Don't know if happened yesterday as I was watching the Hawks/Kings game, but I kept feeling sorry for Doc Emrick today as there were countless times when he asked Pierre questions and he didn't answer them as he either didn't hear them or must have been doing something else

The one-in-the-booth-one-between-the-glass just didn't work. You also had spells of Emrick talking non-stop for what seemed like forever, which isn't ideal when he's not exactly frugal with words on commentary in the first place. I hope it was just for the opening weekend. Anyway...

Was he commentating or just providing innane chatter and anecdotes?

They were both with her in the studio before the match too. Not much of a surprise as it wouldn't have been worth sending them out there for three days.

On Eurosport Simon Reed commentated on all five sets along with Frew McMillan and Mats Willander who swapped set by set.

Most likely the latter. He used to be one of the better commentators too.

Since BBC have cut back on Australian open the commentary has been on-site... Can remember Andrew Cotter a year or 2 back travelling over and then 5 or 6 days later was on the 6 Nations.

I remember one year, maybe even two, that they used Chris Bailey as he is Australian based now.

He is an excellent commentator

They used him for quite a few years (certainly 2006 onwards) on the Red Button (and then on the main channels for the finals) alongside John Lloyd and Sam Smith. Up to and including 2010.

2011 it was Cotter replacing Bailey.

2012 and this year have both been off-tube Semis and Finals with Castle and Lloyd as a result of the cutback in coverage.

I miss Bailey though I thought he was fantastic. He used to come back for the Wimbledon fortnight as well but hasn't the past couple of years.

Unless Castle and Lloyd invested in a new Concorde plane to get them from Melbourne to Sydney in minutes

I was just going to say what LOSG said as I only got freeview and red button at the start of 2010 so they had coverage on there all morning live from Australia but the last two years has been disappointing in the least and I think the fact most is through the night bar the finals means it won't be commercially viable for ITV or Sky. If BBC bothered to cover it properly on the Red Button with the odd match on BBC Two or BBC One as previously then I wouldn't complain.

Andrew Cotter adding another sport to his commentary bow. He's in Glasgow alongside Steve Cram and Paul Dickenson in the commentary box for the Athletics.

Rather interestingly ATR are showing the racing from Cheltenham too. I wonder if they can show races that are also on C4

EDIT - Apparently it is because the Victor Chandler was originally due at Ascot which is an ATR track. For now
