because it feels like she's done pop in her last two albums. she hardly has r&b in her music really.

I think she's urban pop, but she keeps crossing over to pop, so I wouldn't blame anyone for labelling her as a POP artist...

She calls herself a popstar. So pop.
Almost all her singles are dance-pop or midtempto pop ballads. |

She never really did reggae, she did reggae influenced r'n'b' and pop for her first album and she's been doing urban pop ever since with the some island flavour in the odd song.Hardly a reggae artist...Besides, 'Pon De Replay' was a big hit, so it's not like nobody cared.

She's a mix of both personally but is shying away from R&B more.

Can't we just call it pop music like we used to? You don't have to stick another word to it all the time like urban or dance or r&b. She is obviously pop.
Of all the crappy chart music we have to put up with these days Rihanna is someone I don't actually mind. She's not very talented herself but the vast team she's got behind her doing most of the work at least come up with some decent, catchy pop songs. She's a decent pop star in that respect, especially compared to most of the crap around at the moment. |

and the second single flopped. It pretty much was reggae. and I meant critically. The critics weren't very complimentary, even though her debut wasn't that bad.
Besides, it's mostly due to a lack of promotion and bad management. It did moderately well I think As far as the critical reception is concerned, it was her 1st album and she was a very young act with no specific musical direction so she wasn't going to get heavily praised obviously, but if she had taken that sound a bit further, she might have got better reviews. The reggae-influenced songs she did with Sean Paul for her AGLM album entered the US top 10 with no promotion and no video, so she was doing rather well with that sound too, but her management chose a more mainstream and safe path, which is not a bad thing, since she managed to pull it off I guess

She's a pop artist that does an RnB song occasionally.
From her last album, Only Girl, S&M and California King Bed are all pop songs. Only What's My Name? is an RnB song, so I'd classify her as a pop artist. I know this is controversial, but I'm sure her skin colour has a lot to do with her being classified as an RnB artist sometimes. I mean, Britney Spears, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Nelly Furtado, etc. did RnB or hip hop songs occasionally, and they were never considered RnB artists. |

Pop, with some Urban/R'n'B influences, and occasional Reggae influences.
But really, she's a Popstar. |

I'd describe her as urban pop (along with the likes of Alesha Dixon, Cheryl Cole, Beyonce etc). Definitely more pop than R&B anyway.

I wouldn't call Cheryl Cole any form of urban, r n b etc-she ain't got no soul in that flat and out of tune mess that passes as singing. |

Her first two albums could be classed as contemporary R&B, but pretty much everything from 'Good Girl Gone Bad' onwards has been pop save the odd R&B song here and there.

whitney houston was really pop when she came in and in her ballads it was soul music. she was pop/soul. she was r&b when she released im your baby tonight and since then she was really r&b but still put in pop in her songs though.
beyonce is r&b but was went pop with i am sasha fierce but her current album is hardcore r&b imo. |
