Has there been any mention anywhere on here of the death of Lord Oaksey?

Lots of press coverage - the Daily Telegraph devoted the first 3 pages of its sports section entirely to him a couple of days ago.

Made extremely interesting reading - from him giving up on an expected career in the law because he loved riding so much - to all his work with the Injured Jockeys Fund - to his very near miss on winning the Grand National - to him voting in The House Of Lords before he was allowed to as he hadn't been sworn in.

A most varied life.

A couple of slightly surprising choices in their coverage team there. I don't think Jim Proudfoot's ever covered darts before, and is this the first time Rob McCaffrey has been on UK TV since his move to Dubai a few years ago? Agreed with you that it's good to have John Part back on co-commentary duty after a few years away.

Just been watching the triathlon highlights on the BBC and it got me thinking, is Matt Chilton commentating on site or offtube for Ski Sunday? For the triathlon he mentioned that they were in Stockholm so I assume he goes to all the meets, however, it is never specified whether he is on site for the skiing. I think he's great by the way, just would love to know if anyone can confirm whether he goes or not, cheers.

Offtube, and usually it is dubbed on afterwards as he tends to commentate on the women's World Cup races on Eurosport as well during a typical weekend.

Credit to him, he pulls it off though.

Yes, it's website lists it for Monday 17th on Sky Sports 2

He does, sadly I think Matt Chilton gets less credit than he deserves. Not many commentators are able to pull off being knowledgable on the amount of sports he's worked on.

Can think of him working on Alpine events, Freestyle Moguls, Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Triathlon, Tennis and possibly snowboarding a few years back amongst others

Not to mention a fantastic pudit for ITV and later Channel 4 for their Horse racing coverage....remember when he and John Rickman presented the ITV 7 on a Saturday afternoon?

Are ESPN going to have this commentary team doing the BDO Winmau World Masters in October or will they have Tony Green and Vassos Alexander? Sadly they probably won't have David Croft who said at the Lakeside this year it would probably be his last BDO tournament.

On the commenators, John Part was brilliant for the BBC, Stuart Pyke is also brilliant on ITV and Sky. Proudfoot is great on football but he hasn't done darts but then again I never heard John Rawling do darts before ITV started showing the Grand Slam and I have never heard Rob McCaffrey so I can't comment on him.

Thanks very much to both of you; does he go to all of the triathlon meets? He seemed to strongly suggest he was in Stockholm (and the triathlon seems to be his main gig apart from Ski Sunday).

I agree with you by the way, he's really versatile and covers very different sports extremely well. Switching between triathlon and skiing must be much harder than say, football and rugby (not that that is easy!).

I didn't find out until yesterday. A true gent and a credit to his profession. RIP Lord Oaksey. (I even remember him riding Carrickbeg to a Grand National second many years ago.)

Happy to be corrected on this but he seems to be at more of them now as the BBC have broadened their coverage around London 2012. Whether things will go back to how they were previously now the Olympics are over will have to be seen

Hugh Porter and Rob Hayles commentated on the Tour of Britain stage one for ITV4.

Sadly Porter was back to his Olympic road race form, unable to identify the likes of Ivan Basso or the winner Luke Rowe until Hayles' interventions.

I'd forgive him Rowe... there was so much glare from the sun. on the finish line camera that it was impossible to see who anyone was. They were just little silhouettes heading towards the camera.

Ridiculous decision. Harsha is infinitely better than Sunil Gavaskar who is as entertaining with the mic as he was the bat #zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
