Were they still using 3 comms at a time ?

Yeah, they were using 3 comms at a time, would have been funny to see the Supersports feed when Ackerman was taking the mickey of Channel 9 boys not knowing how to use the technology.
McGrath was good, but was struggling to commentate with Slater and Healy.

The official line from Channel Nine last year was that he wanted to 'ease his workload' and started to do a few less games than previously.

As with all these things i'm not sure whether that's just PR or whether it was actually what he wanted to do

I was so excited about watching this game, stayed up until pretty late to catch the first session. In my mind the first hour of the opening morning is THE most engrossing and interesting period of a test match; batting's tricky (you only get thoroughbred strokes) and the new ball means that there is so much going on to keep you interested and excited.

This was almost totally, and I really mean this, ruined by the excruciating commentary of Ian Healy who was inexplicably the main commentator for the first half an hour. He wouldn't stop talking. It was a stream of consciousness which featured "banter", english which often made no grammatical sense, a massive and flagrant pro aussie bias and even talking OVER deliveries. He talked and talked and talked, adding pretty much no tactical insight, destroying the natural tension, at one point he even did a (terrible) Bill Lawry impression.

Why couldn't he let the cricket speak for itself? He was in the commentary box with Richie Benaud (much missed in the UK) and the comparison was staggering; Benaud said maybe three things in the whole half an hour, each one of them concise and insightful (about Pattinson's bowling action for example), the rest of the time he just shut up. He knew that the viewer was there to watch the cricket, which Healy clearly didn't understand. It was the first time I have ever counted down the minutes to a change in the commentary box.

I'm sorry if this seems harsh, but, I was genuinely seething after last night. I was so looking forward to relaxing and watching the test. I know commentators often get flak for talking too much but Healy was the next level last night. Just please, please shut up.

you not the only one Channel 9 must be one of the worst commentary team ever, they even make the worst Indian commentator look good, At least Shastri and Gavaskar talk about cricket and know when to shut up.

Richie Benaud said that Bill would be back for the remaining five tests of the summer.
There was a live in-vision interview with Tony Greig from his home in Sydney. He is having major surgery next week, to be followed by chemotherapy. He said that he aims to rejoin the team for the Sydney test in the new year.

Good summary. Commentary, like all broadcasting, is not just about what you say but also about what you don't say

I watched both of them through the IRB website. TSN (Canada) also showed the Samoa V Canada game, and I believe the Russia V USA game was on Universal Sports' (USA) website.

Any idea why SSN are going so big on the England v Fiji match this morning?
I know it's an international but I wouldn't have thought it was THAT big a match to justify the number of people they have there and the amount of time they have spent on it.

It does seem a little bit over the top. I guess it's all part of the countdown to the Lions tour next summer, and these are the only international matches they'll have before then.

Supersport Sooth Afreekar - Not sure who the presenter was, but in the studio with him was Nick Mallett, Victor Matfield and Stefan Terblanche, with Naas Botha analysing tactical play. Commentary was from Matthew Pearce, Vernon Komani (?) and John Smit.

France v Australia - ESPN

Studio: Mark Durden-Smith with Brian Smith and Pete Richards

Comms: Simon Ward and Ollie Phillips

I like how they've used a presentation team. Albeit (not surprisingly) they've used their football offtube cheapness tactic of having co-comm (Richards from earlier game) appear in studio just couple hours later.

There are/were. Last night's game, I think between Ospreys and Gloucester was on Sky Sports while London Welsh/Exeter is on S4C tomorrow.

Next Saturday Scarlets vs Cardiff is on S4C and Newport/Gwent vs Northampton is on Sky Sports on the Sunday
