I don't know if any awards are given for Sports Commentary of the Year, but Simon Holt's just now for C4 Racing must be right up there.

I see that ESPN STAR Cricket's financial issues have seen Harsha Bhogle and Sanjay Manjrekar axed. Jason de la Pena, who was previously awful during about 9 months as Sky's number 4 cricket presenter (the role now filled by Matt Floyd) in 2010 has replaced Bhogle as host. Odd decision considering how poor de la Pena was on Sky - constantly mixing his words and making errors whenever he wasn't reading off the autocue and forming part of a deadpan partnership with John Emburey for Sachin's ODI 200.

Does anybody know who the commentators were for the boxing on Sky on Saturday night? (December 11th)
Quote:
Peterlee- Adam Smith and Glenn McCrory
Washington- Nick Halling, Jim Watt and Matthew Macklin. Dave Clark hosted with Johnny Nelson, Barry McGuigan and Steve Collins in the studio. Going by that it was Clarke's first boxing commentary for Sky Sports. He's primarily a football guy; he was a reporter for talkSPORT between 2000 and summer 2011, a commentator for the Perform Group since at least 2008/09 and last season he began commentating on Premier League games for Football First and PLP's world feed and La Liga matches for Sky Sports (his involvement with their boxing coverage might explain why he seems to have stopped commentating on Saturday night fixtures from Spain on nights when there is a triple bill of live La Liga matches). That said, he's no stranger to boxing - he is/was a white collar boxer. |

Andy Clarke's December 11th commentary wasn't broadcast on Sky, but may have been a test commentary with view to him doing future live events.
Jon Anik did a test commentary recently, with Frank Mir, on an entire UFC event, to prepare him for doing future broadcast commentaries. Viewers only heard the regular team of Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan. |

I know this is going back a little way now, but going by these Tweets I stumbled yesterday - this and this - Andy Clarke and Spencer Oliver commentated on the Ashley Theophane v Ben Murphy fight from Peterlee for Sky Sports on December 11th.
I guess with Ian Darke unavailable most weeks, Adam Smith winding down his commentaries since taking over as Head of Boxing, and Sky distancing themselves from John Rawling since the launch of BoxNation (they have only used him a couple of times since), I suppose they are looking at Clarke as a potential 'number two'. |

New Year's Day - Sky Sports 1 & Sky 3D
PDC World Darts Championship Semi-Finals Dave Clark presented from the Alexandra Palace alongside Rod Harrington, Wayne Mardle and Eric Bristow Andy Hamilton v Simon Whitlock - John Gwynne and Rod Harrington Adrian Lewis v James Wade - Rod Studd and Wayne Mardle Sky 3D commentators (both matches) - Nigel Pearson and Stuart Pyke Rod Studd interviewed both players from the first semi-final and the winner of the second after their respective matches, while Steve Brandon (who Google tells me is a Sky Sports floor manager) interviewed tournament director Tommy Cox and PDC chief executive Matt Porter during the suspension of the second semi-final. Perhaps the most unforgettable night of darts I've ever personally witnessed. Not one any of us who watched it will forget in a hurry. |

I didn't hear the interviews on the darts, but presume it is the Steve Brandon who is probably most well known as the world feed interviewer for the Speedway Grand Prix (providing he had a Kiwi accent). Sky usually end up taking a lot of them, and it seems he works for them during the week as well.

I noticed that he had an Antipodean accent so I'm sure it was the same guy you are thinking of. What I presume is his CV on LinkedIn says he's a freelance floor manager for many Sky Sports productions including their speedway coverage.
A noticeable feature of Sky's coverage of the PDC World Darts Championship this year is that they have conducted most of their interviews with the players on the floor rather than in the studio with Dave Clark as in past years. Usually these are conducted by Rod Studd or Stuart Pyke. With both of them in the commentary box during the stop-start Lewis v Wade match, I guess they felt Steve Bradon was the best qualified member of their off-air crew to carry out some unexpected (but helpful) interviews about the stoppage with PDC officials. |

PDC Darts Final 2012
Commentators 3D: John Gwynne and Stuart Pyke HD: Rod Studd and Wayne Mardle I am glad I have 3D, the better of the two commentators are on 3D!! Mardle is still annoying as hell in the box, OK in the studio though. Nothing of the brilliant Nigel Pearson tonight, I imagine down to talksport commitments today?

Monday 2nd January - Sky Sports 1 & Sky 3D
PDC World Darts Championship Final: Andy Hamilton v Adrian Lewis Dave Clark presented from the Alexandra Palace alongside Rod Harrington, Wayne Mardle and Eric Bristow Sky Sports 1 commentators: Rod Studd and Wayne Mardle Sky 3D commentators: John Gwynne and Stuart Pyke Dave Clark conducted the post-match interviews with both players on the stage and was then joined by Harrington and Mardle (but not Bristow) in the studio for some impromptu punditry to take the coverage up to an 11pm finish. Is this the first time they've had the same commentary pairing for the duration of the final on the main Sky Sports channel? I guess with Sid Waddell and Dave Lanning unwell and retired respectively there's not the pressure to divide it up between three voices anymore, which has been what they've done for the final for as long as I've been watching it. I was surprised John Gwynne didn't get to do the final on SS1 but it shows the standing of Rod Studd who I think has had a fantastic tournament. Studd and Mardle must now be viewed by Sky to be the number one pairing in the absence of Waddell and I think the duo work well together. I know Wayne is a marmite figure but I think he's improved a lot from last year when he was overly jokey, he seems to have calmed down and is more analytical in his co-commentary. |

Sid Waddell wasn't at Sky for the first final in 1994, so that would have been Dave Lanning and John Gwynne throughout.

I couldn't believe it when I heard Wayne Mardle was getting the main role for the World Darts Final
![]() ![]() ![]() I agree that Wayne Mardle is a good pundit in the studio but is very poor as a co-commentator. It was bemusing to think that John Gwynne ( the best commentator in terms of excitement and passion in the absence of Waddell in my opinion) was being overlooked in favour of the hopeless Mardle. I can't see why Gwynne and Rod Studd weren't given the job on HD and SD but I can't remember them ever being paired together throughout the tournament even though they should be the No.1 commentary team. Even Stuart Pyke would have been a better choice in my view. I agree that Rod Studd has had a fantastic tournament though. He has really stepped up in the absence of Waddell and shown that Sky can rely on him for the big matches. Can't wait for the return of the fantasmagorical Waddell though!! ![]()
