Barry Davies is the greatest commentator of my lifetime. I think the guy is wonderful and so versatile. You can understand why other commentators respect him so much. I hope the hockey decision doesn't mean we will only be hearing the great man once a year.
Brilliant commentator, I agree, and should have commentated on more FA Cup and World Cup Finals than he did. His versatility was, in a way, his downfall.

However he's 75 next year. And he's way past his best, understandably so. I would expect next year's Wimbledon to be his last; it's not as if the BBC are short of tennis commentators during that particular fortnight.

BT Sport - Rugby Tonight

Craig Doyle Presenting from the glass pitch with Sarra Elgan, Matt Dawson, Martin Bayfield, Lawrence Dallaglio, Austin Healey and Ben Kay.

Healey was on social media duty and Almost all of the above had a 'turn' at presenting segments. This I presume will be BT's version of the 'rugby club'. I presume most weeks won't feature the whole team. It was a more laid back magazine style and was a good watch. Had the fans in the studio and gave a real demonstration of the new scrum laws. It was fresh and different. Personnel wise, Matt Dawson isn't my cup of tea but I can live with him, only real weak link for me is Sarra Elgan. She was a weak link on ESPN and for me fumbles and doesn't ask very good questions. Personal opinon. Craig Doyle for me is hands down better than Alex Payne. I'd say James Gemmell actually is better than Payne. That's a different talking point though!

Toulouse v Racing Metro

Martin Bayfield
staying around to present with Lawrence Dallaglio and Austin Healey

Comms: Martin Gillingham and Peter Richards (who was in the studio between 6 & 7pm speaking to Darrell Currie on BT Sport Live)

I like Craig Doyle, but I thought Alex Payne was outstanding on Sky Sports' coverage of the British & Irish Lions tour. Quite a low key host but he suited the role very well, he didn't attempt to make himself the centre of attention and got the best out of some excellent pundits. I actually rate all three of the presenters you mention very highly, rugby union has a number of good live match presenters with Ross Harries, Stephen Watson and formerly Gareth Lewis all very good on the BBC nations' coverage of the Pro12.

Friday 6th September - BBC Two Wales

Scrum V Live: Scarlets v Leinster

Ross Harries presenting from Parc y Sgarlets alongside Martyn Williams, with Sean Holley in the analysis truck

Commentators: Gareth Charles and Jonathan Davies

Reporter: Phil Steele

It sounds as if there is no longer going to be any Red Button alternative commentaries on Scrum V Live. Instead Rick O'Shea, Robert Jones and Paul Williams are doing their RedZone commentary on tonight's game on BBC Radio Wales (in this case they're only doing second half commentary on the radio, with coverage of the first half going out online, this being due to the Macedonia v Wales international football).

BBC Red Button

Pro12 Live: Newport Gwent Dragons v Ulster

Commentator: Jim Neilly (on his own)

I know you won't agree but for me this is great news. As long as we don't get only Welsh language in future weeks.

Nick Mullins is with Austin Healy and Lawrence Dallaglio at Kingston Park. I didn't catch any of the opening presentation.

My fear is that they begin to prioritise putting Ulster Rugby Live on the Red Button ahead of Scrum V Live.

I'm hoping RedZone will occasionally be on the Red Button when Scrum V Live is and there is the capacity to do so, especially if we then get the option of that or the main feed which I'm sure would please most non-Welsh speaking viewers. I believe the Dragons v Ulster game has taken priority tonight because it's not on BBC Two Northern Ireland.

Channel 4 Announce NFL Line Up ( from Sport On The Box )

Ahead of the start of the new NFL season this weekend, Channel 4 has announced its presenting line-up as the station becomes the new terrestrial home of the sport.

Long-time fan and amateur player for the London Warriors, Vernon Kay will host ‘The American Football Show’, Channel 4′s new regular Saturday morning highlights show which will be broadcast each week at 9.00am.

Colin Murray, who hosted American Football coverage for Channel 5 and currently presents a weekday mid-morning show for talkSPORT, will anchor Channel 4′s live coverage of the two live Wembley games on September 29 and October 27.

