Hi

Ok here is my dilema, Im looking to buy my 11yr old son who is quite IT literate a cheap android tab for xmas, but there are gazillions to choose from.
My budget is £150 MAX
Im looking for....

10" screen
A Tab which can access the Android market place does 2.2 or 2.3 allow this ?
Pref 16gb but 8gb would suffice
Pref 1ghz cpu
4 way Gyro sensor
WIFI is a must
Not bothered about 3g

Im basically looking for something like this.....

Android 2.2 10.2" Tablet PC Touch SuperPad 3 Flytouch 16GB Epad Apad Youtube =UK | eBay

Im just not sure if it is any good or not as I know little about Tabs or Android

My head just cant handle this I need a beer now.

Any advice would be REALLY appreciated.

Thanks

Paul.

There are two types of screens on tablets, resistive and capacitive. Capacitive is generally considered far superior but it also adds considerably to the cost, probably putting it above your price range. It is an extremely important factor to consider though.

Also, do you need a USB port and/or an SDHC memory card slot?

In case anybody else is looking I would look at getting an advent vega, might be able to pick one used for around £150

The arnova 10 g2 which you can get from hmv for £130 seem to fit most of your requirements.

Does not have android market but there is a way of getting it on.

The gadget show did a review of some of the budget tablets recently
http://fwd.channel5.com/gadget-show/...budget-tablets

Not the most definitive of tests but useful all the same.

Whether one has access to the Android Market is not dependant on the OS, rather the configuration of the OS supplied by the manufacturer; you'll need to look the device up to check it has access to the market.

Android Market filters apps that are not compatible with your device. Therefore the device manufacturer must submit the device to Google for compliance testing to be allowed to include Market. Otherwise the user must find a way to install Market.

Absolutely diabolical, steer clear.

Spec is inconsistent on that advert - its not multi touch, as it has a resistive screen (the disgo website states it as "full touch").

But mainly the issues are CPU - its relatively slow, and the memory - 256 meg internal is going to get tight.

Spend £25 more on an advent vega - screen is the same, but the CPU is considerably faster, more memory, and overall a fantastic device (once you've put on a CFW).

I'm a bit mystified as according to various sources the Advent Vega 10.1" has a capacitive screen. I'm not saying you're wrong and I'm not trying to argue with what you've said, I'm just trying to understand it.

Thanks for the reply I'll go and have a look at the Vega.

Just one question what is CFW? I'm not at all technical so very easily confused!!

I was in the same boat as you, shopping for an 11 year-old. Just wanted something that he could do YouTube, Facebook, Angry Birds, that sort of thing...

I looked at these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2906314992...84.m1497.l2649 - but my problem was, like you, getting any advice from someone who knows about this sort of thing. Most of the feedback was that 'it's going to be rubbish' when what they meant was 'It's not as good as an iPad that costs six times as much'.

Anyway, I thought I'd give it a try. I've been having a little play, getting it all set up before Christmas and, to be honest, it seems pretty good to me.

The resistive screen works fine - It's a bit like using a DS - and the speed, images etc are all more than OK for my needs...

You cant go too far wrong with the advent vega 10.1 its a very good tablet for £200.

For the £150 budget the archos arnova 8 tablet is also good. Its only a 8" device, and doesnt come with android market. However you can install a custom rom that comes with the android market. There are loads of sites on how to do this, as well as youtube videos. Its a very easy process. If you want I can provide links if required.

Very true! However, posts by the irrational Apple haters are just as useless as those by the irrational Apple fanboys.

It is very difficult to nail down accurate facts. Downloading product manuals from manufacturers will tell you their specs and is very useful but they don't tell you the full story.

Check amazon out for user reviews on any1 you buy first. Might not get one on the Advent Vega though as the advent name is owned by Dixon's retail (currys, pc world, pixmania etc) although for a few months it was the second fastest selling tablet in UK after the iPad, until Archos flooded the market with Arnova's.

Interesting device, and if I didn't already have the Vega, I'd be tempted.

But I wish they'd stop touting the 1080P playback capability - the G2 there is probably slower overall than the Vega, and that definitely can't handle any regular 1080P content (it'll just about cope with 720P if you clock it to 1.4gHz).

But Arnova are Archos by another name and they specialize in media playback.

This will handle 1080p no problem.
