The Coldplay Appreciation Thread!
Josh Pinder
11-12-2011
I have searched, i have yearned, i have explored....and i cannot find a fuuuucking appreciation thread for this band mwhahaha!

Just seen them on The X Factor tonight and thank heck i did! DAMN what a beautiful (Sweaty!) performance that was....just DAYMN....you never know how much you love their music until WHAM its in your face and you really do learn that....actually after 12 years....i love this band!

My dad has/had the X&Y album from 2005 (Confessions On A Dance Floor, Demon Days, Supernature and X&Y summed up my fave overall year in music really) and loved it but havent played it for ages since my dad passed, exploring new music etc.etc. and nothing pulling me to them until now.

So please Coldplay fans....educate me and teach me....tell me your fave Coldplay live performance moments.....favourite songs, videos.

And would very much appreciate it if you could inform me of fave albums...or rank them according to your taste! I need to learn more about Coldplay

And will sort it out in a new year and add more to my neverending CD collection! And overall how do fans feel about Mylo Xyloto? It has had mixed response across the board but the singles and Charlie Brown i have heard and really like them thus far And love the prples/pinks/greens graffitti for the era too

Share the love!

Oh it always is I'm afraid. Not the busiest section of the forum.

I suggest that you buy all of their albums and decide which one you like the most. I think that Mylo Xyloto has had a mixed reaction because fans have branded them "sell-outs" as their music has gone slightly more down the pop route, but I personally think that the album is fantastic and a great listen. I don't concern myself with "sell-outs" and etc, I just enjoy.

Of the older albums my favourite would have to be 'A Rush of Blood to the Head', as seems to be the case with many fans, because I just love the sound and I think that there are some amazing songs there.
So for me I'd say:
1) Mylo Xyloto
2) A Rush of Blood
3) X & Y
4) Viva La Vida
5) Parachutes - although admittedly I haven't listened too much to that one.

The X Factor performance was excellent of course, but I think that even better than that is the one that they performed on 'Children In Need Rocks Manchester'.

(They also performed Every Tear and Viva La Vida, just follow links on side)..

I really like their latest song Paradise (and Viva La Vida). Are the other songs similar style/genre?

On Mylo Xyloto yes. Fantastic songs, Paradise among the best.

I think i will....and yes i saw it but rewatching their performance with a newly found interest is amazing! I dunno why but i always categorised them really....but their performances are so powerful has to be said.

I think i may start reverse order....i love most of their hits when they are on the radio and i like the direction they have gone in for Mylo Xyloto.

Reminds me a lot of indie acts this year like Friendly Fires, Foster The People with their masterstroke work this year. A kinda Pop vibe but Indie Electro too....So yeah i will

Coldplay release classic singles from every album. I have already listed Yellow and Fix You as being among my 20 fave songs of the last decade. Others include Clocks and Violet Hill. I even had A Rush of Blood to the Head () in which I thought Paradise would be among my top 3 songs of 2011 but it will follow the other 4 and be one of my top 10 songs of the year.

I'm going to see them in June and I am so so so so excited!

Albums in order of preference would have to be:

1. Parachutes (my favourite album of all time)
2. A Rush of Blood
3. Mylo Xyloto
4. Viva la Vida
5. X & Y

If you're a new(ish) fan of Coldplay then the earlier albums may not appeal to as much as they're less energetic, but IMO all of the songs on the Parachutes album are amazing, despite being more mellow. They are beautiful songs.

Of everyone who featured within my top 20 singles of 2012, Coldplay are the best established act. They have featured in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011 and now 2012! I listened to all 6 previous songs when I logged onto DS this afternoon. The 7 songs in question are:

Yellow
In My Place
Clocks
Fix You
Violet Hill
Paradise
Princess of China

After seeing them on X Factor I fell in love with them. I am keen to listen to all of their albums I recently got Parachutes and Mylo Xyloto. I was annoyed because for Fathers day I gave my Dad X+Y and A Rush of Blood and now I am gutted.

Can't name a favourite, but I would love to experience them live one day.

I have all of their albums and consider them to be just about the best band around today.

Anybody think there music is a bit mainstream these days? Especially duets with Rihanna?

What makes them special is that they're one of those acts who deliver on their b-sides. I Ran Away is an amazing song.

Big Coldplay fan here. Ghost Stories is sounding excellent so far although like most good albums, it will take some more time to really gel with me. Anyone else picked it up?

Always thought Mylo Xyloto would be a hard act to follow - it was simply brilliant but looks like the new one might be just as good. Unsurprising though, Coldplay are so consistent.

A Rush of Blood to the Head may have overly-aped Radiohead's pre-Kid A sound, but it is supported by some fine, complete songs. Parachutes was a bit gentle and lightweight for an enduring listen, IMO. More recent albums make me wish Chris Martin would actually do more than write half a song and then go swimming. He has talked (don't ask me where!) about "hiding in the lights". I think he also hides in reverb and in wordless vocal expressions. This has been to the detriment of his songwriting since the Rush of Blood era.
