Sunday 5th January - BBC One

Super Bowl XLVI Live: New England Patriots v New York Giants

Mark Chapman presented from Salford alongside Mike Carlson and Danny Amendola

Commentators: Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth, with Michele Tafoya at pitchside (as NBC)

Red button commentators: Darren Fletcher, Greg Brady and Rocky Boiman (as BBC Radio 5 Live & 5 Live Sports Extra; only available in the second half on Freeview)

BBC One took the trophy presentation from NBC with Dan Patrick although while they were taking their break upon the final whistle they took what I presume was NFL Network/world feed pictures for a few minutes. During one of the commercial breaks on NBC, we heard some off-air preparation from Al and Cris as the Beeb stuck with live game pictures. They also used video clips from interviews conducted by Radio 5 Live's Darren Fletcher on media day during the breaks in the game.

Hate to be negative but Mark Chapman was a truly dreadful choice of anchorman by the BBC. He seemed to be more interested in what people thought of his jumper, viewer's tweets, other people's Super Bowl parties and the size of the players than he was in the actual game. I didn't realise he was going to be quite as bad as he was: I've not seen/heard much of his work on Final Score or Radio 5 Live's football coverage and this has given me good reason not to change that any time soon.

It made me realise how good Jake Humphrey has been in past years, who while not an expert clearly does his homework and at least makes an effort to sound interested in his pundits. They might not be famous Radio 1 DJs, but BBC TV would have been better served to opt for Matt Roberts (who presented their highlights shows from the first three rounds of the Playoffs) or Nat Coombs (ex-NFL on Five host who now presents 5 Live Sports Extra's coverage) instead of Chapman if Jake wasn't available.

Ah - good to see Sid's back. Surprised he didn't get the big game of the night, but perhaps they're just easing him back in slowly.

Yeah, fantastic for the commentary legend that is Sid Waddell to be back. The dream team are finally re-united (Sid and John Gwynne). I can't believe Sky persist with giving Wayne Mardle the big games. He is so average and with a full-strength commentary line-up now, surely the big games should be shared among the others as well. Their darts team really is excellent but I'd love to see Stuart Pyke used on more of the big games along with Gwynne, Waddell, Rod Studd and Rod Harrington.

Premier League Darts- Week Two- Sky Sports HD1

Dave Clark presented from Aberdeen with Rod Harrington and Wayne Mardle

Lewis v Van Barneveld : John Gwynne & Wayne Mardle
Anderson v Hamilton : Rod Studd & Rod Harrington
Taylor v Painter : Rod Studd & Wayne Mardle
Whitlock v Wade : John Gwynne & Rod Harrington

The commentary team were quite stretched tonight, I thought, with everyone doing two matches. Does anyone know where Stuart Pyke and Nigel Pearson are? I thought they'd be back this week.

Where was Sid Waddell? Is he just doing a few weeks of the PL Darts as he is still recovering?

I think so. He's still undergoing treatment and I think he will have an irregular and quite minimal role for the moment. Last week's appearance was a once-off and Sid has said on Twitter that he won't be commentating on the Premier League Darts for a while. It's such a shame, he really does brighten up a bad match and makes the whole thing worth listening to. I think the commentary team is so strong that it will still be great but I wish John Gwynne and Rod Studd would be used together on the really big games rather than Mardle.

Also, I've now checked Twitter and Stuart Pyke was supposed to be commentating last night but he swapped with John Gwynne. I can't see why both weren't used.

Mardle is good in the studio i find but a buffoon in the comm-box. For me Nigel Pearson is far underrated & underused. I Think he is top notch.

Agreed. Mardle can bring up some interesting and insightful points in the studio but as a co-commentator, he tries too hard and becomes quite annoying.

It's even worse that he is used on big games rather than Nigel Pearson and one of my favourites, the excellent Stuart Pyke.

Why pay two salaries when you can pay one ?

You only need the 4 names listed above to do it on a PL night. Its only 2 hours work each max. Dont need anymore really.

Yeah, from Sky's point of view, it makes sense but as a viewer, I like versatility and I'd like to hear Stuart Pyke and Nigel Pearson rather than the annoying Mardle as co-commentator.

Pearson also works for Talksport and Pyke for 5 Live Sports Extra. Mardle and Rodney just work for Sky so love them or loathe them you better get used to them.

Wayne Mardle is to darts co-commentary what Chris Coleman is to football co-commentary. Both are far better at punditry too, which shows what different skills they are. Too many broadcasters just assume somebody who is good at one job will automatically be good at the other. Sometimes they are, but more often they're not.

You might want to change this one to Sri Lanka before the editing time limit passes.

Great to hear that Barry Richards was back in the box; I assumed he'd retired I haven't heard him for at least a couple of years now on any SA games!!! Anyone know why he had such a prolonged absence?

Darn. Didn't see that.

I too assumed Richards had retired from commentary - in fact I believe this is the first time he has shown up on my Sky posts of cricket commentators since they started in 2009 - though Wikipedia says he quit Supersport after a dispute. Fair chance he might turn up on the Channel Five highlights this summer then as he is still England based during the summer.
