wilkins is a recognised golf commentator, just not to UK audiences

David Feherty recently interviewed Peter Oosterhuis on Golf Channel.

Peter was diagnosed with Alzheimers over 2 years ago though only went public last year – indeed he commentated on the 2014 PGA Championship for CBS after being diagnosed without anyone being aware.

When I saw this I sort of thought I might be very upsetting to watch but in fact he is still talking almost normally with a good memory of things from a long time ago. I guess his short term memory may be worse. But if you just watched this in isolation you probably wouldn’t realise anything was wrong.

The whole interview doesn’t seem to be available in one clip but there are several separate links with brief segments of it - see below:
