I've mixed reactions - Amy and Rory have been wonderful companions, my favourites of New Who by a long, long way, both excellent actors with very believable characters that have been a big part of why Series 5 & 6 have been so good. I will really miss them. But....... it probably is time for new companions and their story arc is over, so it is the right decision for the show. I'm very sad to see them go though

Exactly my thoughts too.

Love both the characters but they have, as they say "served their purpose".

Doctor Who is all about change and getting new Doctors and Companions so it is only natural to the show that this should happen.

I will be sad when it does happen, but also ready to greet whoever it is that replaces them, whether they are an old or new (or both) character.

Donna wasn't so bad actually, the thing is when I go on a "hate" rampage I use logical and rational arguments. The people arguing against say Rory and Amy are the same people who cried a river (pardon the pun) when David Tennant announced he was leaving and that the series was officially dead. Its what folk call trolling. It's just a noise and nothing else.

Me too, and/or Clyde. Problem is if you have Clyde/Rani both on it's just another Rory & Amy. I also like an old companion from the past to come back, even for a few eps maybe even something a bit fresh and have a robot like Kamelion. However it's not going to happen.

I think the next companion as a dead cert, will be:

New
Female
Sexy
Young (early 20's)
Probably a former model
Wears short skirts
Runs a lot
Screams a lot
Gets into trouble a lot
Welsh

They will have served their purpose once the Doctor meets River Song for the last time before she meets her demise in the library. Knowing the ultimate fate of their daughter will be too much for Amy and Rory to conrinue travelling with the Doctor. He has kept many secrets from them, but knowing the details of their daughters death. Possibly a visit to the library by Amy and Rory to meet their digital daughter ?

Perhaps they both die, but the Doctor manages to save their digital souls and uploads them to the Library. Would be a decent ending for all the characters in that storyline.

I like both these theories.

Perhaps end it by having 10 and Donna leave in the Tardis and as it de-materialises shortly after have 11, Rory and Amy materialise in the same spot (yeah yeah a bit like Back to the Future Part 2 at the end). To say a tearful goodbye to River, it gets too much for them and they leave, possibly hurt and angry with the Doctor. He wanted to show them that she is "alive" (in sorts) and well but they resent him for showing them her "death".

You always use "logical and rational arguments", do you? You obviously don't read your own posts.

I like that - it definitely fits the 'heartbreaking' exit Moffat was talking about, without taking the easy route of killing one or both of them. And I think it's quite in character that Amy would want to know what happens to her daughter, and then regret asking when hse finds out!

It's Friday and nearly Christmas, I'll let you have that one whilst I'm feeling quite pleasant today.

Yeah thats kinda how I see it. She'll demand to know what happens and instead of explaining to her what happens he shows her. Then she'll regret it and blame 11. It will be heartbreaking for 11 because he only wanted to help. I can see Rory having a few stern words to the Doc, 11 then turns away and leaves, whispering a tearful sorry under his breath as he closes the Tardis door.

Saying that we could be here all day with creative writing and what-if's. It's a pity none of it ever gets picked up and used.

Have we ever had a Doctor and companion leave on "bad" terms? Adric possibly. The old noodle isn't as good as it used to be.

Haters gonna hate. Still, the longer they do hang around the better, if it means people like yourself don't watch the show. And when you don't watch the show it makes it worth the while and can only be a good thing IMO. It means the rest of us can enjoy the show without whiners and moaners. Of course as we all know despite what you say we all know the haters will continue to watch the show and to come onto the forums to find out whats going off.”

Nope. I love Matt Smith as the Doctor and when the current series gets things right like The Doctor's Wife then it's every bit as good as the modern show has been in the past. However I struggle to enjoy Who when I'm not keen on the companion and for me Amy Pond is the worst companion the show has ever had and I'm just glad I won't have to suffer her any longer. Nothing against Karen who was quite good when I saw her on stage recently.

Couldn't agree more.

What is it with annoying red-haired companions ...?

I was initially hopeful after her debut, but the character quickly became unsympathetic and irritating. So sorry, all you Pond-lovers, but I have to say 'good riddance ...'

I'm devastated. I thought they had already left. Now I have to suffer through half a series of "The Amy Pond Show" before the real Doctor Who can begin.

On a positive note I hope the new companion is an alien, and also hopefully it will go back to the days of the Doctor being more important than the companion, as opposed to recent years where it seemed that Amy Pond was the beginning, the middle and the end of the Whoniverse!!

Sad to see Rory go, delighted to see Amy go, by far the worst companion in New Who, no personality and very unlikeable.

A fair assessment.

I rather like both characters, but am not grieving that they're off. New companions mean new adventures.

I'll be sad to see them go, but I feel that it's about time that they did.
Did it have to be heartbreaking though? They better not kill Rory permanently!

If one of them dies, it better be Amy and not Rory. Her death would be much more suitable. We've seen Amy's reaction to Rory dying too many times, and apart from the one time when she forgot about him, she's been sad, but carried on to help the Doctor. I'd much rather see Rory watch his wife die, and completely lose it, blaming the Doctor and refusing to help him save the world a he doesn't see much point now that his love has gone, so demands the Doctor drops him off as soon as he's saved the world in the episode. It would be a fantastic twist.

Amy Pond is brilliant assistant material. Given her youth, it seemed a bit strange marrying her off but it worked very well imo.
For me though, her time in the show was spoilt by the very existance of River Song, the link to her weird, over complicated and approaching ridiculous. If Amy goes-I hope the River character goes too.

I'm glad they're going - never really liked either of them. Too annoying. Got bored of the whole 'the girl who waited' thing and the guy who waited and died then came back to life then died then came back to life then died etc etc etc.....arrgghh . For the first time since I started watching in 1973 I'm looking forward to them going and a new companion arriving. Can't wait.

I didn't mind them as companions - but got a bit bored with the constantly-dying scenarios
Plus I don't understand why people say they are the 'best companions' of the latest series (5 & 6) - they are the ONLY ones!!
Time for change, and not a moment too soon!
