Major League Baseball Championship Series 2012; Fox, TBS (USA) & ESPN America (UK)

National League Championship Series

Fox Pregame and Postgame Show presenting team - Matt Vasgersian presenting with Eric Karros, Harold Reynolds and AJ Pierzynski (from Secaucus, New Jersey)

St. Louis Cardinals v San Francisco Giants - Joe Buck and Tim McCarver, with Erin Andrews and Ken Rosenthal as field reporters
I imagine we should note it here that Joe Buck called Game 1 of the NLCS straight after calling the NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants.

Great to hear your views on the TV coverage of the Major League Baseball Playoffs Li4m. To pick up on a few points...

I honestly don't know if there's much between Sutcliffe and McCarver. I was only able to watch about four innings of Saturday's game, but I couldn't have disagreed more with his praise for Miguel Cabrera's work at third base this year or his sarcastic tirade against defensive shifts and sabermetrics. There are better analysts who seem to be out of work during the postseason (Mike Krukow, David Cone, Brian Anderson - the one who covers the Rays, not the Brewers play-by-play man who works for TBS on the play-offs - and Ray Fosse, to name four) and I would prefer to see them involved.
Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper from the Giants' local telecasts during the regular season are working with Jon Miller and Dave Flemming in a four man booth for the team's local radio broadcasts during the postseason on KNBR, which I think has been the case in past years as well.

I can't speak for Rick Sutcliffe's work on MLB International so far but I did listen to some of his work with Gary Cohen, Ron Darling's partner on SNY's New York Mets coverage, during the first two games of the Giants-Reds NLDS on ESPN Radio (thankfully when that series switched to Cincinnati it was mostly on 5 Live Sports Extra, as ESPN Radio brought in Chris Berman who I can't stick to work with Sut). I thought Sutcliffe sounded alright when working with a commentator who IMO sounded a lot like Gary Thorne. I know why he's marmite and that some of his views (his recent ones of Melky Cabrera for example) can be a bit out there, but I like his upbeat manner, his familiar accent and intonation. I guess that might have a fair bit to do with growing up with his work on Channel 5's coverage of Wednesday Night Baseball and the postseason when I was growing up, for similar reasons I've never had a problem with Joe Morgan despite many critics disliking his work.

For the World Series last year I synced up ESPN Radio (annoyingly this wasn't an option on MLB.TV, which only gave us the option of local Rangers and Cardinals coverage) with my TV; commentary was from the ESPN Sunday Night crew of Dan Shulman, Orel Hershiser and Bobby Valentine. I rate the first two pretty highly, Shulman especially, and I know that they'll be doing the World Series again this year. I don't know whether Terry Francona will be joining them (he's been part of the Sunday Night Baseball team this year, but now he's agreed to take over as Indians manager next season he might not be involved), but I hope so.
Dan Shulman and Orel Hershiser will be doing the World Series for ESPN Radio, they're currently calling the ALCS having done the ALDS between the Yankees and Orioles and the AL Wild Card Playoff.

Before he was appointed Indians manager, Terry Francona was scheduled to call the World Series with Dan and Orel and to also cover the NLCS with Jon Sciambi for ESPN Radio, but since his move back into management he's just listed to be a "guest analyst" on ESPN Radio's World Series coverage. I'm not sure what that will entail.

It'll be interesting to see if ESPN look to move someone into their Sunday Night Baseball team in 2013 in order to keep the three man booth they've had with various voices since 2008 going, perhaps someone like Nomar Garciaparra, or if they'll just settle on Shulman and Hershiser. I guess they'll make a decision on who if it's the former in the next few weeks.

ESPN Radio also have the superb Boog Sciambi, who is doing the NLCS this year I think (Shulman and Hershiser are doing the ALCS).
Definitely agree with you on Boog - I listen to ESPN Radio's MLB coverage a lot and having initially took a little while to warm to him (which I now put down to how he sounds very different to the typical radio baseball announcer, he has a much younger sounding voice and obviously is a lot more neutral), I really enjoy his work.

Sciambi is indeed doing the NLCS with his usual ESPN Radio partner Chris Singleton rather than Francona. For as good as I'm told Francona is, I'm actually really pleased Jon is being teamed with Chris for this because I think as a duo they are much more than a sum of their parts. I don't think either are particularly amazing as individuals, but they work so well together - they have a really good rapport, share a similar sense of humour and know when to talk and let the other speak. They have been really enjoyable to listen to on the NLCS so if you are not that enamoured with Buck and McCarver its worth giving them a shot if you can sync the ESPN Radio feed up with the pictures.

