How many paper books do you read that are in colour?.
I've got thousands of paper books, I don't think ANY of them are in colour?. Essentially if you're wanting colour, you're not really looking for an ebook reader. |

Yes, don't you need to push out the boat and buy an iPad if you want colour.
I agree with Nigel that there is little point in a colour ereader. |

It would be good for textbooks and comics, also the Internet browsing experience would be alot better.

To be fair it sounds like you need a tablet if that is what you want to do, for people who want to read novels the e ink ereaders are best.
The only real difference between a kindle and a tablet is EInk is in its early stages which ATM means disadvantages such as only black and white and low frame rate which makes it only really good for books. There are however massive advances in this area by Eink called Triton which will bring colour and a fast enough frame rate (15FPS) for better scrolling and the odd video. This means that the next generation of products like the Kindle will be able to view magazines and newspapers in full colour with videos as well as text books and comics. It will be closer to the feature set of the Fire than that of the Eink Kindle which is a good thing for everyone. Eink themself list applications as:

Readers — eReaders, eTextbooks, eNewspapers, eMagazines, eDocuments
Wireless devices — remotes, game controllers
Thermostats and Industrial Displays
Mobile point of sale units (signature pads)
In-store signage
I think once we see kindles at £100 with these screens they will sell extremely well. Quite a good video from IFA 2011 if you havent seen it http://armdevices.net/2011/09/02/lat...k-at-ifa-2011/ |

My ereader is a very small Sony which I like largely because of the small size, if I wanted to surf the net or watch videos I would like something larger which would be a tablet but then by virtue of it's size wouldn't be as useful as the ereader. As you say though a tablet with an e ink screen with fast refresh etc would be very popular. |

My focus is on magazine and manuals - many are in colour. Once colour e-readers become widespread colour will be standard as it will not cost a penny more to publish them. |

Eink has 2 main advantages, easy on the eyes and amazing battery life.
Quite a good video from IFA 2011 if you havent seen it http://armdevices.net/2011/09/02/lat...k-at-ifa-2011/ Only 4096 colours so far but the same power consumption as the b/w Kindle. The demo pages looked good to me. I'm not interested in video on an e-reader but, once these devices are cheap enough I'll be buying all my magazines and papers for it. |

Mainly because it costs a lot more to print in colour so most books are in b/w.

Don't you think you want a bigger screen for those as well as colour? I see there being at least 2 markets. The ereader as now for which portability, readability and battery life are important and the larger colour models which are more like tablets.Quote:

I can't see why a novel would ever be in colour irrespective of the cost. Certainly when colour e ink ereaders come down in cost they will become the norm but I'm not sure there is any great advantage and I can't see most novels being in colour apart from the "jacket".

Why would you want colour for a novel? Novels must be what most people are reading on ereaders.

I want colour for my technical PDFs, newspapers and magazines. It's difficult to read many charts in black and white. I agree, novels can be in black and white as there are no reasons to be in colour. But, ereaders will not be limited to novels. The long battery life is the thing that interests me as well as the superior reading environment compared to a tablet. |

Indeed just make your document in MS word 85x114 mm with no margins (kindle adds margins) and it should work fine.

Ok, scrub that. Just saved it out as pdf in Word at those sizes and works. Looks like I need to lose a few borders and lower the font size.
