Thanks for that

I'm not so worried about the 'heartbreaking' bit now - sounds just like normal Moffat rhetoric! And glad to hear we'll be seeing a 'lot' of Amy (and presumably Rory as well!) next series. Hopefully they will be leaving closer to the end than the start of the series...

At last the worst companion in Who history (plus Rory) is leaving. Shame they are going to be in any episodes of series seven. Who might be worth watching again once they've gone.

For me, that is the ONLY way to celebrate the 50th anniversary

I have liked them both so I will be sad to see them leave but this was always inevitable really.

So disappointed that they're still going to be in it next year.

I know that set reports will ensure the news leaks months before the episodes air. But still, did we have to be told officially out of the blue like this when we're still months and months away from the series screening and with at least some vague details of what will happen? First decision he's made that I've really disagreed with and it just feels unnecessary.

I'll also freely admit that while it's always interesting to see where Who moves on to I'm going to miss the Ponds terribly. Karen and Arthur have been outstanding in the roles, easily the best companions since the series returned IMO and fabulous actors both. Amy and Rory are also, again IMO, the most realistic characters in many ways that we've seen in new Who and all three just worked brilliantly well with the Doctor. Ah well.... such is life.

Also wonder if either Arthur or Karen (or both) have something big coming up that would have given the game away? Or maybe a new companion is scheduled to shoot in the first block after Christmas and it was better to get this news out there now? Either way it does feel a bit weird somehow, all publicity is good publicity I know but is this really the best run to the Pond-lite Christmas special?”

This sort of news was always bound to leak though, and given the rather haphazard way that Doctor Who news has been leaking recently perhaps they thought it better to just announce it officially this time. At least it will stop various tabloid rags printing headlines such as "Doctor Who in crisis as stars walk out" etc etc

Probably only a casual fan compared to many on this sub-forum but I must confess to being rather sad to hear this news.

But then to be honest, for me personally, it was never the same after they introduced rory. I always felt the doctor and amy worked better with just the two of them.

But hey, another vote here for her leaving topless

I think it's time, they've contributed quite a lot and Karen played a HUGE role in introducing the brand new, revamped series. Rory, Amy and the Doctor work so well together, but now is a good time to say goodbye.

What do you think?

I will be sad to see them go, but don't forget that Karen will reappear as Jean Shrimpton next year and I am sure that they can both go on to great success.

The parting will be 'heartbreaking'. Do I assume that Rory really does die this time, possibly taking Amy with him?

Yeah, I've liked them but they've had a good innings.

Karen has said that once she leaves she doesn't want Amy to return (unlike Rose), so I suspect there will be some sort of definite ending for the characters.

RIP amy.

They have both had a good run, but I always thought they should have a lighter, happier exit than they apparently seem to be getting. But time will tell.

But at the same time, it will be good to see 11 get to grips with somebody new Though it won't be quite the same, considering how 11 and Amy first met.

It doesn't have to be death though (as some have been so certain of)...there are very few companions that have ever returned after leaving, they could just go back to the old ways. Also, it would be a shot in the foot if she wanted her killed off particularly re future audio work etc!

Sad as I to see Amy and Rory go, I think it' a good thing. The show needs to break away from all the arc-heavy storylines from the last two years and do something completely different. With a new companion on board, it will be a clean slate and I can't wait to see Doc 11 with a different companion.

Still as long as she's a she and she's fit, I'm shallow enough to be cool with it. ”

This.

Or some cool action hero type male companion like Captain Jack or Canton would do me.

Rose, Martha and Donna? nah they, thankfully, left ages ago and won't be coming back.

Haters gonna hate. Still, the longer they do hang around the better, if it means people like yourself don't watch the show. And when you don't watch the show it makes it worth the while and can only be a good thing IMO. It means the rest of us can enjoy the show without whiners and moaners. Of course as we all know despite what you say we all know the haters will continue to watch the show and to come onto the forums to find out whats going off.

Lol. You're annoyed at people hating and yet you hate yourself on Rose, Martha and Donna.

I'd love to see Rani as the next compainon(it won't happen) but I want something different, not another "love" story, I liked it better when it was Donna/Doctor - or even someone who just wants to see the world - I'd also love to see the companion from the past(like someone from the 60's or 50's) that could be fun.

Couldn't agree more. Thank God they are off. Never seen the appeal of whiney Amy and drippy Rory.

Hopefully it's not death though, although whatever it is I think it's fairly safe to say now that Rory and Amy won't be in the 50th anniversary, unless Karen changes her mind!

I am sad to see them go, I won't deny that as I love watching them both and they've been great ambassadors for the show. But I'm not surprised, it's been coming since the middle of series 6, and I'm pleasantly surprised that they seem to have a fairly substantial role in series 7 when I assumed it might be one two-parter involving River to tie off their story...

I think I will miss Rory more than Amy he's the more interesting character. Who would I like as a replacement ? Well I suspect it will be a brand new character but I would like to see an old companion return for a few episodes, what about Peri or Martha ?

It's probably the right time for a change of companion - the Ponds have had a good run, but that general storyline is starting to get a bit weary now. I hope they don't bring in another Ace, though *chuckle*

As long as they don't play out the mopey doctor like they did with Ten. Seriously, he was pining for Rose all the way through series 3 and 4.
