well from the beatles john lennon and paul mccartney had success. now with destiny's child it was beyonce and kelly rowland the ones with the success. but kelly's success in nowhere near beyonce's. but i know the amount of records they sold aren't near the records the beatles sold its the talent wise. the girl groups like tlc, en vogue, spice girls and others didn't have a breakout star really so that's why i kind of picture just destiny's child as the successful one and maybe the female version of the beatles.

I personally thought you had peaked with the "is Mary J Blige the black Cher" thread, but you have topped it
I can't wait for the "is Justin Bieber the pop version Kurt Cobain' thread"

You've got to be joking. No band, male or female, comes anywhere near The Beatles.

I don't think they have enough "classics" to even be considered remotely iconic...

Who?
Aren't you supposed to have heard of a band that would be as iconic as the Beatles? |

In their later years the Beatles played with a keyboard player called Billy Preston and so ended up being a bunch of white guys playing with a coloured bloke. Thinking of that I would suggest a better comparison would be Eternal.
The Beatles are at a level where the only guys the could be legitimately compared to are the likes of the Stones, Beach Boys and those sort of innovative and iconic bands. Comparing them to a R&B group that had a couple of hits is like comparing the Concorde with a polystyrene glider. |

George and Ringo had success in their solo careers too, not just John and Paul.

The Spice Girls. Being the most successful girl band ever, then they come closest(in terms of success, not musically I hasten to add). Destinys child are actually the second most succesful girl band.

I really don't think they are. What about Diana Ross & the Supremes and TLC?
It is ridiculous though to suggest that Destinys Child are the female version of the Beatles. 48 years after She loves you hit the UK charts it's still played & sung by people along with most other Beatles songs. Do you honestly think anyone will play Destinys Child songs in 48 years time...i doubt it. |

Diana Ross & The Supremes had far more success in the US thn the UK. Stateside they had 5 consecutive #1 hits in the mid 60's, so i guess it depends where you are talking about.

The Supremes were the closest contemporary group to the Beatles in the 60's in terms of a female counterpart.
In terms of a group since then with that Beatlesque global mania, the hype, the merchandise, the iconic look, the movies, breaking America etc, the Spice Girls are the closest thing we've seen. Although there music will never be seriously compared to that of the Beatles, in terms of global commercial success people have been making the Beatles comparisons since 1996. Destiny's Child were more like a Supremes 2.0 with a dash of TLC. With Beyonce being the Diana Ross of the group... |

Going OT here for a moment.
TLC were far better than Destiny's Child. CrazySexyCool is one of the finest albums of the '90s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Jt9IZJ9unM |

Destiny's Child's meteoric progression from simple rhythmic R&B influenced pop to pioneering psychedelia, sprawling multipart songs built around a singular premise, to the fractured beauty of their famous untitled double-album and - oh wait. They were the ones that sang about female independence while shaking their arses in skimpy costumes, right?

When one of Destiny's Child gets to do the voiceover for Thomas the Tank Engine, then maybe we can talk about them being in the same league as the Beatles.
