Would Little Mix have got to the final without the 'weight sob story'?

As far as I remember, there were very few comments about her weight prior to it being mentioned on the show. I think they were more about her general appearance ('slothgirl'), which is in itself incredibly cruel, but I can't help but blame the show for the slew of nasty comments about her weight.

Did the story get them to the final? Not a clue, although I think the image they were being pushed with was more influential.
Did it win them votes? Yes (not least from a lot of people I know.)

The producers probably figured that mentioning the "slothgirl" and fruby comments on tv would be too much so they mentioned the weight ones because its a more relatable type of thing for the viewers.

The way I see it is that anyone who seeks a career in showbiz needs to develop a thick skin as they are bound to get rude comments from the public - that's something that comes with fame - especially for female stars. Think of all the nasty comments about Cheryl/Tulisa Kelly on this forum alone and all the nasty rumours about Beyonce's pregnancy - it goes with the territority and the sensible thing would be for X Factor contestants just to ignore it. I suspect the Jesy story struck a chord because there a lot of teenage girls who identify with her - they are perfectly normal but feel fat/ugly because of the ridiculous standards imposed on them by the media. My opinion is that having her crying on the telly was a masterstroke which I have no doubt gained the group a lot of votes ...

It didn't work for Gazza...

P.S. I don't think I saw the crying. There's so much shite manipulation on TXF that I tend to record it and skip all but the performances and the judges' comments. Of course, that's just me, but my favourites all the way through were Amelia (before she came left and after she came back), Little Mix and Kitty.

Not to mention the way she was turned into the "victim" LOL!

I don't really think your opinion is going to change his, somehow.
