Sunday 17th February - TNT (USA) and ESPN (UK)

NBA on TNT: The 62nd All-Star Game

Ernie Johnson Jr presented from the Honda Center, Houston, Texas alongside Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Webber, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley

Commentators: Marv Albert, Steve Kerr and Reggie Miller

Reporters: Craig Sager (Eastern Conference sideline) and David Aldridge (Western Conference sideline)

I stayed up to watch this and thoroughly enjoyed both the game and the broadcast. I don't often watch live basketball, is TNT's coverage always this much fun? With it being the All-Star Game I guess they were playing for laughs more than they would on a serious postseason game, but the commentary was so full of life and humour, the courtside interviews (featuring Craig Sager's loud suit) were great and the halftime report - featuring a cameo from a comedian called Kevin Hart - was an absolute riot. I don't think me attempting to sum it up would do it justice, all I will say is that no-one really said anything about the first half.

Sunday 17th February - BBC Two Wales

Scrum V

Ross Harries presented alongside Shane Williams, Robert Jones and Jonathan Davies

RaboDirect Pro12
Scarlets v Munster - Gareth Rhys Owen and Tom Shanklin*
Edinburgh v Cardiff Blues - Gareth Rhys Owen
Connacht v Ospreys - Phil Steele
Newport Gwent Dragons v Glasgow Warriors - Gareth Charles and Robert Jones

Interview with Dan Biggar - Ross Harries
Interview with Ryan Bevington - Gareth Rhys Owen
Montage previewing Italy v Wales - Gareth Rhys Owen

*Although only Gareth was captioned, you could clearly hear a co-commentator during the edit, so I assume Scrum V must have taken the English language red button commentary from S4C's live coverage of this match which, going by Ian's post over the page, was done by Gareth and Shanks.

There were no highlights from the club game in Wales on the show, with it being the second round of the SWALEC Cup over the weekend.

This seems to have flown under the radar a bit and I only read about it on Twitter today, but Hugh Porter has stepped down as cycling commentator for the BBC. Simon Brotherton was with Chris Boardman for the track World Championships yesterday.

There was a video about him during the programme

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl1pZMP2tsM

At the end Jonathan Edwards said Porter will be in Sochi next year for the Winter Olympics, I presume to commentate on the speed skating once again.

I wonder why he has stepped down. Real shame

It's a shame but he's getting on. Brotherton doing a good job though. The best thing about Hugh Porter was his voice and ability to convey excitement to casual viewers as a commentator he was making very many mistakes by the end.

Brotherton is doing well and improving. He dealt with the last race on BBC Two today very well. He knew exactly what was going on.

Friday 22nd February - BBC Two Wales and BBCi

Scrum V Live

Ross Harries presenting from the studio alongside Sean Holley and Rhys Williams

Italy Under-20s v Wales Under-20s

Commentators: Gareth Charles and Stuart Davies

Reporter: Phil Steele, with Dafydd Jones providing analysis from pitchside

Ospreys v Edinburgh

Commentators: Nick Webb and Tom Shanklin

Red Button commentators: ? with Welsh language commentary

Reporter: Gareth Rhys Owen

BBC Two Wales had been hoping the timings of tonight's double header would dovetail nicely, with the Under-20s Six Nations game kicking off at 6pm GMT and their Pro12 match being an 8pm kick-off. However, torrential rain has led to quite frankly awful conditions in Viterbo, meaning the start in the earlier game was held up by 45 minutes. I'm not sure how Scrum V filled a whole hour without any live rugby, but they decided to stick with the Under-20s game until it conclusion - at half-time they were speculating whether the 60 minutes rule could be invoked given the conditions, but it went the distance.

Only the Pro12 game has been scheduled to be on the Red Button tonight, so that is being broadcast on BBCi in full with the main BBC Two Wales coverage joining the Ospreys game about 20 minutes in upon the conclusion in Italy. No RedZone commentary tonight (and obviously no Red Button commentaries on the earlier game owing to it not being on BBCi), just a Welsh language service as an alternative to the main feed.

They managed to butcher both the main webfeed and the Red Button broadcast during the overlap. The Under-20s webfeed cut away to Swansea at 8pm, before going to a technical fault testcard for a few minutes. Upon this being rectified, the Red Button/alternative webfeed for the Ospreys game duly cut to Italy and went into a temporary fault of its own for a few minutes before getting fixed. The Under-20s feed then went down for another few minutes but they eventually sorted them both out. Goodness only knows what happened on BBC Two Wales at this time.

Yes, Hugh Porter was an absolutely superb commentator - especially as you say for casual viewers.

But he was making a huge number of mistakes towards the end. During the Olympic Men's Road Time Trial he made about 5 mistakes within a 10 minute period (I posted about it at the time) - he was simply incapable of reading the timing clock and knowing which clock / time was referring to which rider.

He is 73 now and there is no way he could have done another 4 years to the next Olympics so now had to be the right time to call it a day.

But still a very sad loss to broadcasting.

As Jill is/was in Minsk and as she is hosting the snooker on ITV4 from 6am on Monday, I wonder if she will be absent from this weekends six nations

Agree with all of that - admittedly he wasn't helped out in the Olympics by some shocking host broadcasting, but there were still mistakes of his own doing

He did make some glaring errors though. I have noticed as well that there have been some re-dubs on the official Olympics DVD. Most noticeably on the Pendleton gold when Porter had claimed that " no one will catch Anna Meares" as they were coming up to the line. (Meares was about 5th.)

Will post full details for BBC & RTE later but Andrew Cotter was commentating with Jonathan Davies for the first 5 minutes on the Italy v Wales match then Cotter had to leave as he is feeling unwell and left Jonathan Davies commentating himself.

Update from 10 minutes: Davies is now commentating with Shane Williams

All rather unfortunate and whilst I am not a fan of Andrew Cotter's commentary I wish him a speedy recovery.

It also means that we have two Welshman commentating on this game and unfortunately you would think that Wales are 50-0 up rather than 9-6! Shame.

I assume Alastair Eykyn, Conor McNamara or Eddie Butler would do it instead as they have a day to sort it out.

I like Andrew Cotter and think he is brilliant but I didn't really like him when he first started out in 2004 but now I think he is one of the best.

I see what you mean with the biased Welsh Commentary but all things considered I think they are doing well and Jonathan Davies wasn't as annoying as lead commentator on a welsh match than co-commentator on a welsh match

For the record Huw Llywelyn Davies is now commentating with Jonathan Davies in the 2nd half
