That could be partially attributable to The Smugglers.
Well, the Drahvins were mentioned in 'The Pandorica Opens', and they had an episode returned, so maybe the mention of Avery's treasure in 'The Smugglers' and the character actually appearing in 'The Curse of the Black Spot' could have a similar effect next year!

Didn't work out for the Macra in 'Gridlock', sadly there's no such thing as Macra. Macra do not exist!

Do any fans think "The Underwater Menace" is under-appreciated, especially in the 1998 poll for "DWM"?
After all, what remains is more eventful and watchable than what is left of "The Space Pirates", surely?

"The Power Of The Daleks" should have been preserved, no matter what, for being the debut story for Troughton!
Underwater Menace is very unappreciated, largely due to part 3 and the usual hack fan reaction to Josef Furst.

Imagine if all 6 episodes of "The Space Pirates" had survived?
If this were the case, would it not be more painful to watch?
The recon and the audio indicate it is not the greatest story. Probably 3 episodes too long. However anything with Dudley Foster in is worth watching.

I would be delighted to be able to see it. I am told we watched Dr Who religiously but I have no memory of it. My earliest Who memory is a far better proposition, Silurians.

The earliest Who I can vaguely recall watching first time round is Planet Of The Spiders, although I've seen most (if not all) of the stories from the first three Doctors that survived intact on various re-runs over the years.

Is anybody else hoping that recently deceased leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Il had a secret stash of the now 106 missing episodes. I'd be willing to forgive his son any potential nuclear war if he was to return these to the BBC

Let's see. A megalomaniac that feasted on caviar, smoked Cuban cigars and drank expensive alcohol while his people starved, possibly having something hidden away . . . I can't see it. The Jong family was always so open!

But hey, two episodes found is better than them being lost forever so we should be grateful for that.
Any recoveries are good news and it brings new hope.... cheers daveboy!

Sadly unlikely. He was more of a James Bond fan by all accounts, presumably imagining himself as the chief villian and constantly frustrated that they always lost

Always getting my dictators mixed up!!!
Maybe the need for control of people shown by messrs Mugabe and KJI is tempered by them being massive DW fans and really wanting to be respected throughout the universe as the Doctor is!!

Well, season one including 'Marco Polo' and 'The Reign of Terror' were sold to Rhodesia in 1966.

But there's no such thing as Rhodesia. Rhodesia does not exist!

Just found out about these two more old Who episodes found. Considering these are the first to be recovered in eight year, this is most excellent news.

Coincidentally, I just finished watching The Underwater Menace yesterday. A year or two back, I embarked on the mammoth task of watching all the old episodes from the beginning.

I'd agree that Galaxy 4 was pretty uneven with some pretty painful to watch sounds and visuals in part. But I quite enjoyed The Underwater Menace - both the story and characters.

It also doesn't hurt that episode 3 was the first chance to see Houghton in something other than a reconstruction. It will be nice to have the second ep and I'll gladly watch the G4 one too.

Early days, but anyone have any thought on how we’ll get to see these two recovered episodes eventually?

We’ve already had the Lost in Time box. Don’t know that these two eps on their own would make much of a DVD release or that they’d tack them on as bonus material for another release.

Digital download would be great, does BBC do this sort of thing?

I have had a dim and distant recollection: when The time Meddler DVD was released, there was a plan to have a reconstructed Galaxy Four attached to it, but that plan was abandoned.

Could it be that the return of Galaxy Four has been bubbling along for two or three years now, since The Time Meddler was released?

Oddly the most likely place is actually Iran. Theres always been strong rumours that quite a few episodes could be there. Shame current tensions between Iran and the UK prevent further exploration in that region.

I've heard both those stories.

No, the only record of sales to Iran of Doctor Who the BBC have is the first two episodes of Marco Polo, which were sent on from New Zealand in October 1967; they didn't buy any others and Doctor Who was never shown there.

I suspect that the story that it just wasn't considered good enough is true - Galaxy 4 was, after all, one of the stories with very little visual material available and these always make the worst recons.

The other alternative is that several Doctor Who fans were able to successfully keep quite a big secret for more than two years...

The book Wiped! Doctor Who's Missing Episodes by Richard Molesworth says records indicate the only stories bought by Iran are all stories from series 1 and 2 that all exist now. Copies of the first two episodes of Marco Polo were sent to Iran from New Zealand in October 1967 for unclear reasons, the then National Iranian Radio and Television service did not buy the story according to BBC records. BBC enterprises asked the station in 1984 if it had any episodes of Doctor Who and recieved the near legendary reply: "In the name of Allah, what are you talking about?"

Love it! Can we make this the official forums quote to be used when we don't agree with someone?

I would of so love to have got a Fury from the Deep episode than the one they found. The final ep of DMP would of been a great find.

I second that!

The only thing funnier would have been if the answer back from Iran would have been the then equally plausible "In the name of Allah, death to Doctor Who!"

Reading WIPED at the moment: the book confirms that this was the response from Iran, but also points out that this is a pretty standard form of correspondence in Iran, just as "Yours sincerely" is the West.

It still makes me chuckle to read it, though.
