Hello all, can I have some advice please?

I have a flat screen TV, (think it's LCD rather than LED) It's a few years old, so out of warrenty, made by Philips.

I have had a problem which for months I have been ignoring but I can't really pretend it doesn't bother me for much longer. (Typically I get concerned after the warrenty ends.... i know I'm an idiot: )

Anyway, the image has been getting darker, I have been adjusting the contrast and brightness and currently the picture is on the highest bright setting and contrast had to be reduced because faces especially take on an unnatural shiny bluish white colouring on the lightest areas. There is also a bluish trace behind images that move across the screen, birds flying across the sky for example look more like comets with a tail.

The other issue is possibly because the settings are so high but I'm not sure. The screen retains an after image, So if I pause the picture, the Sky roundell on the screen is clearly visible after the image is playing. If I put the EPG on screen for any length of time then return to the programmes I can still read the after image from the EPG in front of the programme Channels like BBC news 24/Sky news can be an issue because the presenter doesn't move much and the ticker runs across the bottom, if turn over I can still the outline of the presenter and sometimes the news headline over the programmes I have turned to.

Like the song says I don't know much, but I do know...that,s not good. My question is... Is it cheaper to see if the tv can be repaired or should I accept I've let it go too far and I have think about a new TV?

Frankly, in the current climate I'd rather not buy a new tv unless I have to. How long do you think this TV has if I leave it "untreated" (is there an offence for tv neglect?) Or can it be repaired for less than the cost of a replacement?

All suggestions gratefully received,

It's not TV neglect and it should have lasted longer than that. After awhile the backlights fade so the picture gets darker. In the manual they have an amount of hours they last for before finally going. It is possible to replace them but it's probably not worth it. Try looking online for 'CCFL backlights for Phillips *model number*'.

CCFL failure wouldn't cause the 'after image' effect he mentioned, it almost certainly needs the LCD panel replacing.

Assuming it was the CCFL's, and you could get them, it's not a very easy job anyway - depending on the exact panel type.

Certainly sounds like an LCD panel failure. Do you have the model number? I see a lot with the symptoms you describe on the 37PFL5522 fitted with AUO manufactured panels.

Not an economical repair unfortunatly.