I didn't realise that, so thanks for pointing it out. It's like that I'll be watching the Giants v Cardinals game tomorrow via MLB.TV and I'd have opted for the Giants radio feed anyway, but it's nice knowing that I can look forward to hearing from all four of them.

I take your point about how familiarity can breed fondness. I don't particularly rate Jerry Remy as an analyst, but I really enjoy listening to him and Don Orsillo call Red Sox games. This was the duo that I heard most frequently when I got into baseball (and is still the pairing I hear most often). I daresay that if Remy was someone I only heard now and again, particularly if he was commentating on games not involving the team I support, I wouldn't find him particularly appealing.

Sutcliffe's main problem, for me, is that he's too old school and is unwilling to accept that certain aspects of baseball have changed since he was a player. This isn't a character trait unique to him - many ex-pros seem to think this way. If anything, increased acceptance of sabermetrics and progessive thinking within baseball organisations and fanbases has only strengthened this attitude that the ex-players are right and the statheads are wrong because they've never played the game. There is still much that a former professional can add as a broadcaster, but I find it disheartening that so many are so reluctant to even consider the merits of advanced statistics or think about whether the assumptions they've always held about the game might, in fact, not be entirely well-founded.

Incidentally, on the subject of Joe Morgan, you might be interested in this piece by Russell A. Carleton that appeared on Baseball Prospectus in July (I don't think it's behind the BP paywall, but let me know if it is).

It's a shame if Francona isn't going to be fully involved in ESPN Radio's World Series coverage, but it is understandable, I guess. I was rather hoping that the Indians might not get round to appointing a new manager until November.

The Sunday Night Baseball commentary team is interesting. Bobby Valentine will obviously be available to return to the fold, but I'm not sure I can see that happening. I certainly hope it doesn't happen. As it's ESPN's flagship live baseball game of the week, I would imagine they'd look to keep the three-man arrangement. As for who fills Francona's chair, I don't know. I've never really watched ESPN's live Monday and Wednesday night games so I couldn't really give an informed appraisal of the internal candidates. Maybe they'll go outside the organisation.

Finally, Cubs play-by-play man Len Kaspar wrote this for Baseball Prospectus today on the subject of 'Bringing Sabermetrics to the Broadcast Booth'. Kaspar and Bob Brenly are a pairing I really like.

Thanks for replying and posting those articles, both of them work for me and were interesting reads.

On Bob Brenly, it has been reported that the Arizona Diamondbacks are considering taking on either Brenly or Steve Stone from the Chicago White Sox's local TV coverage (who I believe does bits for MLB on Fox as well) as their replacement TV co-commentator for the outgoing Mark Grace, who is leaving the organisation along with play-by-play man Daron Sutton. The D-Backs are said to be particularly keen on Brenly, as you'd expect with him having managed the team to their 2001 World Series win.

Stone ruled himself out the other day (although we all know that always doesn't mean anything)

Money might be the biggest issue with Brenly, I read somewhere that in the top three highest paid announcers. Personally I'd be quite happy to see him stay with the Cubs!

Clearly I cursed it............WGN have just said that Bob Brenly won't be returning next season.

So it looks like he'll either be going to a national station or heading to Arizona

The Diamondbacks have announced that their new broadcast team will consist of Steve Berthiaume - currently one of the two main hosts of ESPN's Baseball Tonight, along with Karl Ravech - and Bob Brenly.

I've not heard a lot of Berthiaume's play-by-play stuff. He's not been a regular commentator for ESPN, doing the odd game (including, oddly, the Yankees v Rays game 162 in 2011 - odd because it was such a big game) here and there. He did the All-Star Futures Game in July alongside Aaron Boone and Rick Sutcliffe. I'll be interested to see how good a commentator he turns into, as he's a very accomplished presenter.

This news also raises the question of who takes over on Baseball Tonight. Jon 'Boog' Sciambi has filled in in the past, but a full-time gig might mean giving up (or, at least, reducing) his ESPN Radio commitments which he might not want to do.

Not if they continue asking for £500,000 that's for sure.

As with most of these things it'll probably get sorted out a few days before, either that or Sky may get them to commentate off tube from London as I can't see them wanting to take the host feed now!

did say couple of months ago that i did see BCCI charging sky if they did use they own commentatory team. been reading other forums and that some people are saying BCCI brought the production rights for reason, so they can have more power and not be reliant on the Murdoch empire for the productions of its games, also some people are even saying that they are not allowing sky it's own commentators team since they are frightened about sky talking bad about BCCI and india, with one world feed BCCI can control all aspects of the coverage including the commentatory team.
very interesting Battle between the Murdoch and the BCCI, also a note BCCI also has difficulties dealing with other Murdoch companies from all over the world.