Live coverage of NFL’s Sunday Night Football game, which begins this week with the New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys, will again be hosted by the popular duo of Nat Coombs and Mike Carlson – who hosted the show on Channel 4 last season.

Channel 4 will be the home of the NFL and the Super Bowl on terrestrial television in the UK for at least the next two years, taking over from the BBC.

They will show live coverage of the NFL’s annual games at Wembley Stadium – beginning with the two games scheduled in 2013 – as well as a weekly highlights show, on top of its existing live coverage of Sunday night matches.

Announcing the new line up, Channel 4’s commissioning editor for sports Jamie Aitchison said: “The wealth of NFL programming on 4 allows us to bring viewers a great presenting team across all the shows.

“Vernon, Nat and Colin are all avid fans of the NFL and their different styles alongside great knowledge and enthusiasm means our viewers are in for a treat.

“With Mike Carlson’s superb insight and special guests throughout the season we can’t wait to get going this weekend.”

Multi-award winning sports production company Sunset+Vine will produce all of Channel 4′s NFL programming, including the Super Bowl, live Wembley games, Sunday Night Football games and weekly highlights.

The firm co-produced Channel 4’s BAFTA award-winning Paralympics coverage last year and have also been responsible for Channel 4’s coverage of Sunday Night Football for the past three years, as well as Channel 5’s previous NFL coverage and BBC TV’s weekly play-off highlights.

John Leach, Managing Director, Sunset+Vine, commented: “This fantastic contract plays to our strengths of working together with Channel 4, our long history with the NFL and our knowledge of the sport.

“This experience, together with our success of producing award-winning sports tv programming makes the Channel 4, NFL and Sunset+Vine combination compelling.”

Can I ask why that is "your fear"?

Surely it's better to have a choice of games than have alternative commentary. (Or, as both BBC Wales & NI are available on Sky, is that why it's an issue?)

It's a fear to me because I live in England, follow Welsh rugby, have Freeview rather than Sky or another platform, so can't watch BBC Two Wales through my television, and would like to watch Scrum V Live on my television rather than online. If we get Scrum V Live on the Red Button, then I think they might as well make a choice of audio options available as they have the capacity to do so - if those options are the main TV feed and Radio Wales this season then great. Ideally we'd still have two BBCi channels on Freeview so both Scrum V Live and Ulster Rugby Live could be screened regularly (or at least one does when there is something else taking up the BBCi platform), but as things stand then personally speaking I'd prefer Scrum V Live to be typically the one that gets priority as has been the case in previous seasons.

Incidentally I've no problem with the Dragons v Ulster being the Freeview 301 game tonight because it wasn't on either Welsh or Northern Irish television, but if it's a choice of a BBC Two Wales match and a BBC Two Northern Ireland match then I'd hope they'd go with the former more often than not.

I read that it is his last commentary day today, is that true and if so what is he doing, retiring?

Ah that would explain why other Jim McGrath and Graham Cunningham said good luck to him

I think he is maybe standing down from course commentary not retiring altogether

They don't always do all the game on a weekend. Next week there are 4 matches so Rod Studd and/or Bull Arthur will be doing one too.

Tonight's game is a meaningless encounter really

Don't know why they couldn't have done a late switch and took the Catalans game, that meant something.

Probably a few factors

1 - it was on French TV so kicked off earlier
2 - this game was scheduled a couple of weeks ago so they would have to compensate Bradford I am guessing

Your probably right on both counts, total waste of time though, the Bulls Giants game being televised.
Would be interesting to see the Sky viewing figures!

Treviso v Ospreys (RaboDirect Pro 12 RU)

S4C - Gareth Roberts was studio host, with Gareth Davies and Brynmor Williams, with on site commentary from Huw Llewellyn Davies and Dr. Gwyn Jones. Also on site were Cennydd Davies and Derwyn Jones.

I liked how the stereotype of random camera shots of forwards mid ruck were used by the Italian TV director.
