A change from last year when Petchey did Murray's semi-final. I like Petchey, he's understated but knows his stuff and also gets excited when he needs to.

I'm not a major fan of Andrew Castle, and would prefer the big matches to be covered by Petchey, Nick Mullins, Simon Reed and David Mercer. However having said that I'm not sure why people are so hostile towards him. He's a perfectly decent commentator. Is he particularly objectionable? I'd be interested to get to the bottom of why people dislike his commentary?

I could use many words to describe Petchys commentary style, but understated certainly wouldn't be one of them. I don't mind him but I find him pure hyperbole during matches.

E.g his standard delivery of..

OHHH HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A POINT LIKE THAT

Everythings also the best ever with him. The best since when? The last match you commentated on Mark?

For me Castle has become too 'showbiz' since his GMTV days. He has developed a mid Atlantic twang and is constantly trying to the main man. The lead commentator should lead the way and let the other/others add the colour, he wants to do both. Leave the punditry to Mac etc and just concentrate on the facts.

I cant comment too much on what Castle is like now as i end up pressing the mute button, but in the past i have found that is too smug and arrogant. He talks way too much with most of it being repetitive and obvious, as has been explained already. Also the way in which he talks down on the viewer is just insulting, its as if the people watching dont know the rules of tennis.

I can remember back in 2009 when Murray played Roddick he went on to say something like ''Roddick will now start with one serve. After that Murray will have two serves, then Roddick again two, and it will go on like that until the tiebreak is over.'' What is next to come from him? Will it be something along the lines of ''Tennis is a game played by two people, who stand each at one side of the net. Their main target is to hit a ball over the net and within the chalked lines with their racket, which they hold in their hand. The racket can be held in any of the two hands, this is up to the players to decide.
To be sure the games goes about in good order, there will always have been appointed a referee, who sits in a really high chair next to the net, as well as number of line judges, who in their turn are in a constant bending posture, to make sure they can see whether a ball is in or out.
This game called tennis is won by the player who is the first to win three sets.''

Castle was useless tennis player in his day, was useless on GMTV, useless on Strictly Come dancing and is now a useless tennis commentator.

Whilst I understand your frustration. There are many people who just watch Wimbledon and tennis for them simply doesn't exist for the other 50 weeks of the year. It's not too much to expect them to have forgotten some of the rules within a year.

Others, Like my 13 y/o sister, haven't got a clue in the first place and such comments (like the tie break example provided) are extremely helpful.

You can see McEnroe commentating in the bottom left of the screen for the Djokovic vs Del Potro match. Presumably for ESPN?

Yep its for ESPN as Chris Fowler is on lead comms.

On a shot of Big Ben, Andrew Castle's commentary was 'the London Eye on the right there...'

Very insightful comment, highlighting a relatively unknown London landmark.

I agree with the Andrew Castle criticism about explaining simple things - he goes too far for me. I understand that there will be casual viewers and occasionally some technical things may need to be explained but you have to find a middle road.

No Wayne Grady?

Although Nobilo is excellent.

Charles Sale says: 'BBC Sport have gone with exactly the same line-ups as last year for their commentary teams for the singles finals.

Mark Petchey will be calling the women’s game alongside John McEnroe and Lindsay Davenport, while Andrew Castle, Boris Becker and Tim Henman will be in the booth for the men’s showpiece.'

Surprised at the lack of Wayne Grady but I agree with Hayden about Frank Nobilo.

Liking the addition of the gorgeous Naga too

No surprises there. I guess John McEnroe can't do the men's final because of other committments.

It's sad, because I find Becker and Henman to be the least insightful and least interesting of the BBC's pundits. Becker is a real personality and was a great player, but he's not a good commentator, he states the obvious. Henman is blandness personified.

Maybe so, but the match which i was referring to had 2 tiebreaks, and when the 2nd tiebreak was about to start he still felt the need to explain it. And this was only 1 match, i would imagine that every match that he commentates on that goes to a tiebreak is the same.

He also needs to realise that the crowd on 'Henman Hill' CAN'T hear him.

Tour de France, ITV4

Gary Imlach presenting live coverage and highlights with Chris Boardman

Commentators: Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen

Reporters: Ned Boulting and Matt Rendell

So it's the usual ITV TdF coverage team that we have seen and heard over a good number of years now. During the evening highlights programmes, I have enjoyed Chris and Ned's featured reports from the University of Southampton about the aerodynamics of the riders' silhouettes, kit and bikes and the adjustments that can be made to them. This kind of informative feature adds a lot to their coverage.

I must admit i don't watch too much of the cycling but Paul Sherwen ( for a supposed co comm ) does do a lot more than many doesn't he ? I have to admit, rather embarassingly, that I thought it was Chris Boardman

He does, it's a bit of an odd setup they have for the world feed. At various points Phil Liggett will cut off to do promos/links and specific commentary for the American coverage and Paul Sherwen will carry on for the rest of the world.

I never knew they did this until the stage where Beloki crashed and Armstrong had to divert across a field in '03 as there was a video clip showing both of them in the box commentating on it at the same time.

Incidentally Paul Sherwen's voice now is almost unrecognisable from when he first started commentating and had a thick Widnes accent!
