I recently made a few complaints about Strictly Come Dancing.I received a reply from the BBC yesterday to be told, would you believe, that Strictly Come Dancing is NOT a dancing competition but an entertainment show.If it is just an entertainment show what is the point of the judges and these same judges passing comment & marking the dancers. Also in the same email from the BBC they pertained that they do not imply that the Sunday is live & that they state that it is recorded on Saturday,so why do Tess,Claudia & the judges always comment on the results show about what happened yesterday. I was completely dumbfounded by these perceptions by the BBC and would like to know if anybody else agrees with me.

The public in front of the telly are watching the results show on Sunday. The hosts and judges don't talk about yesterday, but always about Saturday. Which is technically correct. I'm not sure why this is such an issue with some posters on this board.

SCD is live on a Saturday, and the results are shown on a Sunday. Fact.

What about a public inquiry?

So where have you been since series one? The debate on whether it's a dancing show or an entertainment show was settled long ago - it's an entertainment dancing show, as opposed to an entertainment variety show, an entertainment musical show or any other type of entertainment show.

A purely dancing show wouldn't bring in sufficient viewers to warrant the expense or the prime-time slot on Saturday evenings. It would be a low key affair scheduled for late weekday evenings.

It doesn't matter what you want it to be - it's what appeals to the masses. Entertainment with a bit of glamour and competition plus viewer voting seems to be what gets the ratings, so that's what you get.

Presumably the poster will be complaining about all the "Christmas" programmes and "New Year" programmes that are recorded in advance - don't Songs of Praise record the Christmas and Easter editions at the same church on consecutive days?

And the biggest shock of all HM does not do the Queen's Speech on Christmas Day, I think she should definitely be fined by OFCOM for that.

Hear, Hear, the people sitting at home pay their wages and pensions but these characters cannot be bothered putting on a live saturday result show, it is the peoples money not theirs, 90 per cent if not more of strictly viewers hate the sunday show, but do the bbc bigwigs listen to their employers, heck as like!

You're new, so I doubt that you've seen the posts from many of us who say it isn't a "proper dance" competition, but a family entertainment show tailored to compete with the X-Factor.

It's pointless writing to the BBC about anything as you just get a tailored "stock answer" saying; "thankyou for your letter but they're right and you're wrong."
There's too many letters received to be able to afford licence money pay for individual replies.

Did they say they'd add your complaint to the log?

They burn them at Christmas, cuts down heating costs of TV Centre when most employees are away.

You think she is still sober at 3 o'clock!

A friend who worked at TV Centre (many years ago) used to say that it was amazing that any programmes ever got out after the Speech as the drink had been flowing liberally. One year (in the days of films being on film) they put the reels of one film on in the wrong order.

Indeed it is an entertainment show. There was a time - I think it was when Chris Hollins won - when I was unhappy about that because I thought Ricky Whittle was a better dancer. But in the meantime I understand that the entertainment value is at least as important as any dancing content when I found myself drawn to Chelsee / Pasha from the beginning purely because I liked them as people. Entertainment is different things to different people - some may find expertise in dancing more entertaining but for me the whole package is important.
And the judges - well they also provide their element of entertainment (eso. Craig and Bruno..) - and it's all tongue in cheek anyway - isn't it?

Many people still see the years of "Come Dancing" through rose coloured glasses.

This decidedly "middle class" programme (in the eyes of the BBC) began to lose viewers and it's demise was accelerated by the BBC as they continually kicked it around the schedules until it rolled over and died.
There's no chance of SCD reverting to any resemblance of that competition or a similar one commissioned, they think it wouldn't attract enough viewers. Shame for "Home Counties East."
