It'd be a terrible shame if she didn't leave topless.

Such a shame, will really miss Amy she managed to take over from Donna last year as my favourite companion, with The Girl Who Waited and The Wedding of River Song (River Song didn't get it all from you, sweetie!). I will miss Rory too, I didn't like him to start with, then when I did he died, thankfully he came back and I loved him more and more with each episode.

At least we'll get another half a series of them, although it says "midseries" so it doesn't necessarily mean half way through, we could get less or more .

That said I am excited about a new companion, it will be great to see how Matt Smith works with someone new.

For the first time I'm a bit annoyed with Moffat. We all knew this news was coming, frankly I think most of us kinda expected it to happen at the end of S6 and S7 was just a bonus. I know that set reports will ensure the news leaks months before the episodes air. But still, did we have to be told officially out of the blue like this when we're still months and months away from the series screening and with at least some vague details of what will happen? First decision he's made that I've really disagreed with and it just feels unnecessary.

I'll also freely admit that while it's always interesting to see where Who moves on to I'm going to miss the Ponds terribly. Karen and Arthur have been outstanding in the roles, easily the best companions since the series returned IMO and fabulous actors both. Amy and Rory are also, again IMO, the most realistic characters in many ways that we've seen in new Who and all three just worked brilliantly well with the Doctor. Ah well.... such is life.

Also wonder if either Arthur or Karen (or both) have something big coming up that would have given the game away? Or maybe a new companion is scheduled to shoot in the first block after Christmas and it was better to get this news out there now? Either way it does feel a bit weird somehow, all publicity is good publicity I know but is this really the best run to the Pond-lite Christmas special?

Hasn't this been on the cards for a long while now though? IIRC it was mentioned at the end of last series that the both of them were looking at other ventures to pursue and that their involvement in S7 would be minimal.

I guess this does confirm it though. Still it had to happen someday.

well you've just reminded me they don't know about that, so could well be....

Quite sad but excited too. Will miss Karen and Arthur, but look forward to seeing someone new.

I'm not surprised, but I am saddened. I'm going to miss both of them a lot, not just their characters but the actors who are always so wonderful in interviews. And it's especially sad because Karen's said so publically that once she's gone she's gone, so looks like there'll be no Amy and Rory for the 50th anniversary. I guess we have the Christmas Special to get used to the Eleventh Doctor without Amy & Rory, but it's still not nice news.

The new companion will have a lot to live up to....

I agree with all of that. I find it very surprising that this would just come out of the blue, especially as Karen only mentioned to the press a couple of weeks back about her cameo in the Christmas special. Something as minute as that has been kept under wraps for ages, whereas something so huge as this has come out of the blue!

Filming starts again in February and they shoot roughly in order, so I'm not convinced that would be the reason. Must be something Arthur or Karen are going on to do...

Also, this is front page news on Digitalspy, so are spoiler tags really necessary?

I'll miss Amy and Rory.

I suupose they were only going to hang on to Karen for so long. She'll be off to that there America no doubt.

Thinking about it, I'm more concerned that their departure is going to be 'heartbreaking' than that they're leaving, which really was only a matter of time. If either Amy or Rory are killed off, I will not be happy.

I don't think Mr Bring-Back-Jenny/Raggedy-Man-I-Remember-You/Everyone-Lives will let that happen.

So we're left with the weird looking bloke. Bets on that we'll get Barrowman as the new assistant and the former showrunner will tell Moffat that naked sex scenes is the key.

Not so sure about that, she's said she wants to do stage shows and London is certainly not short on such opportunities (on a related note, come on Karen, do Chicago even if only for a chuckle....).

Oh and on the manner of leaving, I don't mind if it's heartbreaking so long as a) if one dies, both die and b) they go out in a badass style befitting the family Pond

Bit devastated at the loss of my favourite ever companions, but I was expecting this so it's not that much of a shock. There have been indications that we'd soon part ways with Amy and Rory; I just hope their story, which has gradually been coming full circle, is completed in an appropriate way.

Hopefully they'll be given one last full series, and a good finale in which they exit.

I'll miss you, Legs and Nose.

I have only one request. Since you're leaving, can you take Mrs. Robinson with you?
